Governor Given Great Ovation
(Continued from Page One)
ringing voice, and was many times applauded with long continued hand-clapping. His witty sallies met with bursts of laughter.
Thomas B. Talbert, chairman of the board of supervisors, spoke of the large amount of state money which had been expended during Governor Richardson's administration upon the roads of this county. Not a dollar had ever been expended here before by any governor, except for the state highway running through the county. During the present administration more than $2,500,000 of state money had been expended upon paved roads of Orange county. He urged the people to rally to the governor's support and roll up a rousing majority for him on August 31.
H. A. Lake of Garden Grove said that Governor Richardson was the only governor who had ever heard of the Santa Ana river. He had appropriated $17,000 for a survey of that stream and that survey was now being made. We have had floods in this county and may have them again in future, and this survey in being made so that the waters of this turbulent stream may be controlled. He looked for further appropriations of money from the state. To change the governor at this time would mean that these appropriations would probably be lost. He urged that a great majority be rolled up in Orange county for Governor Richardson.
Dr. H. A. Johnston spoke upon state institutions, which are being better cared for under the present administration than ever before. The state has 20,000 wards in these institutions. It is just as important for the state to care for these unfortunates as it is to educate our children.
C. C. Chapman of Fullerton spoke in terms of great praise of the governor, who is giving the people a business-like administration. He is opposed to the present system of making nominations for office and is not in favor of the writers in Southern California.
"Out of a membership of about 100 at the time the Southern California Editorial Association was formed, forty years ago, Henry Kuchel of Anaheim, E. P. Clarke of Riverside and editor of the News Tribune are the only pioneer-day members left."
Bill Cook of this city has been engaged to coach the University of Southern California freshmen football team next year. Bill is a star on the football field.

C. C. Chapman of Fullerton spoke in terms of great praise of the governor, who is giving the people a business-like administration. He is opposed to the present system of making nominations for office and is not in favor of the initiative and referendum. The governor is free from boss control, and that is why they are fighting him. He urged the voters of Orange county to get out and work for the governor and roll up a great majority for him on election day. His address was very well received and was given much applause.
A. W. Rutan spoke upon the governor's appointments to the Judiciary. Stanley Reinhaus spoke for the American Legion. Mrs. Grubb spoke on the public school system. They complimented the governor and urged his re-election.
Old-Time Story of Early Campaign

afternoon and another large crowd gathered to hear them here. We saw Knight again early in the evening and informed him grape growers were being lined up for Pond and that it was of the utmost importance to stop this stampede. He promised to do his best to get them back into the fold.
Knight spoke for an hour and a half on the political issues of the day, and made one of the best addresses ever heard in this city. As he was nearing the close of his speech and had said nothing concerning the sweet wine bill, we sent word to him by a personal friend not to forget this important matter. He seemed to have forgotten all about it. Finally he said:
"Yes my friends, and there is the sweet wine bill which comes to you as a gift from the Republican party in the McKinley tariff bill. Now, what is the sweet wine bill? You know better than I do what it means to you! You know that it means saving you from bankruptcy in your great business. The Republican party gives you this sweet wine bill without charging you a single dollar for it."
Knight made one of his eloquent perorations and closed his speech amid tumultuous applause. We noticed that many of the grape growers present were applauding him vigorously.
We saw him immediately after the meeting, when he told us he had lost our notes. We felt that he had missed a great chance, but congratulated him upon his speech. We walked down town, accompanied by a number of friends. At the bank corner we ran into a score or more of grape growers.

We walked down town, accompanied by a number of friends. At the bank corner we ran into a score or more of grape growers. Our heart sank inside of us as we approached them, for we felt that Knight had failed to grasp the importance of the subject.
As we came up to them, they came forward and shook hands. The leader said:
"By George, did you hear what Knight said about the sweet wine bill. That was the greatest speech we ever heard. We are for Markham, every one of us!"
We later saw Knight, and had a good laugh with him about it all. Markham swept the state and made a good governor.

OLDEST EDITOR IN COUNTY
Our young friend Edgar Johnson, editor of the News Tribune, makes the following very kind reference to an eroneous item recently appearing in a number of Southern California newspapers:
"At the time the National Editorial Association visited Orange county, an item appeared in a number of publications, stating that in point of service the editor of the News Tribune was the oldest editor in Orange county. This is a mistake.
"When the writer was publishing a small weekly paper in Santa Ana, forty years ago or longer, Henry and Charles Kuchel were publishing The Anaheim Gazette. During this long period Henry Kuchel has been editor of The Gazette, therefore in point of service he is the oldest editor in the county. Forty years ago there was no Orange county—it was Los Angeles county.
"Many years ago, Charles sold his interest in The Anaheim Gazette to his brother, Henry Kuchel, who is well known as one of the best editorial..."

The American Legion of Orange county is planning one of the biggest events of the Orange County Fair on the opening day. There will be special Legion events on the field in the afternoon, in addition to the million dollar stock parade, which will be held at that time. In the evening of the first day, spectacular fireworks will be set off in front of the grandstand, in addition to the initial presentation of the historical pageant, "The Birth of an Empire."
Miss Sophie Rimpau of this city and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Alexander, Jr., of Los Angeles, returned on Friday from a four months' trip to Europe. They shipped their machine across and motored over the country, spending a most enjoyable time. Their visit to the British Isles was cut short by reason of the general strike, which began while they were in London. They left England at once, going to Belgium, Holland, France, Germany and Spain.

Sam Jernigan's Office is open on a Business Basis
Sam Jernigan is closing his first term as sheriff of Orange county remarkably free from personal criticism.
No shadow of suspicion has been cast against him, and the highest commendation is expressed for his unfailing cordiality.
Even those who express a preference for another candidate qualify their selection by saying they haven't anything personally against the present incumbent. The only criticism heard is of a minor nature and is directed against some member of the sheriff's staff, but this character of criticism will apply to any organization whether political or otherwise. No newspaper, no bank, no dry goods store escapes this kind.

political procedure of building

Therefore, he has refrained from using

a “good fellow.”
If you want a sheriff who attends to
business, who has saved the county
