OBSERVATIONS
BY A CONTRIBUTOR
EDDIE, QUICK—THE BLUE PRINT
APRACTICAL man, speaking of controlling the water in the Santa Ana river, says: Let all the property owners along the river form districts and each locality dredge the river bed for a distance of three miles, with an intervening space untouched for a like distance. This new excavation should be about twenty feet deep. Then when the flood comes the water would make a new bed the entire length of the river, carrying all the sand out into the ocean.
LITTLE BOY BLUE, COME BLOW YOUR HORN
TIME was when you could stand on the Olive bridge of olden times and look down twenty feet to the water below. Then the stream was confined to a narrow channel. Today the water running under the bridge is within less than six feet of the floor of the structure. During all these years the growth in the river, accumulating the sand and brush, has raised the bed until now it is really higher than the land lying next to it on the west side. Surely something must be done to remove this menace.
RUNNING WATER AT YOUR DOOR
AN OBSERVING taxpayer says, after studying this river problem, that it would be a good idea to dig a new channel in the old Santa Ana river about twenty feet deep. He feels sure that a permanent flow of water would then be obtained. This could in turn be pumped out for irrigation.
BE SURE YOU'RE RIGHT, THEN GO AHEAD
MANY practical men say that check dams and dredging out the channels are the only things that will ever give proper protection from river overflow. Building levees at best are only temporary devices, and do not cure the evil.
LEAST OF THE TWO EVILS
WHEN that crude oil was being deposited upon their lands, during the recent high water, orchardists were praying for a still greater overflow from the river and barrancas, hoping that the water would come and carry away the oil.

NO CHANCE FOR ARGUMENT
THE Chinese have a way all their own when it comes to stopping plotters against their government. When the situation becomes tense, the swordsmen get busy and chop off the heads of the offenders.
RUSHING THE STILL
AN ARTICLE in the paper says bootlegging is not what it used to be. It is said profits are smaller than a few years ago, and that the grade of illicitly made liquor is so poor that many bootleggers are actually ashamed to sell it.
LOOKING AFTER EVERY LITTLE THING
THE recent heavy downpour demonstrated one fact more forcibly than another; and that is, in some sections besides having a family car, provision should also be made to have a boat.
ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO
THE President vetoed that farm bill, and he was right. The idea of fixing a price for a certain article would be the worst kind of class legislation. Were that law in effect, there would be a tremendous supply with no demand. Would be like running water in a bathtub with the plug out.
THE WORM HAS TURNED
THREE men in jail in an eastern state, sent there for non-alimony payments, have sent out a call to all the others in the wide open spaces to send in their application to join the Alimony Payers' Protective Association, which they have started. It is expected that the membership will exceed 100,000. The purpose of the association is to band the members together and start a statewide campaign to "minimize the number of parasites, masquerading as wives, who now blackmail their husbands and ex-huntsbands for all the gold they can beg, borrow and steal." It is said it is not necessary the applicant for membership shall be or shall have been in jail to pay his alimony. As long as he has alimony decrees against him he is eligible. It is said alimony payers are subject to unlimited persecution, mental, physical and financial sufferings.
DID YOU EVER HEAR THIS ONE?
MAN, who is known for his veracity, says a merchant once had a rattlesnake in his show window as a drawing card, and the reptile lived in there four years without eating. Huh-huh, that's what he said. Recently a remarkable picture was shown in a downtown window, where a rattlesnake springs and bites a rabbit that right then came jumping by. The snake was out for his frugal meal. Of course, the rabbit does not go far after that. It succumbs and the rattler, having a keen sense of smell, soon locates its victim and proceeds to put his quarry in shape for service. First the bunny is squeezed into as small a quantity as possible, and when it has been made over, the snake swallows him, bones and all. As snakes are not heavy eaters, one rabbit usually lasts a long time.

WOULD'T KNOW THE OLD PLACE
AN ARTICLE in the paper says there are more cars than sinks in the kitchen, and it is said the radio's voice is getting hoarse in the rural districts, while the swishing of the suds in the modern washing machines grows apace. They say that many necessities are lacking where lots of luxuries abound. While the vacuum cleaner has not as yet swept the bristly broom from the home, there are any number of dwellings that have phonographs, radios and pianos. And the dwellers now in great numbers are rolling along out in the wide open spaces.
THE ROAD TO FAME BECKONS
TO READ in the paper the way some of the men in high office conduct themselves, a constituent on the bleachers visualizes a group of hombres who perchance are in the wrong pew. This idea of a man highly honored calling his colleague a "dirty liar" and asking him to come outside and fight it out, stamps him as being a man who perhaps would be a whale of a fellow to act as manager for some boxing exponent. Or maybe he could don the mitts and get into the professional game himself. There is lots of money for the guy who can become champion, and they say prizefighters sometimes are made over night. It is possible that some of these pugilistically inclined gentlemen in the high circles may have missed their calling, and if they just could get their stride, their names might appear on the big electric signboards. Anyhow, fighting is bad for the eyes, and if a fellow happened to get a pair of impaired optics, he would have to spend a lot of money for raw beefsteak before he could go home and meet the plebiscitum.
