ON WOMEN (As Aristotle Might Have Written) In three categories may women be thought of: Women as sex, women in general, and women in particular. Of women as a sex—as opposed to men—little can be said except that they are opposed to men, either by inclination, by fashion, or by simulation. Hence we have the institution of marriage. Of women in general still less can be said, except that they are generally speaking. Of women in particular least can be said, except by women in general and men who are not particular. IN FINE, of women, nothing can be said, except what has been left unsaid by me nin general, men in particular, and men who understand them. And the last declined as civilization advanced. Immediate steps were taken to prevent damage to the building. The corner was braced up and workmen were engaged to place a solid foundation beneath the corner. The Hahn livery stable and a residence formerly stood upon the ground now occupied by the hotel, and it is supposed the cesspool had been dug for the accommodation of the family living in the house before the sewer system was established. The new building has suffered no damage from the mishap. Garden Grove Man Fleeced of $1200 Two men, posing as eye doctors, fleeced Alexander P. Stephens, farmer of Garden Grove, out of $1200, according to a report Stephens made to the Los Angeles police Saturday. The identity of the two men has not been learned by officers, according to a report received from Los Angeles today. Stephens, in a visit to Los Angeles, met the two men on the street and was engaged in conversation with them. They told him they were eye doctors from Denver. Stephens' wife had been suffering from eye affliction. The report to the Los Angeles police intimated that Stephens then took the two men to his home, where his wife's eyes were examined. They informed him that they would operate for $1200. Stephens paid the money in cash and the two men departed. They have not been heard from since that time, Stephens reported. EFFICIENT RADICALISM This is the day of efficiency in propaganda as well as in business. And it is a noteworthy fact that the one-time illogical, impractical socialist who dreamed of Utopia has been displaced by the radical who often shows a political effectiveness far more deadly than Employees of County Banks to Banquet A banquet will be given this evening, at 6:30 o'clock, at Odd Fellows hall, Orange, by the Orange county chapter of the American Institute of Banking. Those attending will include all employees of banks in Orange county. Approximately seventy-five are expected to attend, it was stated. Roy Edwards, as chairman of the entertainment, stated an excellent program will be provided. Mrs. Walter Kogler will sing and Mrs. W. A. Martin will give violin solos. The speakers of the evening will be Henry S. Schaefer Jr., a prominent attorney of Los Angeles, and William T. Boyce, dean of Fullerton Junior College. Dancing will be the diversion after the program. SCHUMACHER ENDORSED At a meeting of the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce, held Tuesday evening, at its headquarters in the G. S. T. building, that body commended Supervisor William Schumacher for the stand taken on the just distribution of the gasoline and tax funds for county road purposes. The following resolution was adopted: "Whereas, we believe that the action of the Board of Supervisors of Orange County, in refusing to allocate certain money to the City of Santa Ana from the State Gasoline Tax Fund, for road purposes, to be just and equitable, and fair to all sections of the County; Therefore, be it resolved, that the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce, in regular session, shall endorses the action of the Board of Supervisors at the meeting held March 8th, 1927. This resolution be malled to the newspapers, and a copy each to Chairman William Schumacher and John C. Mitchell. "FREDERICK BASTADY," "Secretary." INCREASING STANDARD Some interesting figures on the purchasing power of the dollar of today were given out recently by the national industrial conference board. The figures show, among other things, that the present value of the dollar in purchasing power is 60 cents, when compared with those two duets on the Hawaiian SENATORIAL CAMPAIGN The campaign for the Republican nomination for United States senator in 1928 may be a three-cornered fight with these candidates in the field: Senator Hiram W. Johnson, Lieutenant-Governor Buron Fitts, and William Kent, former member of congress. If that should be the line-up, the candidacy of Kent may be intended simply to drag votes from Johnson in the north and thus strengthen the chances of Buron Fitts, who is regarded as one of the greatest vote getters the state has ever seen. Kent is bitterly hostile to Johnson and might, so it is rumored, be willing to act as a sort of "stalking horse" for Fitts. The above bit of political gossip was picked up by the editor of the Riverside Press on the occasion of a recent visit to Sacrament, and his informant is one of the shrewdest political observers in the state. The writer asked him why he was writing Friend Richardson, Judge Rex Goodcell or Major W. F. Lineberger off the map in this connection; and his reply was that the showing made by these three gentlemen in the election of 1926 was not such as to make them available in 1928. Asked about Congressman Phil D. Swing, the gentleman said he was confident that Swing would not run against Johnson. That view coincides with the information which the editor of the Press has been able to secure from other sources. If, however, Johnson should not be a candidate, then Swing would most likely have to be reckoned with. Whether he would be a candidate against his "buddy" Fitts is a problem. Sacramento is busy now discussing the problems of legislation and sizing up the appointments of Governor Young; but the political wiseacres are never too busy to indulge in a little timely conversation about the next campaign, and some of them are picking Buron Fitts as our next senator:—Riverside Press. The Anaheim Conservatory of Music presented last night a delightful musical play, "Mother's Birthday," which Mrs. Siegel had written and staged in the California theater. The young performers acted their parts very nicely and played the musical selections in perfect time and tune. A special feature were two duets on the Hawaiian EFFICIENT RADICALISM This is the day of efficiency in propaganda as well as in business. And it is a noteworthy fact that the one-time illogical, impractical socialist who dreamed of Utopia has been displaced by the radical who often shows a political effectiveness far more deadly than that of his conservative adversary. This is one menace of communism which is often overlooked by the average observer. Attention to this fact was recently called by O. L. Smith, former attorney general of Michigan, who prosecuted the famous case against Charles E. Ruthenberg and other radicals a few years ago. In addressing a recent meeting of a branch of the National Metal Trades Association at Cincinnati, Mr. Smith said: "Communism and socialism have reached into a stratum of society where the bleary-eyed idle dreamer is not to be found. In his place is a clear-minded, calculating individual, many trained and educated in our best universities, who have taken this insidious movement to heart and are propagating its growth. "Every communist is a pacifist because he hopes that through his pernicious propaganda he can get others to join him to bring about a condition for the outlawing of policing organizations. By this condition the communists then hope to take command by bringing about a state of rebellion and establishing their own form of government." Here are some thoughts worth considering. The Red of today even in America is no longer a Utopian dreamer. He has a keen political sense, is well financed and knows the value of organization and publicity. He uses the printing press and the political machine instead of the soap box and finds his modern methods a thousands times more effective. With Babe Ruth getting $210,000 for three years' play, the average youth will be easy to convince that there is more in training for baseball than for a college professorship. INCREASING STANDARD Some interesting figures on the purchasing power of the dollar of today were given out recently by the national industrial conference board. The figures show, among other things, that the present value of the dollar in purchasing power is 60 cents, when compared with the dollar of 1914. During the past five years the purchasing power has varied little more than five cents, fluctuating back and forth within that margin of difference so that it can be safely said that the dollar has been practically stabilized on this 60-cent basis when compared with 1914. Average living costs as computed by the board were 1.8 per cent lower in 1926 than in 1925, but were 66 per cent higher than in 1914. But it is significant that the average weekly wage earnings at the beginning of the year were 116 per cent higher. $160 Buys fine tone mahogany Geo P. Bent piano.
