Short Citrus Crop Expected Next Year Heavy June Drop Caused by Long Spell of Cool Weather The prospect is for a light crop of oranges and lemons in Southern California during the forthcoming season. The set varies widely in various districts, but taken the length and breadth of the citrus belt, the present outlook promises a crop ranging from 65 to 85 per cent of normal. Officials of the California Fruit Growers' Exchange, district managers of the exchange, and representatives of the United States Bureau of Markets say that the setting of citrus fruit is markedly off this summer, but that a fairly accurate estimate of the probably crop cannot be made before September, next, because at an earlier date the fruit is not large enough to permit of a fair estimate. Experts say, that the long spell of cool, cloudy weather early in the spring held back the normal blooming season a matter of four or five weeks, and that hot days in May, while the late bloom was setting, caused a lot of small sets to drop off. "June drop" has manifested itself strongly in some districts, and red spider has hurt the crop in some localities. The navel crop generally made a light set. However, it is expected that the size will run large, because of the small amount of fruit on the tree. The tonnage, it is asserted, might easily be close to normal, because of large sizes, but as a rule large oranges create quite a marketing problem, because medium sizes are more popular. The Valencia setting, which was later than the navel, is spotty. The orange outlook in Tulare county, which has the earliest fruit in the state, is reported to be about the poorest in the entire orange empire. Some official estimates are to the effect that Tulare Trojan vaulter competed while his father was critically ill, and several times Barnes was nearly forced to remain at home from trips because of his father's condition. Both Barnes and his mother have been working to support the family. The Trojan athlete worked out early in the morning, attending classes until noon, and worked all afternoon and evening throughout the year. Four men besides Barnes received merit letters this year. They were Charles Borah, I. C. A. A. A. A. 100 and 220 Champion; Captain Ed House, Herschel Smith and Willie Lewis, who were all members of the world's record-breaking 880-yard relay team, which ran 1 minute 25 4-5 seconds on May 14. Of the seven Southern California track men who counted 19 points in the juniors and 16 tallies in the seniors at the N. A. A. U. championships at Lincoln, Nebr., last week, all will be varsity contestants on the Trojan team in 1928. The Southern California athletes who placed were: Morton Kaer, first in 440-yard hurdles, third in hop-step-and-jump, and fourth in broad jump at juniors; Charles Webber, second in junior high hurdles; Frank Labes, first in junior discus and third in junior shot; Jim Stewart, third in senior decathlon and fourth in junior high jump; Charles Borah, first in 220 and second in 100 at seniors; Lee Barnes, senior pole vault winner, and Jimmie Payne, third in senior low hurdles. Of the entire list, only Barnes and Kaer will be senior next season. Stewart, Labes and Payne were freshmen this year. SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS The petition of David L. Wright, et al., to vacate, discontinue, abandon and abolish the public highway and street known as Juanita street, in the Third road district, was granted. The chairman was authorized to approve the bond on map Tract No. 832. Some official estimates are to the effect that Tulare county's orange crop will probably be about 50 per cent, but others believe the average for the county will run higher than that. South of the Tehachapi the situation as to oranges is quite uniform, in that all districts appear to have good, medium and poor settings, depending upon the grove and its care, for the most part. One rancher will have almost no oranges at all and his neighbor will have almost a normal crop, while another half a mile away will have what appears to be half a crop. Exchange officials are not at all pessimistic over the outlook, and are of the belief that with an 80 per cent crop firmer prices will give the growers, as a group, practically as much money for the crop as they have been accustomed to getting. The Florida situation is reported as being a light crop due to hurricane, freeze and unfavorable weather, so Florida is not expected to take the market away from California, but like California, is likely to enjoy firmer prices for what fruit she has to market. Because of the recent invasion by the Mexican fruit fly, the small amount of citrus fruits grown up Texas may, it is asserted, be tied up by quarantine and held within the borders of the counties where it is grown this year. Southern California Athletic Activities Although Charles Borah, Southern California sprint star, failed by the margin of a judge's vote to complete his first season of collegiate running with an undefeated record, he established himself in 1927 as one of the greatest dash men of all time. Coach Dean Cromwell believes. When five out of nine officials at the recent Amateur Athletic Union meeting in Lincoln, Nebr., voted that Borah's first place 100 yards medal should go to Chester Bowman, who was an Olympic star when Borah was in knee trousers, the Trojan flash's first running season was marred with a defeat. Yet Borah showed that as a sophomore he had run 9.6 seconds with Bowman that day and gave promise of something better before his college days are over. The curley-headed youth then won the 220 with space to spare, according to Cromwell. During the past season Borah has won every race in which he has entered. He copied the 100 and 220 in every Southern California dual meet; ran 9.7 seconds in Seattle; did 9.8 seconds and 9.8 seconds at the Interstate Stewart, Labes and Payne were freshmen this year. SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS The petition of David L. Wright, et al., to vacate, discontinue, abandon and abolish the public highway and street known as Juanita street, in the Third road district, was granted. The chairman was authorized to approve the bond on map tract No. 832, and map tract No. 832 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Lot A not accepted as public highway. The chairman was authorized to approve the bond on map tract No. 847, and map tract No. 847 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Lot X not accepted. It was ordered that state aid be granted to Deena Weddell. Spraying licenses were ordered issued to Reif & Brock, Orange County Fumigating Company, E. E. Bruns, and W. C. Michaell; fumigating licenses were ordered issued to George H. Arends, R. E. Beardsley, Placentia Orange Grower's Association, Hersey Fumigating Company, Reif & Brock, and Orange County Fumigating Company, Inc. The chairman was authorized to approve the bond on map tract No. 855, and map tract No. 855 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Lots A, B, C, and D not accepted as public highways. The chairman was authorized to approve the bond on map tract No. 856, and map tract No. 856 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Lots A, B, C, and D not accepted as public highways. Supervisor George Jeffrey was granted a leave of absence from the state for four days, commencing July 7, 1927. A resolution was regularly adopted in the matter of county improvement No. 3; providing for the issuance of street improvement bonds, prescribing the denomination of such bonds and of the interest coupons attached thereto. It was recommended that the salary for Traffic Officer Frank Vaughn be fixed at $175 per month, commencing July 1, 1927. It was ordered that the audit report of the road department made by Lybrand, Ross Brothers & Montgomery be received and filled. The county auditor was ordered to draw a warrant on the Advertising fund for $1000, in favor of George Raymer, secretary of Chamber of Commerce, to be used at the Santa Ana air meet, to advertise Orange county. A resolution was regularly adopted fixing July 12, 1927, at 11 a.m., as time when the board of supervisors will sell at public auction certain property situated in Orange county. F. E. Anderson, H. E. Dungan, M. L. Oramer, E. J. Tobias and Walter Wentz were appointed as members of the Garden Grove county fire protection district. M. CORY, Asst. Farm Advisor The Orange County Cowtesting Association reports 657 cows tested for butterfat in the month of June. The average for the association was 959 pounds of milk and 35.1 pounds of butterfat. This is an average decrease of 12 pounds of milk on that last month and exactly the same average butterfat production of last month. On checking back over the records of different herds and totaling the average production of the entire herd for the last 10 months, those herds testing continuously for the last three years have an average of from 40 to 93 pounds more butterfat than those herds testing this year for the first time. The high herd average of 30 cows and under goes to Stimpson Brothers, with an average of 1234 pounds milk and 43 pounds butterfat. Second place is awarded W. L. Walton, with an average of 965.9 pounds milk and 37.1 pounds butterfat. High herd average over 30 cows is awarded to C. J. Segerstrom & Sons, with a herd average of 1254 pounds milk and 42.3 pounds butterfat. Second placing was won by O. Folkerets with 1120 pounds milk and 41.6 pounds butterfat. The herd with the high five cows is also won by C. J. Segerstrom, with a total of 350.7 pounds butterfat. Second placing is the O. Folkerets herd with 319.7 pounds butterfat total for the high five. High individual cow was one owned by E. A. Wakeham, with 83.4 pounds butterfat, and second was owned by C. J. Segerstrom, with 83.0 pounds butterfat. A trip to Japan at the close of the 1928 collegiate season is being planned for the University of Southern California baseball team. The Trojan diamond squad will play a series of 20 games under the auspices of the University of Waseda, Tokyo, according to plans which are now incomplete. Because of "unusual accomplishments under trying condition," Lee Barnes, captain-elect of the 1928 Southern California track team, has been granted a merit letter in track by the general athletic committee of Southern California. This award usually goes to I. C. A. A. A. A. winners or world record breakers. Barnes was beaten at the intercollegiates by Sabin Carr of Yale, although he went 13 feet 9½ inches. Barnes was consistent over 13 feet 6 inches and twice exceeded 13 feet 9 inches. Pepper Weevil Found In Orange County By RAYMOND ELLIS, Assistant Farm Advisor During the past week the entomologists at the co-operative pepper weevil laboratory at Garden Grove have been particularly busy making field inspections in response to requests from growers. There have been any number of different insects brought to the entomologists, but not until last Wednesday was a weevil found. However, with the finding of the first one, several other infestations followed in quick succession. The entomologists found their first weevil in a field near Paularino, and then two days later found adult weevil, larvae and punctured buds in considerable number in a field between Anaheim and Garden Grove. Undoubtedly, numerous other infestations will be found during the next few days. The pepper weevil laboratory is operated on a co-operative basis, the agencies involved being Orange county, University of California, and the United States department of agriculture. The county is represented by "inspectors from the horticultural commissioner's office, who are ready to make field inspections on request, while the other two agencies are furnishing entomologists who are experimenting on control methods." Growers of peppers should watch their fields closely, now so that the infestations can be held as low as pos- Gas Refrigerator Newest Invention Use Fire to Generate a Frigid Atmosphere in the Box The latest contribution of science to the pleasure and leisure of housekeeping has been made by the gas industry in the form of a gas-fired absorption type refrigerator. This remarkable paradox, turning heat into cold by gas, is made possible by the new Servel gas refrigerator, now on display at the Anaheim office of the Southern Counties Gas Company, according to district manager, C. E. Rutledge. "The gas refrigerator," explained Mr. Rutledge, "has been in process of continuous and extended development for several years. The principles involved are quite ingenious. There has been no approach to them in all refrigeration history." "This new type of refrigerator, operating silently and at the cost of but a few cents per day, by a small gas flame, can truly be described as revolutionary," continued the local gas company executive. "It maintains constant refrigeration without dependence upon any mechanical agent." The new gas refrigerator which we are now ready to sell in the district differs from all previous known types in that it dispenses with all moving parts, including motor, compressor, pump, fans, floats or valves. Each part of the machine is fixed and rigid, there being nothing to get out of order. Furthermore, and most important, it is absolutely silent in operation. Ammonia, hydrogen and distilled water are employed as the fluids of refrigeration, according to District Manager Rutledge. The great advantage in the use of substances of this group is that deterioration is impossible and, therefore, there is no limit to the life of the apparatus. The machine works on the principle of "refrigeration by absorption." This means that the refrigerating agent is carried through a part of the cycle by an absorption liquid. Ammonia, for instance, absorbed by water, is suitable as such an agent. The cycle of operation involves the release of the ammonia from the water by means of heat, after which the ammonia gas is liquified by cooling it in a condenser. It is then made to evaporate at a low temperature and pressure in the evaporator, whereby heat is absorbed from the surroundings. This is the real cause of the production of cold. The gaseous ammonia is again absorbed by the water from which it was exuded: enviable record made during more than a century of service to mankind," concluded District Manager C. E. Rutledge. LEADER IN PEST CONTROL Dr. Coppel Rivas, inspector-general of plant quarantine and fumigation of the Mexican department of agriculture, is now in California, completing a study of the methods used in this state in its never-ceasing battle against the inroads of the pests of orchard and field. In an interview granted in Los Angeles a day or so ago, he paid due words of praise to our department of agriculture for the efficient manner in which it has directed its work. "California," he said, "leads the world in pest-control methods for agricultural protection." That he is fully convinced of it is borne out by the fact that Mexico in developing, under his direction, its work along the same lines has chosen California as a model. Mexico, according to Dr. Rivas, is making rapid strides in quarantine matters. Last year at Guadalajara there was established one of the largest vacuum fumigation plants in the world in order to protect the West Coast from infestations from other sections of the country.
