WHAT'S WHAT In Anaheim Shops Acid-Proof Sinks At Quast's Shop Have you an acid-proof sink in your kitchen? One that will not stain when you peel oranges or lemons in it, or prepare vegetables for dinner? Joe Quast, the plumber, carries just such a sink, the enamel of which is guaranteed against stain of any kind. That is the comfort of installing only guaranteed plumbing in the home. There is no grief after a few years, but as long as the sink, or bathroom stands, one is free from extra cleaning work and repairs. Many people do not realize that there are all grades of enamel, and while the inexpensive one may look tempting, be sure that you know what you are getting before having it installed. This, one can do only by going to a plumber who has the reputation for being dependable, who will explain the different grades and can be depended upon to put in pipes that will carry off waste—fixtures that will be nickle if sold for nickle, and not tarnish with wear. Such a plumber is Joe Quast, whom I have found has that enviable reputation in the Anaheim homes he has installed with highest grade sanitary plumbing. Are you helping them to withstand the influences which are taking them out of the home rather than keeping them in it? Music in the home life is essential to the upbuilding of character, to an appreciation of the worth-while things of life. It gives an outlet for the emotions along natural channels. Music is self-expression of the normal kind. The late murder trial of Leopold Loeb showed the lack of normal emotion. No one need hesitate on a musical education for their children when Danz makes the purchase of a piano within the reach of every home. They are in position to guide you in the choice of the best for your needs. Talk over your music needs with Danz, for this house is dependable—an old-fashioned name in the world of music in Southern California. F. Herzog, a Glendale business man, and two youthful assistants, whom he had engaged to cash the checks. When the youthful confederates were bagged by the Santa Ana police, Herzog's hat led to his undoing. He was back giving his business in Glendale a "once-over" when the police closed in on him. Herzog frankly told his story in a written confession to Chief of Police John S. Martin of Anaheim, where he had operated, as well as elsewhere in Orange county. Friday, Herzog pleaded guilty to the check charge in Superior Judge Homer Ames' court, while his two aides, John F. Beebe and Fred Bailey, were admitting their guilt to Superior Judge James L. Allen. The trio applied for probation and will be given hearings March 18. Following his arrest, Herzog, in writing, described his brief but active career in checks. He had faced failure and in his need turned to a friend, Saville McGinty, for advice, he said. "There's money in hi-jacking or counterfeiting," suggested McGinty. "Or you might float some checks." Herzog decided it would be checks. He got a Mexican printer in Los Angeles to print some checks, copying a form of cashier's check used by a certain prominent Los Angeles bank. But there was one notable difference, which made the case one of not only fictitious checks but a fictitious bank as well. Instead of Security Trust and Savings," the checks read "Security Savings and Trust." The name of the cashier, J. S. Sims, was closely copied in forgeries, which read "J. C. Sims." An ample supply of the checks, representing enough thousands of dollars to place Herzog beyond worry over business in Glendale, or anywhere else, was neatly turned out by the Mexican printer. Then Herzog connected with Bailey and Beebe and arranged for them to pass his checks. They divided the proceeds with him. All went well for a time. They worked Los Angeles, Burbank. Arizona Attractive to Winter Tourists The Grand Canyon is considered one of the modern wonders of the world, and its great depths and widths and heights, with the delicate colorings of Mother Nature, render it well worthy of its reputation, yet the Grand Canyon is far from being the sole attraction of Arizona. One can travel for weeks through this neighbor state of our visiting points of scenic interest almost equal to the canyon itself. Best of all, most of Arizona is open to travel throughout the winter season when the canyon is snowed in. In fact, most of the southern half of the state should only be visited in winter because of the heat. The missions of "our own California are known the world over," yet in Southern Arizona are two missions founded more than a hundred years before Junipero Serra founded mission San Diego, mission St. Xavier, 22 miles west of Tucson, is in fine repair and is a beautiful building. It is in use and regular services are held. The Tumacacori mission ruins are located on the Nogales-Tucson highway, about 19 miles north of the Mexican border. Another feature of Arizona not generally known is its huge forested areas. Navajo county alone contains the largest solid forestry area in the United States, while little Santa Cruz county, down on the Mexican border, has large areas of heavy pine forests besides its oak and Juniper. The great Roosevelt dam, on the Salt River, is well worth a visit and the motorist who travels on past the dam over the summit into Globe and the mining districts is well repaired by the colorful gorges, the views across tremendous distances, and the odd rock formations along the way. Just off the highway and within sight are some of the old cliff dwellings, although not so extensive as farther north. Scores of varieties of cacti may be found along the highway, especially in the west and southwest. In the eastern and southwestern portions of the state mining is the principal industry, although stock raising runs it a close second in importance. In the valleys of the Gila an dte Salt river, agriculture is of major importance, the silt of granite and lava erosion having formed a soil that needs only irrigation to grow most anything. Grapefruit and Confiscate For It Airplane Used to Smuggle Chinks Officers Get Three Men for Bringing in Chinamen Three men, one of whom is alleged to have been the pilot of the airplane suspected of smuggling three Chinese into the United States at Yorba Linda last Friday, were arrested by United States immigration officers Sunday, when the pilot returned to the plane. The pilot gave his name as Jack O'Brien, and is said to have been identified as the man who walked into Yorba Linda after landing his plane in a field four miles away. Yorba Linda residents were surprised last Friday, to see a plane circle over their town and then land in a field nearby. Suspicious, several investigated and reported that three Chinese were taken from the plane and hidden in the brush. The pilot walked into town and telephoned to Los Angeles, it is said. A short time later two automobiles arrived from Los Angeles and took the Chinese and the pilot away. Report of the incident first was filed with Ed McClellan, chief criminal deputy sheriff, who made an investigation. McClellan reported to immigration officials and a guard was placed over the airplane. Saturday, three men approached the plane in an automobile. They were told by a small boy, it was said, that officers were in hiding near the plane so they turned their machine around and disappeared. Sunday they returned. Officers hid in the plane itself, allowed the men to approach the airplane and then hopping out with drawn revolvers, forced them to surrender. The Yorba Linda case is similar to that reported Friday at Murrieta Hot Springs, where a plane is reported to have made a forced landing. Four Chinese were in the plane. Riverside sheriff's officers are reported to have arrested the Chinese and the plane's mechanic. They are being held by immigration officials. Then Herzog connected with Bailey and Beebe and arranged for them to pass his checks. They divided the proceeds with him. All went well for a time. They worked Los Angeles, Burbank, Hollywood and Long Beach. Then they came into Orange county and disaster. Santa Ana, Anaheim and Fullerton were visited with success until the blow fell. Herzog had left Beebe and Bailey in Santa Ana while he returned to Glendale. Something went wrong. The police swooped down upon the youths. In their car were found a sheaf of unchased checks—and Herzog's hat. Then came Herzog's arrest as an inevitable circumstance. Herzog was philosophical about it. He confessed. So did his confederates. Each was prosecuted in connection with a $20 check, passed in Anaheim. Herzog passed one to Jack Corn. So did Beebe. Bailey's check was passed to the J. C. Penny Company. The Value of Wind Deflectors Why the agony of open car driving with hair flying, wraps blowing, and hats dashing away, when all this can be overcome by the now popular open car wind deflector? There is no exhilaration that equals the thrill of open car driving when it can be experienced in comfort behind the Eas-ajust wind deflector. The brackets used on these reflectors are the results of many months experimenting with the problem of providing perfect protection from the rush of wind and yet afford quick and easy adjustment to all positions, and they are made to fit all types and sizes of windshield posts. Many people have the idea that with a closed automobile that their troubles are over as far as wind is concerned. But like the millions of open car defectors that have been sold because of their absolute necessity, so will millions of pairs of closed car defectors be sold for the reason that one can drive with their front windows down, and thereby enjoy controlled fresh air currents. Without them there is a noticeable draft that makes driving unsafe, where with them you also eliminate the annoying rush-of wind, dust and nashes, as well as allowing full freedom of arm movement and a clear vision. West Brothers, located in the New Pickwick building, Los Angeles at Chestnut streets, are carrying a complete line of these defectors in all sizes and shapes and can furnish them in either plain or engraved grade A beveled plate glass. And their prices are amazing. If you haven't a pair on your car, stop in and see for yourself formations along the way. In the valleys of the Gila an dthe Salt river, agriculture is of major importance; the silt of granite and lava erosion having formed a soil that needs only irrigation to grow most anything. Grapefruit and melons are especially fine in the vicinity of Phoenix, the capital. The Tucson district is the richest copper mining country in the world. In the Casa Grande valley, not far from Florence and between Tucson and Phoenix, are the ruins of Casa Grande, said to be one of the oldest ruins in the United States. Coronado is believed to have visited these ruins when he crossed Arizona in 1540. Evidences of ancient irrigation canals and the cultivation of the soil are everywhere in evidence, indicating a high state of civilization perhaps many thousands of years ago. In the more northern counties of Arizona, where elevations of more than a mile are common, snow is not an infrequent visitor in mid-winter. However, Phoenix, Flagstaff and other points from which side trips may be made to points of interest like the new Weatherford toll road up San Francisco peaks, the petrified forests, or the famous cliff dwellings, are open the greater part of the year and, with the highways improved as they are now, travel almost any time is comfortable and speedy. COMPULSORY INSURANCE That the Massachusetts plan of compulsory liability insurance for automobile owners will not be adopted in California without a fight being made against it is indicated in announcements being sent out by the Automobile Club of Southern California. The club, it is evident in statements issued, can see little good in the plan. The law went into effect in Massachusetts the first of the year. How it will work out is said yet to be a matter of doubt. There was a great outcry against the system, but those who favored it said that after it had been in use over a period of years its worth would be recognized generally. Compulsory insurance, it was declared, would prove of benefit both to drivers and pedestrians, and would, in the long run, be an efficient and economical form of protection. However, there are serious objections to compulsory insurance, the club's statement asserts. The proposal is meeting with organized resistance in many parts of the country, the club announces. Recent public announcement of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce that any action toward compulsory insurance is decided premature at this time is said to be finding echo in many states. Such legislation is being considered by not less than enjoy controlled fresh air currents. Mrs. Arthur Lewis was awarded the guest prize. When drop cakes spread out too much in baking the trouble is sometimes that the oven is not hot enough, rather than that the mixture is too soft. However, there are serious objections to compulsory insurance, the club's statement asserts. The proposal is meeting with organized resistance in many parts of the country, the club announces. Recent public announcement of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce that any action toward compulsory insurance is decidedly premature at this time is said to be finding echo in many states. Such legislation is being considered by not less than twenty-one of the forty-eight states in the Union and gradually these states are acting adversely on such proposed action. Common sense and appreciation of practical business methods form the basis for rejection for compulsory liability insurance in Ohio, according to H. H. Rice, chairman of the legislative committee of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, in a statement to the automobile industry. "While we believe that many who are fostering compulsory insurance are sincere," he declared, "when one analyzes the problem, its difficulties immediately become apparent. Insuring a driver against financial penalty is likely in many cases to increase his carelessness in operating a machine, and accordingly have just the opposite effect from the protection which such measures aim to give. "The large amount of notice which the compulsory idea has attracted this year is already arousing the public to a declaration of sentiment against the proposal. Compulsory insurance is typical of that unpractical attitude of mind which thinks that anything can be remedied by a law. It is gratifying to see that the Ohio lawmakers themselves have a practical understanding of the problem. It is expected that other legislatures will postpone action on this matter, as very little data is available at present." Confiscate Seine For Law Violation Deep Sea Fisherman Loses His Outfit for Disobedience Superior Judge Fred A. Treat of Monterey county recently wrote a closing chapter in one of the most interesting cases in the history of wild life conservation in California, when he declared the large purse seine owned by Andrew Zambarlin, deep sea fisherman, forfeit as a nuisance, and ordered the California Fish and Game Commission to confiscate the net and sell same. The net is valued at $4000, and the money realized by the commission from its sale will be turned into the fish and game preservation funds. Zarbairlin was one of the purse seine operators employed by Ocean Industries, Inc., a Nevada corporation, which undertook, early last winter, to operate a fish reduction plant, in violation of law, aboard the old concrete ship. Peralta. This plant was located in Monterey bay, near the city of Santa Cruz. The question of the exact location of the "three-mile limit" line came up in justice, superior, federal and supreme courts, with the result that all of the courts have held that all of Monterey bay lies within the boundaries of the state, and is subject to fish and game laws. Zambarlin and John Zuanich were engaged in fishing for the Peralta's owners when B. D. Marx Greene, executive officer and attorney for the commission, put a stop to its operations by invoking injunction proceedings against the floating reduction plant and seizing the nets. Conservation officials look upon Judge Treat's decision as a distinct victory and deterrant to others who might be induced to engage in questionable operations looking toward the violation or evasion of California fish and game laws. Owners of the Peralta denied any effort to violate the law, but admitted their wish to "evade" the provisions of acts preventing unrestricted reduction of food fish into fertilizers and oil. Why?
