WHAT'S WHAT In Anaheim Shops Keep Youngsters Home With Music Those youngsters of yours—will they seek amusement elsewhere as they grow older, or will they find it in the home? Good music moulds the morals of both boys and girls. Give them a piano and they will thank you always. It will not only make them popular at home, but at college, and give them the better contacts. Your youngsters can quickly learn to play the plano, for Danz promises to give MUSIC LESSONS FREE with every piano sold, and you can get any standard make plano for as low as $10 down, with the balance like rent. Danz is an old-fashioned name in the music world, one that can be trusted for quality and service. His low prices and easy terms have helped hundreds of buyers. 162 W. Center. Clotheslines The skirt and separate blouse are back again. The silhouette is straight, with supple fullness in pleats. Harmony in coloring is the outstanding feature for Spring. A slight drapery drawn upward in front is the new mode. The jacket's the thing—whether with a frock, suit or ensemble. Watch the accessories if you would be well dressed. Compose colors—two or more tones of the same color, skilfully blended shades of several colors—lead out in frocks, ensembles and even hats. What fur? Oh, fox fur, of course, for whether it's a silver fox, red fox, or one of the dyed fox skins in belge, gray or taupe. Miladi must have a separate fox neckpiece for Spring. Evening Gowns at The Paris Cleaners Spencer's Store And Wall Paper We noticed some very beautiful wall paper in Spencer's window this week. They told me it had just arrived. I don't know so much about wall paper, but I am sure one could find almost anything they desired at this store. You know Mr. Spencer has made a lifelong study of wall paper, and can tell you so many interesting things about its manufacture—the different countries in which it is made and the great possibilities of wall paper decoration. I think it is so much nicer to trade where people really understand, don't you? Guard Against Plumbing Ills To exercise as great care in your choice of a plumber is as essential as the choice of a dentist or doctor, for good plumbing is essential to the health of your family. Drain pipes must be installed so that they actually carry off waste. Bathroom fixtures should be of the type that are easily kept clean, and acid-proof sinks make work doubly easy. A firm that creates confidence is Joe Quast's. The plumbing in many of Anaheim's best homes stands as evidence that he is dependable. His work brings lasting satisfaction. Whether you are remodeling, building a new home, or in need of plumbing, you will find they guarantee all work at Quast's. 246 E. Center. Phone 132. All work is guaranteed as to quality, for this shop sends all work to the $75,000 Hollywood plant, at Hollywood, which cleans many a movie wardrobe. They also guarantee date of delivery, and if you are planning on your frock for such a party, you will not be disappointed. This is a good place to send hubby's and the youngsters' wardrobe to be renovated, or hats blocked and cleaned. 125 N. Los Angeles street. Phone 508. THE VINCENT Union Pacific Opens New Offices in L. A. Finest Railway Ticket Office in United States, Is Claim Augmenting the luxurious modern service already available on their crack fixtures, and designed to provide ample accommodation for the rapidly increasing travel needs of Southern California for some years to come, the new Los Angeles passenger office of the Union Pacific system has just been opened at 732 South Broadway, Los Angeles. Commenting on the unique splendor of its appointments, many prominent transportation men proclaim it the finest railroad ticket office in the West, if not in the United States. Just a half block south of Seventh on the east side of Broadway, where the traffic count proves this intersection to be the busiest corner in the world. It is estimated that more than 100,000 pedestrians alone pass the new Union Pacific office every day. Two periods of Spanish architecture have been combined in the design and decoration of the Union Pacific office. The walls are fashioned after the more primitive style with rough plaster over stone, characteristic of the Spanish buildings that predate the plateresque and rococo periods. The ceiling scheme is definitely from the Renaissance period of Spain with elaborate and intricate designs worked out in warm tones of slenna blue and buff, high-lighted with bronze and silver overintent. Adding to the richness suggestive of the days when the dons were at the peak of their affluence in Spain, hand-hewn beams of dark walnut, aged and antique, support the ceiling between the pilasters. Immense oil paintings in antique frames six feet high and eight feet wide decorate the wall panels, showing nine of the principal tourist attractions along the Union Pacific. These add an alluringly cheerful atmosphere to the office that carries a subtle travel suggestion to all who enter. Space for eight ticket salesmen has been provided along a broad elbow-high counter with every mechanical aid to increase speed and accuracy of service. Anaheim is now in Britain. N. R. Dean Bode of Anaheim, on the 'Evolution of Music.' The talk of the day was to have been delivered by Mrs. M. E. Spragins on 'Current' Events,' but when it was learned that the Anaheim divine was in the city and available, Mrs. Spragins gladly yielded her place to the distinguished visitor. "Rev. Bode held a firm grasp on the attention of his audience from the first to the last utterance on his subject. He delved into the details that had to do with the discovery of certain musical instruments in a manner that was both enlightening and fascinating. "For instance, he told of the first efforts at creating an organ. The ancients noticed that the wind, blowing against different growing reeds produced different tones and then, by cutting and placing them in a row, they were able to produce a melody by blowing on them. However, as this was a tiresome process, they enclosed the reeds and blew into a hole at one end, which eliminated the neck-twisting operation. "The harp was made, the speaker explained, when the ororgines noted that different length bow and arrow strings created various tones. By blowing into a cow's horn they learned the art of creating a wind instrument blown by the mouth. "Rev. Bode discussed at length the origin of harmony and melody, demonstrating his points by the rendition of classical, and that which he termed "pickle" music, using a piano in his tests." Anaheim Now Can Talk With London Telephone Communication Extended to Great Britain Anaheim and the entire United States is now in telephone touch with Great Britain. N. R. Powley, general manager of The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, held the first conversation from Southern California to Great Britain Saturday morning (February 26) talking to H. E. Shreeve in London, assistant to vice-president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. Telephone officials and newspaper men listened in on the conversation, which marked the last step in opening transatlantic telephone service to the entire United States. Following Mr. Powley's opening conversation, the service was thrown open to the public. Calls to Great Britain are placed with the long distance operator in the regular manner. Applications for the service were received by the telephone company beginning Friday. The rates for service between England and any point on the Pacific coast are the same, the charges being $87 for three minutes and $29 for each additional minute or fraction of a minute. Calls are accepted at the same rate on person basis, the distant telephone is reached but not the party desired, a report charge of $10 is made. Evening and night discounted rates do not apply to transatlantic service. The hours of service on the Pacific coast are from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Pacific standard time, or 1:30 to 6 p.m., British time. Transatlantic telephone service from the Pacific coast has been made possible by close co-operation between the Bell System and the British post office. The complete circuit to Southern California, going and coming, consists of a union of 7000 miles of telephone wire and 6300 miles of ether path. Calls originating in the United States are handled over the regular telephone circuits to a long distance office of the Bell System in New York. At this point equipment is provided to separate the transmission toward London from that received from London. Eastbound transmission is carried by telephone lines to the radio transmitting station at Rocky Point, Long Island; thence by radio to the receiving station at Wroughton, England. From Wroughton the transmission passes by wire telephony to the long distance office of the general post office. At this point is located segregating apparatus similar to that in New York. From the general post office the calls are handled over the ordinary telephone plant to the London subscriber. Westbound, the transmission from the London subscriber, which reaches the London long distance office over the regular wire plant and is there segregated from the eastbound transmission, is carried over ordinary telephone lines to the transmitting station at Rugby, from which it proceeds by radio to the receiving station at Houlton, Maine. From Houlton to New York, as from Wroughton to London, the received transmission is handled over telephone lines and at the New York long distance office it passes through the combining apparatus and is delivered to the subscriber over his regular telephone circuit.
