Readjustment of Telephone Rates
Users to Benefit by Change in Transcontinental Service
Important changes involving a general readjustment in transcontinental rates, and in the evening and night period during which reduced rates apply, are announced by the Bell system. The changes are effective October 1. They are made for the benefit of transcontinental service and to eliminate service difficulties which the present schedule has brought about.
The net result of the readjustment in rates will be a saving to the telephone users throughout the United States of approximately three million dollars a year. Substantial reductions will be made in transcontinental rates; for example, the day station-to-station rate between Los Angeles and Chicago will be $7.70 instead of $11.10; between Los Angeles and New York, $10.75 instead of $15.65; between San Francisco and Chicago, $8.25 instead of $11.90; between San Francisco and New York, $11.30 instead of $16.50. Long distance cables, carrier systems, vacuum tube repeaters, loading coils and other improved devices and methods, resulting from continuous scientific research and development applied to the telephone industry, have effected economies on the longer circuits, and have a share in making these reductions possible.
One of the interesting changes from the public's viewpoint is that by which one and a half hours have been added to the reduced rate period. Reduced rates on transcontinental station-to-station calls will begin at 7 p.m., instead of 8:30 p.m., as formerly. Between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., the discount will be approximately 25 percent of the transcontinental day station-to-station rates, and from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., about 50 per cent of the day rates. Because of the unsatisfactory service conditions which it brought about, the existing midnight Jones' backfield was looser than he desired and he hopes to create a more unified attack in 1926. This will have to be attained in four early games, for the Trojans meet California and Stanford in successive Saturdays as the fifth and sixth contests on the program. Jones will have eight letter men back for his backfield.
Only three former University of California gridsters have entered the realms of professional football. Roy Baker, star fullback in 1922, will play with George Wilson's roving team. Johnny Hawkins, captain of the 1924 Trojan squad, will play guard, and Henry Lefebvre, fullback at Southern California last year, will in the backfield of "Brick" Muller's Los Angeles outfit.
Safety duties for the University of Southern California will fall into the hands of either Don Williams or Vie Orsatti this season. In 1925 Coach Howard Jones had only one man who was suited to the work of running back punts, and this man, Bill Cook, is now graduated. Other quarterbacks who return showed an inability to handle these duties well. Among all the backs, Orsatti was the greatest kick returner, and he weighed only 150 pounds, which handicapped him in regular play. In all his prep school and college career, Orsatti has never dropped a punt. Williams, who is slated as regular quarterback, may develop into a good safety man.
By walking along scaffolding nine stories up, Charles Boren, University of Southern California halfback, has tested the effectiveness of his injured knee, and says it will be all right this season. Boren was regular half last season, but dislocated his knee just after the Stanford game. The knee used to slip out when he was walking, but has stood the test this summer when Boren carried building material to workmen far above the street level.

One of the interesting changes from the public's viewpoint is that by which one and a half hours have been added to the reduced rate period. Reduced rates on transcontinental station-to-station calls will begin at 7 p.m., instead of 8:30 p.m. as formerly. Between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. the discount will be approximately 25 percent of the transcontinental day station-to-station rates, and from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., about 50 per cent of the day rates. Because of the unsatisfactory service conditions which it brought about, the existing midnight discount is discontinued on transcontinental calls.
Under the new schedule, transcontinental station-to-station calls may be made at substantial reductions as early as 7 p.m., and persons wishing to take advantage of the lowest rates of the 24 hours may make their calls any time after 8:30 p.m. Thus, although the midnight discount is discontinued, the longer reduced rate period and the substantial reductions applying in basic rates to distant points mean that this change will make little difference in the cost of night calls.
By this move the Bell system expects to improve service by eliminating complications at midnight which have resulted in delays and put a heavy burden on its facilities and employees. At the more important centers it has meant retaining a large force of young women operators to care for a sudden and short-lived burst of traffic. During much of the time the operators kept on duty in anticipation of this temporary rush have had little to do, then a short period in which they have been entirely too busy to give the best service, and following that a sharp tapering off in business at an early morning hour when few of the girls could return to their homes.
With this condition growing more pronounced, the Bell system has been facing a difficult and serious responsibility. It has become necessary to maintain dormitories in the larger central offices in which many operators required only for a short period, have been housed for the rest of the night. These hours of duty have, of course, been undesirable and hard to fill. The spreading of the transcontinental traffic over the lengthened reduced rate period will relieve this situation.
Another change that will be welcomed is the extension of the privilege of reversing charges to include transcontinental station-to-station calls—whether placed during the day, evening or night.
FOOTBALL GOSSIP
Football gossip for the first time has shifted to the extreme south of the Pacific Coast Conference in its search for the probable winner of the title this season. Throughout the entire west the cry "Southern California is the team to beat" prevails.
Although Southern California has been a dangerous quantity in the west since the Trojans were admitted to conference standing, in 1921, this is the most spoken knee, and says it will withstand all seasons but last season, but dislocated his knee just after the Stanford game. The knee used to slip out when he was walking, but has stood the test this summer when Boren carried building material to workmen far above the street level.
KANSAS TO PICNIC
All who ever lived in Kansas are called to meet for a great picnic reunion, all day Saturday, September 11, 1926, in Sycamore Grove park, Los Angeles.
Go as early as possible and spend the day with friends. There will be county registers and headquarters so all may find the old friends and neighbors, even with ten thousand present. The brief program will open about 2 o'clock, songs, short talks, roll call.
The main purpose will be to let the people talk and enjoy themselves. All the tourists and visitors from the old home state will be made welcome and may meet thousands of old-time friends.
Coffee will be served free to all who buy the souvenir badges. Each one who learns of this is asked to pass the word along.

FOOTBALL GOSSIP
Football gossip for the first time has shifted to the extreme south of the Pacific Coast Conference in its search for the probable winner of the title this season. Throughout the entire west the cry "Southern California is the team to beat" prevails.
Although Southern California has been a dangerous quantity in the west since the Trojans were admitted to conference standing, in 1921, this is the first season in which fans have spoken of the southerners as the favorite in the flag race.
With 33 mon from last year's squad, including 21 letter men, returning, the Trojans have the greatest possibilities in regard to material on the coast. Twenty-four numeral men from the undefeated freshman squad of 1925 will also be available.
The race for the title seems to be centered within the state of California, between Southern California, California and Stanford, although the Oregon Aggies, Idaho and Oregon will make a strong bid for the top honors.
Belief that the 18 years of coaching experience gained by Howard Jones at Yale, Syracuse, Ohio State, Iowa and Duke, will enable him to give the University of Southern California a championship football team this fall is being expressed by Pacific coast fans.
Jones spent his first season in the west at Southern California last year, and fans expected him to have to take a year to get accustomed to the Pacific coast type of play after his mentorship in the east and middle west. It is pointed out that his defeats at the hands of Stanford and Washington State last season were due to mistakes which can easily be avoided this fall, since Jones now knows what his men can do and how to season gridsters on the far western coast.
Coach Jones was an all-American at Yale, where he played end. While supervising the general team play, he will work mostly with the line. His backfield men will be Aubrey Devine, all-American quarterback for two years under Jones at Iowa, and Willis Hunter, director of athletics, who was a famous fullback at Oberlin college.
A more stable backfield will be the aim of Coach Howard Jones at the University this fall. Last year in his first season at Southern California,
