Cypress Notes (By W. C. MILLER) Cypress folks are rejoicing, for the ugly monument that has halted the town's progress is being removed after it has stood a black, grim sentinel for over two years. Some three and a half years ago our little town came to life and staged a real estate and building boom. The firm of Priddy and Sconce subdivided a small tract just north of town and in less than ninety days there were twenty-one homes erected. Two other tracts, one west and one southeast of town, were thrown on the market and sold within a few weeks. Other properties were in line for division into small acreage and the future of the town was very bright. Suddenly rumors of oil leasing began to fly about, and just as suddenly landers were taken off the market, Land owners began to dream of another Signal Hill or Santa Fe Springs field and they simply refused to sell at any price. Thanksgiving Day two years ago the Gaddie Oil Co. spudded in on the Wicker property. Land owners sat tight and watched the steam pour from the pumps and boilers and dreamed of luxuries that wealth would bring. For several months the drillers plied their work earnestly and sank deeper and deeper toward the black gold. A depth of 2700 feet was reached and casing set. With the people all on edge waiting for the development of a great field, the company suddenly developed internal trouble. Months went by without a tap turned. After seven long months, the York Drilling Company appeared. Gaddie, who had supervised operations, had been deposed, also Meeker the geologist, had been busted. The new drilling company claimed to have found the casing buckled at 2700 feet and weeks were spent drilling through and shunting the casing to one side. This was accomplished and the drill ate on down to the 4000 foot level and stopped. Reports that financial backing had given out were broadcast. Months and weeks ago four real estate deals in the past week. Land owners are coming down to earth again and are beginning to place real values on their properties again, but it will take years to remove the effect of the "oil craze," for expert drillers who were employed on the well claim that there was a wonderful showing of oil and that the drill never sank deep enough to prove or disprove the field. Any way the unsightly derrick will soon be a memory only. Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Scally are on a business and pleasure trip into Mexico. They motored to Negales and will en train there for the central and eastern part of Mexico. Earl Russell has traded his home off Sprague avenue for Long Beach property. The Russells will make their home in Anaheim where Mr. Russell is a hardwood flooring contractor. C. E. Crouse of Long Beach is moving on the Russell place today. Mr. Crouse expects to increase the poultry plant which was built up by Mr. Russell. Ernest Reinnle is sporting about in a new Reo sport roadster. Mrs. M. C. Chase has been ill for some time but is reported to be recuperating now. Mrs. Maude Monroe of Prescott, Arizona is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. Miller for the holidays. Jack Founey is the proud owner of a Packard sedan. A car driven by D. Eyman Huff collided with one of the Penhall Brothers trucks at the intersection of Lincoln and Magnolia avenues Monday evening. The Huff car was considerably damaged but no one was injured in the collision. The school and community Christmas tree and entertainment will be held next Wednesday evening at the school hall. The P. T. A. raised funds through After seven long months, the York Drilling Company appeared. Gindik who had supervised operations, had been deposed, also Meeker the geologist, had been busted. The new drilling company claimed to have found the casing buckled at 2700 feet and weeks were spent drilling through and shunting the casing to one side. This was accomplished and the drill ate on down to the 4000 foot level and stopped. Reports that financial backing had given out were broadcast. Months and months have passed since then, there have been rumors of reorganization etc. But at last the machinery has been sold and the derrick will be moved along with the machinery to the new Signal been removed in the last week and when the derrick is gone it will be like removing the quarantine sign from the school and community Christmas tree and entertainment will be held next Wednesday evening at the school hall. The P. T. A. raised funds through a box supper to finance the tree. Miss Catherine Bettsold, sister of the late Henry Bettsold, died at the home of her sister-in-law on South Philadelphia Tuesday. She was born in Germany 65 years ago, but most of her life has been spent in America. She has made her home in Anaheim the past three years.
