County Oil Fields Show Big Increase Small Operators Vieing With Corporations for 'Black Gold' Oil companies are drilling for "black gold" in practically every section of Orange county. During the past several weeks renewed activity has been noticed in almost every community. Garden Grove and San Juan Capistrano are to receive their second test for oil. Development work in the older fields of the county has maintained a steady march forward. The outlook for a new oil field in Orange county was bright today with the announcement that the Zenith Oil company, a Los Angeles concern which is backed by eastern capital has struck a 24 gravity oil sand extending from a depth of 536 feet to 508 feet. The well is located in the Olinda district near Telegraph canyon, and is about one and one-half miles northeast of a 2300-acre tract of land which is being drilled by the Quadra Oil company. The Zenith well is standing cemented at the present time, and the company is installing rotary equipment in a second rig for a deep test of the productive field. The Quadra Oil company is owned by J. W. Jameson and S. W. McComb, manufacturers of Propello gasoline. This company has 2345 acres under lease in Telegraph canyon. A combination standard and rotary outfit has been installed by the company and two 2000 barrel storage tanks have been erected. Approximately 1145 acres of the land being drilled by the company belong to a group of Huntington Beach men, who include J. H. Macklin, F. L. Slusher, H. T. Dunning and Warren Cady. There has been great activity in the Telegraph canyon section during the past several weeks, and numerous geological parties from the various oil companies have been over the land. Lenses are reported to be in demand and in some instances it is reported bonuses of $125 per acre have been paid, with $4 activity is in evidence. The Superior Oil company has been particularly active in this section lately, and has secured a number of leases. Location has been made, for the Superior's new derrick on the Osmun ranch, situated south of the McCracken property. The Superior has a large portion of the water company's property under lease. The Chicksan Oil company has approximately 100 acres under lease northwest of Yorba Linda and is now erecting a steel rig for its first well. A company controlled by E. L. Blanton, Donald Ley, William Kidwell and William Ross, Signal Hill operators, has leased the Van Patten and Galeedin ranches, which lie northwest of Yorba Linda. The property leased has two small producing wells. According to reports, the company will drill several additional wells at once. The Petroleum Midway company has a rig up for a new well on the Yarnell property. It will be known as Yarnell No. 18. The Union Oil company will start drilling its No. 12 well on De Berry hill at Yorba Linda within a few days. Yorba Linda has approximately 40 producing wells. Success of the Birch-Royer Oil company in securing a water shut-off in its deep test well in the Brea field is expected to result/in a number of deep wells being drilled in the field in the near future. Drilling was suspended in the Birch-Royer well three-weeks ago with hole at 5175 feet. From 5020 to the bottom, the well presented a number of substantial oil sand and heavily saturated shale showings, and a string of 8% pipe was set and cemented at 5018 feet. The first attempt at shutting off water failed but a re-cement job has accomplished what has prevented for more than two years any deep test from being made. Power Company to Make Extensions Edison People to Spend $325,000 in This County Standard and rotary outfit has been installed by the company and two 2000 barrel storage tanks have been erected. Approximately 1145 acres of land being drilled by the company belong to a group of Huntington Beach men, who include J. H. Macklin, F. L. Slusher, H. T. Dunning and Warren Cady. There has been great activity in the Telegraph canyon section during the past several weeks, and numerous geological parties from the various oil companies have been over the land. Leases are reported to be in demand and in some instances it is reported bonuses of $125 per acre have been paid, with $4 per acre rental each month until drilling starts. The Standard Oil company recently started several new wells on the Bolsa Chica lease west of Huntington Beach. Development of the tract, which lies just west of Twenty-third street and along the Coast highway, has occupied the company for some time. Several promising wells have been brought in on the tract recently. King G. Gillette is operating on the northeast side of town, where he recently acquired large holdings. The Gypsy wells, which Gillette took over from the Gypsy company, are his main producers at the present time. Production in the Huntington Beach field is remaining remarkably stable, the average daily yield remaining at about 42,000 barrels. At Newport Beach, activity is confined at the present time to the Yerkes and the Pasadena Oil companies. The Yerkes company is shipping about three tank cars of heavy oil per week and is the most consistent producer on the flats. There are now about 30 rigs up on the flats near Newport Beach. The Costa Mesa field is the scene of renewed activities, following the successful completion of the Sunland Oil company well recently, and the excellent showings which have been encountered by the Julian Petroleum company. Nearly 20 rigs are up in the Mesa district. Tom Sharkey is working on an improved plan to make his oil mine produce in commercial quantities. The Bruce company is expecting to start a large development project in the near future which will include the drilling of nearly 100 wells. The Marine corporation is putting down a deep test well in the northeast section of Costa Mesa on the Watermar property. In the Seal Beach section, efforts are still being made to locate oil. So far very little success has crowned the efforts of the Shell Oil company and the Associated Oil company. Two test wells are being drilled in the Seal Beach district at the present time. Several records for depth in Orange county have been broken in this section. The Shell Oil company is down more than 3000 feet in its test well at Talbert, according to reports. The well is located about one-half mile north of Talbert on the Von Schriltz property. No indications of oil have been encountered, according to reports. Work is still continuing on the Santa Ana Gardens well of the Standard Oil standard and rotary outfit has been installed by the company and two 2000 barrel storage tanks have been erected. The well is located about one-half mile north of Talbert on the Von Schriltz property. No indications of oil have been encountered, according to reports. Work is still continuing on the Santa Ana Gardens well of the Standard Oil company. The company has been carrying on its activities under a cloak of silence. The fact that the Standard has started a second test well on the F. D. Plavan property about one mile east of the Santa Ana Gardens well leads oil men to believe that good showings have been encountered. The oil company which recently started operations at Fairview has suspended operations. Everything at the well yesterday was quiet and no evidences of activity could be seen. The project is backed by a wealthy Pasadena oil man. San Juan Capistrano is to get its second test well. Announcement was made recently that Pearson, Anderson and Kelley, of Los Angeles, have leased the Carr property, located one-half mile south of town, and will commence drilling operations in the near future. The Union Oil company endeavored to locate oil in the San Juan Capistrano district five years ago but was unsuccessful in the attempt. Another Orange county district to get a second oil test is Garden Grove. Undaunted by the failure of the Standard Oil company to bring in a well drilled on the Edward Chaffee property one-half mile west of Garden Grove four years ago, lease options have been secured on several hundred acres in the territory by a group of Los Angeles men. Among the Garden Grove people who have given lease options on their land are Edward Chaffee, Roy Oldfield, C. D. Luedke, Harvvey Allen and John McCollough. It is understood that under the provisions of the options, drilling operations are to start 90 days after the leases are signed. In the Yorba Linda section, increased "This has been a very notable year continued Mr. Delmiling, 'in the history of the Southern California Edison company. In February, the great Florence lake tunnel was completed, diverting the upper waters of the San Joaquin river. During the year, this tunnel has delivered, purely as a stream flow project without storage, 140,000 acre feet into Huntington lake and has contributed to filling it to its maximum capacity. This was the most difficult single undertaking in the Big Creek-San Joaquin river project and it has been one of the most world renowned successes in the history of hydro electric development." "We are now well under way on three great projects, all of which will have a direct bearing on the future of the Santa Ana district, as they will tend to provide it with practically an unlimited source of electric energy. The third 220,000 volt transmission line, 230 miles in length, between the power houses on the Big Creek-San Joaquin river and Southern California was commenced on September 1, and will be completed about January, 1927. We are also actively engaged in the Shaver lake reservoir project, which will have a storage capacity of 138,500 acre feet. It is proposed to have the Shaver lake dam ready for storing of the spring runoff in 1928 and the dam will be completed to its ultimate capacity with the runoff of the spring of 1929. When full, the water surface will be 2200 acres and a shoreline of 20 miles in length. Completion of the Shaver lake project will make possible the building of other power houses on the Big Creek-San Joaquin river project as the demand for more hydro-electric energy increases." "To keep our steam standby up to the necessary standard, work is now in progress on the additional 70,000 horsepower unit to the Long Beach steam plant, which will be completed by mid-summer of 1926. This will bring the total capacity of the company's Long Beach plant to 271,000 horsepower." "The work of the Southern California Edison company," concluded Mr. Delmiling, "is truly a people's project, and more of the people who use its service continue to become partner owners every year. There are now more than 81,000 stockholders in the Edison company, 90 per cent of whom reside in California, and the majority of them are consumers of our electric product." ANAHEIM GAZETTE The S. Q.
