THE ANAHEIM GAZETTE HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Proprietor Entered at the Anaheim, California, Post Office as second class matter. A FRIEND OF ORANGE COUNTY GOVERNOR RICHARDSON has proven himself to be a good friend of Orange county, and during his administration has appropriated more money for betterments here than all the governors preceding him in all of California's history. This policy on the part of the governor should meet with warm appreciation on the part of our people, and an expression of this esteem should be made at the ballot box a week from next Tuesday. If this friendly policy at Sacramento is to be continued, Governor Richardson should be returned to office. Out of the $58,000,000 of state highway bonds voted by the people, not a dollar has ever been expended in Orange county by any preceding governor, except for the main highway running through the county. Millions of dollars have been appropriated to other counties with a far less assessable valuation, but not one dollar for Orange county. During Governor Richardson's administration, more than $2,500,000 of state road money has been expended in this county, including an appropriation for the highway along the Orange county coast. Further appropriations from this state highway fund are confidently expected. Orange county is entitled to this money and should receive it. Governor Richardson has appropriated $17,000 for a survey of the Santa Ana river, and this work is now in progress. No governor in the history of the state has ever appropriated a dollar for this river. We have had overflows from this river in the past, and floods in wet winters are a continual menace. This condition of affairs is abhorent to the governor, and a survey now in progress is for the purpose of stopping these overflows for all time. The irrigators of the valley should appreciate this assistance from the state administration. The governor stands four-square on Colorado river development, for he knows better than any other man in California that if Southern California is to grow, we must have water from that river for irrigation and domestic purposes. He stands for economy in the expenditure of public money, and has a surplus of $10,000,000 in the state treasury at Sacramento. When he entered office, three and a half years ago, the state treasury had in it not one single dollar. It is the first time in the history of California that the state treasury has had so magnificent a surplus. He is being fought by as corrupt a gang of political corruptionists as ever disgraced this state. Should another man unfortunately succeed him, we might as well bid goodbye to any further appropriations. The ovation tendered Governor Richardson at Santa Ana on last Friday evening was an earnest of the manner in which the people of the county regard him. Let the county wheel into line and roll up a tremendous majority. COOLIDGE DEFEATED JOHNSON LET IT be remembered that two years ago Hiram Johnson stumped this state against Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States. Johnson, in his over-weaning conceit, imagined himself to be a candidate for President, and campaigned throughout the state for the election of delegates favorable to him at the national Republican convention. Throughout the Northwest he had carried on a campaign against Coolidge, and was defeated in every state excepting South Dakota, where his seven delegates were elected, but these were released by him at the national convention and they supported Coolidge. In California the Johnson ticket was decisively defeated at the primary election, and Coolidge carried the state in November by nearly 400,000 votes. Let it be remembered that in the Taft campaign Johnson so manipulated political affairs in California that the names of Taft electors were prevented from being printed upon the ballot. Let it be remembered that he attacked President Harding, and even as that great and good man lay dying at the Palace hotel, he objected to the publication of his address which was to have been delivered in San Francisco, but which, because of his illness, he was unable to make. Advance sheets of the address had been delivered to the San Francisco newspapers, and a request made by the dying President that they appear in print. Johnson objected, and this speech did not appear. As President Harding's party left San Francisco with the body of their chief, they wept and felt bitter resentment down deep in their hearts that Johnson had prevented the speech from being printed. Let these and other misdeeds of Hiram Johnson be remembered by the people of California. He is now campaigning this state against the re-election of Governor Richardson and Senator Shortridge. Candidates against these two statesmen were selected by him personally, and are being supported by the remnants of the old Johnson machine. Is it not about time to relegate this trouble-maker to the As President Harding's party left San Francisco with the body of their chief, they wept and felt bitter resentment down deep in their hearts that Johnson had prevented the speech from being printed. Candidates against these two statesmen were selected by him personally, and are being supported by the remnants of the old Johnson machine. Is it not about time to relegate this trouble-maker to the woodpile? Let Orange county wheel into line with good majorities for Richardson and Shortridge, and that Hiram Johnson be relegated once and for all into the discard of unsavory political machinations. Let Richardson and Shortridge be overwhelmingly re-elected, and that Hiram Johnson be given a stinging rebuke, which he so eminently deserves. ...but Buttress Wallboard fined the fire to one room!"
