WHY I WOULD CHOOSE ANAHEIM AS A GOOD PLACE OF RESIDENCE By REV. A. G. H. BODE WELL, sitting in my study, with the golden oranges swaying on the branches against my windows, I think of the beautiful song in "Mignon," which goes: "Knowst thou the land where the orange grows," and reflect it is just such a place as this that the poet longed for. How satisfying after experience of the drouths of Australian, the snow of Switzerland, the fogs of England, and the blizzards of Wyoming, to come to this mild air, neither too hot nor too cold all the year round, to be able to drive among the orange groves, between rows of密切相关 palm trees and flowers growing in prudence and a horizon of purple mountains, or to sit on the porch, and hear the mocking bird in the walnut trees and see a golden orienteering trail in the sun. I would choose Anaheim because it is a garden spot in a mild climate equal to that of the south of France or any famous portion of the world. I would choose Anaheim also because it is a city which grows and prosperes because it is up to date in its public improvements. The fine city parks with its flowers and games and plunge is the best evidence of this. As a consequence of this fine playground, juvenile delinquency is reduced to nil. I like Anaheim because its residences and lawns are neat and trim, and the streets are kept clean, and the place has all the evidences of a self-respecting American community. I would choose Anaheim as a good place for the younger folk, where nobody is too rich, and democracy reigns, where the schools are good, and have proved capable of providing from the beginning a course which affords a first-class preparation for college and business. Shakespeare's child going "unwillingly to school" is not found in Anaheim. And there are all the best opportunities for fellowship and service in the Y. M. C. Shakespeare's child going "unwillingly to school" is not found in Anaheim. And there are all the best opportunities for fellowship and service in the Y. M. C. A., the Girl Reserves, the Day Scouts, and Friendly Societies, and the multifarious activities of the young people of the churches. In Anaheim there is much to keep alive one's intellectual interests, when the memories of a famous author, Skievicz, and a great actress, Modleska still persist, and one can and book clubs, and a good library, and a Pierce club, and a Delphian society, and departments of larger societies, where you can enjoy reading and discussion. And Anaheim is close to great centers of learning and art. An hour's ride brings one to the best in symphony and opera and drama, or, if one wishes to continue college education, to two or our best universities. In Anaheim the churches have a high place in the hearts of the people. There is an old world charm in the sound of church belts in the morning air, and the Angelus ringing early and midday and evening. A proportionately large number of leading men give time and service in the netherlands of the many busy churches, and two fine institutions of the highest rating for boys and girls, many of whom are epiphoned or unprivileged, are monuments in our city of the kind and generous hearts of supporters and the self-sacrifice and devotion of workers. I like my place of residence to be in such an atmosphere of higher things. I like Anaheim because in such an atmosphere busy men and women can find time to work at the call for help for children's camps, and Red Cross, and Salvation Army relief work, and Legion homes, and for the people of low privileged countries, and because we have a Social Welfare department which functions. I would choose Anaheim because it is a friendly town, a community of houses and good neighbors, where many have grown up with the place, where it is not too much city nor too much country and one can know almost everybody in time. One neighbor will come over and help with your chicken yard, another will divert some of his water supply on to your orange trees, and another will tell you how to get rid of the scale, and everybody will help you start your Ford. "Central" is so courteous, and the gas company telephones instead of turning off your gas, and the postman, and grocery delivery man, the ice cream and the garbage man and all the others are friendly and obliquing, and the stores will get for the family what they want. (I don't want much myself), and the bank will lend you some money at a pinch if you look honest. And there is time for friends to make a little mouse trip from San Francisco and one each from San Diego, Los Angeles and Portland. Apparently, the only reason the Southern California business houses are not getting their share is that they do not go after it. Some of the merchants complain that they only see Southern California salesmen occasionally. Generally, the people throughout these states have awakened to the civilization that if they are to grow and succeed, they must look westward for outings for the crops they raise, and out in order to encourage business relations with this west coast it is necessary for them to take recognition of such commodities as we have to offer or sale and that they do not produce. Southern California has been a big buyer of the products from that country, and point buyers in Idaho predict that they will salp 7000 carloads of potatoes to Southern California this year." Before the time of man the date palm flourished on earth and its fruit was the first food of man. Many references in early Arabian and Christian records speak of the date palm as "the tree of life." Dates are grown successfully in the Cauchella and Imperial valleys. In Southern California, the product being superior to the imported fruit. An all-American count, extended to the farming area, will make possible date-growing on a large scale. Anaheim gas cheap electricity and an abundance of natural gas and oil. The Business There's the same moving substantial workmanship but that the South & Franzen take. There is no haphazard Every piece of timber and sturdy and strong every limb nail, brick for brick, dollar to answer your trust with a competition. Among the Anaheim bus entrusted to our care are: help with your chicken yard, another will divert some of his water supply on to your orange trees, and another will tell you how to get rid of the scale, and everybody will help you start your Ford. "Central" is so courteous, and the gas company telephones instead of turning off your gas, and the postman, and grocery delivery man, the iconen and the garbage man and all the others are friendly and obliging, and the stores will get for the family what they want. (I don't want much myself), and the bank will lend you some money at a pinch if you look honest. And there is time for friends to make a little music themselves in the evenings, and for almost everybody to speak the friendly word that makes the wheels of life run smoothly. And lastly I would choose Anaheim because there is still plenty to do. Add New Mart To Southland Created by a great prosperity wave that is sweeping over the entire section following several years of business slump, a huge market for Southern California factory products has suddenly been opened in Utah, southern Idaho and parts of Nevada, it was disclosed last week by Frank S. Coates, special representative of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Coates, who has just returned from a trip into the Pacific Northwest country for the Chamber of Commerce, declared the prosperity wave he brought about an increase of bank accounts and that the people of that section are anxious to establish trade relations with Southern California. "Idaho ships a tremendous amount of agricultural products, including potatoes, wool, cattle and grain, to Los Angeles and other sections of Southern California," Mr. Coates said. "In return, this state and the state surrounding it desire to buy products manufactured in Southern California and establish a co-operation which will annually benefit both." "The inter-mountain country has produced the largest crops in the experience of their farming production, following a business shamp of several years' duration, and they are getting ANAHEIM GAZETTE Ice Plant of Anaheim Making Improvements Installation of electric motors to replace steam engines, at a total expenditure of nearly $15,000 which now is under way in the Anaheim plant of the Consolidated Ice and Cold Storage Company, marks an important step in the expansion of that fast-growing organization. The two new 200 horsepower electric motors being installed will take the place of steam engines in operating the and cold storage system of the plant. Production with greater efficiency will be the principal benefit of more modern system, Manager Wilma LeVeck declares. As the only plant of its kind in Orange county, the storage plant here is filling an important need in the county. Its cold storage rooms have so far this year served as distributing centers for apple growers and elder makers of Yucalpa, Washington and Oregon, for orange growers of the Anaheim district, for local ranchers, who butcher their own meat and for onion growers of northern California. A great and glorious sunshine, the answering smiles of gorgeous flowers, and fresh green hillsides, the majesty of snow-capped peaks, theaged dignity of old Spanish missions, and both winter and summer sports combined as the world has joined them nowhere else, await the eastern tourist who comes to Southern California.
