Survey Being Made Of Fishing Industry
Some Varieties Gradually Becoming Extinct, It Is Shown
Accurate statistical data on one of the great industries of California, the commercial fisheries, has been gathered for a number of years, and valuable information is becoming available through a study of this data at the laboratories maintained by the California Fish and Game Commission.
The force of laboratory men has been carefully analyzing boat catches over a period of years, and when this work is completed for the time selected, the commission will have accurate data which will determine the condition of the fishing grounds and the kinds of fish that are being depleted and those that are increasing.
This work is of the utmost importance, as three varieties of fish have been practically eliminated as far as commercial fishing is concerned, due to the fact that there were no figures available regarding the depletion of various grounds and varieties.
Sturgeon, salmon and California halibut have, in years gone by, been very plentiful in California waters, but these are now near commercial extinction.
If the survey which is at present being made shows other varieties of fish are becoming scarce, steps can be taken to protect these fish until such time as the shortage does not exist.
The data is secured by analyzing boat catches using the same fisherman, who has used the same boat and gear and fished in the same section over a period of years. The commission requires that a receipt be issued for fish when they are turned over to the market, and this receipt, a copy of which comes to the commission, shows the boatman's name, name of boat, weight and variety of fish brought in. These slips are carefully recorded and comparison made for the same days over the period of time. These figures show whether or not the supply is being depleted or increasing. This method really shows what is happening to the fish resources, N. B. Beco-

B. Scofield, head of the commercial fisheries department of the Fish and Game Commission, explains.
Too much attention is paid to figures of total catches for a period which oftentimes mean little, as many things enter into the total catch of any particular variety of fish, and it is only through a careful comparative analysis wherein the fisherman, boat and days and grounds fished are considered, that definite facts may be secured, he insists.
The method now being used is one of two that get the facts. The other is a careful check on the size of fish being taken from a certain fishing section. It is established, according to Mr. Scofield, that where fish are becoming smaller, the variety is diminishing, and tests are made taking samples over a period of time, from the same boats, using the same gear.
When this data is compiled, the department of commercial fisheries will have accurate information which will be invaluable to all those interested in this great Industry.
Canneries, fish dealers, fishermen and the many others vitally interested in this business are waiting for the results of the investigation, as it is of the utmost importance to know the population of the fishing grounds as accurately as possible, in order that the commercial fishing industry may be carried on efficiently and with the most return for the great amount of capital invested.

This amount added to the $300,000 the Anaheim Orange and Lemon Association expects to pay for first pool fruit and the $400,000 the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Association expects to pay will bring the total value of the early Valencia crop in the Anaheim district up to approximately $1,-200,000 with three other local distributing agencies yet to be heard from.
These three houses have reported the payment to growers of amounts aggregating approximately $468,000 as part settlement on first pool fruit. The Anaheim Orange and Lemon Association some weeks ago reported that approximately $150,000 had already been paid growers interested in the first pool fruit period and the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Association reported that it has advanced its growers approximately $118,-000.
The first pool period at the Anaheim Co-operative house closed late in June and second pool on which the house is now working, is expected to be rounded out about August 15.
Prices are showing a consistent improvement on the eastern market and a good marketing record is looked for in the handling of the second pool of fruit. Manager Ritchie said. Fruit sizes however are still showing a preponderance of the smaller grades although the quality is generally excellent.

"The attitude of the French people has changed materially since last year. Deep down there is a basis of kindly feeling which needs only an opportunity to be brought to the surface. I have had ample opportunity to observe the growth of enthusiasm of the French for the return visit of the American soldiers."
General Pershing has just recently returned from abroad.
The California reservations for the tour abroad of the Legionnaires will close on July 15, according to George J. Hatfield, United States attorney and chairman of the On to Paris committee for this state. More than eight hundred reservations have been made.
Hanford MacNider, assistant secretary of war and a former national commander of the American Legion, is expected to pay an official call upon California posts before the end of the summer, according to word from the national capital. MacNider is due in the west on an inspection tour of military posts, and will be invited to accept the hospitality of the American Legion groups while in this state.
Three California cities have already entered the fight to secure the 1928 state convention of the American Legion, according to State Adjutant James K. Fisk.
Santa Rosa, Marysville and Stockton are the cities which will ask the coming Santa Barbara conclave of the World war veterans to grant them the next annual Legion convention. Plans are under way in each of the cities for a vigorous campaign between now and August 2, when the Santa Barbara convention opens in the endeavor to line up the delegates.
According to Adjutant Fisk, final preparations for the Santa Barbara convention are practically completed. The convention will be in session three days. Extensive plans of entertain-

It is said that the average weight of the flapper's summer attire has been reduced to twelve ounces. Well, that is one way to reduce.
It is said that college students are not drinking as much as formerly. And it might be added that what they drink isn't as good as it used to be.
Management have been made by the committee in charge of the convention, including the world premiere of a new war film, "Buck Privates," for which a prologue is being prepared by Hollywood post of the Legion.
The American Legion in California will continue to carry on its war on the "reds" in this state, declares Dr. John F. Slavich, state commander of the organization, in a letter to the various posts of the Legion.
"The greatest weapon with which to successfully combat communism, and its kindred diseases, is education." Commander Slavich declares in calling attention to the national program of his organization. "The 'red' movement must be met and overcome, but that cannot be done by 'viewing with alarm,' 'red-baiting,' riding professional martyrs on a rail, and vain-glorious 'flag-waving.' Irascible and unreasonable tactics lead to a violence that sinks to the very level of the evil to be wiped out. When an emergency calls for militant action in dealing with the 'reds,' the function properly belongs to the constituted authority, which can always draw on the loyal citizenship of the country to carry out its mandate."
Commander Slavich has requested that each post of the Legion devote a considerable part of its time to the department's Americanism program.

"This amendment has been made for two reasons. First, since an operator's license, as heretofore issued, has been good until revoked or suspended and since the operator's address appears on the license and is the only record of addresses of operators which the division has, these addresses are inaccurate because no provision has been made for advising of change of address. Therefore, it was thought advisable to authorize the division to call in all licenses issued three years ago or more and eliminate from the files the names and addresses of a large number of persons who have left the state or who have cited.
In the renewal of such licenses, when called in by the division, the division may or may not require an examination of the issuance a beneficial record of years to be incurous consequences driving thorized to such application license.

New Vehicle Act Causes Confusion
Much confusion prevails among motorists over the amendment to the California Vehicle Act that goes into effect July 29, relating to operator's licenses. One of the reports in connection with the new law is that every motorist who has carried a license for more than three years must be examined for license renewals. This is in error and to clarify the situation the following statement relative to operator's licenses is issued.
"Section 69, as amended, provides that the Division of Motor Vehicles may at any time cancel all operator's licenses which has been outstanding for three years or more, and to require the re-

Foreign sales of Exchange fruit for 1926 were over three times as great as in any previous year. The United Kingdom, Europe, the Orient, the Hawaiian and Philippine Islands, New Zealand and Australia are being developed for larger shipments each succeeding year.
The products plants of the Exchange absorb thousands of carloads of oranges and lemons annually. Here lemons are converted into citric acid, lemon oil and citrus pectin, and oranges are made into orange oil and concentrate. Thus Sunkist growers dispose of all their fruit.
This constant expansion of old and new consumer and dealer outlets is only one of the many services rendered by the California Fruit Growers Exchange.
Yet the total cost of all Exchange services is less than the sales expense alone of any other citrus marketing organization. For every dollar of sales only two or three cents are required to cover the entire cost of Exchange service (2.48 cents last year).
