Average Butterfat Production Shown
A race which is going on within the county is not attended with the usual glamour and noise of an automobile race or an aeroplane race, but is of intense interest and of more value than either—that of the butterfat production of the dairies, as secured by the cow tester from month to month. This race has no prize given to the winner, other than increased returns in the monthly cream check. The cow tester secures monthly milk and butterfat production of each individual cow in the herds of the association members. From these records an accurate account of each individual may be obtained.
From the April report, an average increase of four pounds of butterfat per cow is noted. This, on the basis of 95 cents per pound for butterfat, means an increase in dollars and cents of $3.80 per cow for the month, which for a herd of 20 cows would reinforce the check to the extent of $76. The report shows 702 cows' tested, with an average milk production of 988 pounds milk and 38.6 pounds butterfat.
Ostercamp Brothers' herd averaged 49.15 pounds butterfat, which is the high average.
Egg Laying Contest Attracts Attention
Unique among the many egg-laying contests in the United States, the Pomona contest last year had more hens producing over 200 eggs than any other contest in the United States. From the April report of this contest, the record obtained last year seems well on its way to being equalled or surpassed this year. This April report concludes the half-way mark of the contest. All of the Orange county entries, of which there are five in number, have received recognition either in high entries for the month, high hen, or in production of all entries.
The White Leghorn entry of Elmer H. Koenig is the only one that gained a place among the Orange county entries this month in high ten entries for the month. His entry averaged 24.5 eggs for the month, the high entry of which, owned by Hoover Brothers, averaged 25.9.
Will Hatch poultry ranch had two hens laying 28 eggs apiece for the month, being exceeded by three other hens, the high one of which laid 30 eggs.
Block's poultry ranch has two hens among the 13 high hens to date, one of which has laid 141 eggs and the other 142. The high hen of the contest, owned by Moses L. Frick of Bell, has 154 eggs to her credit since the contest started, the first of November. Block's poultry ranch White Leghorn entry still maintains second place in production of all entries, with a production of 1171 eggs, being exceeded only by that of Moses L. Frick's entry with a production of 1287 eggs.

Codling Moth Control Subject of Field Day
One of the most important field days scheduled this spring for the walnut growers of Orange county will be in the form of a codling moth control demonstration to be held Saturday, May 22, at the Maybury ranch, between Santa Ana and Tustin.
The field day will be held under the auspices of the Agricultural Extension Service co-operating with the horticultural commission. Arrangements are being made for a practical dusting and spraying demonstration where machines will be in operation, showing details of both methods. Those participating on the program will include Prof. H. J. Quayle, entomologist of the citrus experiment station; Mr. Flanders, entomologist for the Saticoy walnut district; W. B. Hooper, walnut specialist; College of Agriculture, and A. A. Brock, horticultural commissioner.
According to a report from the inspectors of the horticultural office, the control season will start about May 20 to 22 and will last between two and three weeks. W. H. Wright, field inspector in charge of the walnut codling moth campaign, states that the motils are quite active at this time and, with the present weather outlook, a comparatively heavy egg laying is taking place.
The field day is planned for the early part of the control period in order that growers may see actual methods of control work. Remember the date—Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m., at the Maybury ranch, corner East Fruit street and Tustin avenue.
