Dodge Brothers Engineer Cites Advantages of Constant Improvements Without Yearly Models
The wisdom of Dodge Brothers policy of constantly developing one basic design instead of bringing out a new model every year, is borne out emphatically in several ways, in the opinion of Russel Huff, director of engineering. Mr. Huff is also a member of the board of directors of Dodge Brothers.
"The best evidence, of course, is the quality of Dodge Brothers present product and the pronounced satisfaction of our one and a quarter million owners. Additional strong proof is supplied by the general inclination of the industry toward the same practice. I have heard more discussion of the subject during the last six months than ever before, and it has been particularly active since our advertisement, 'Constantly Improved—But No Years Model!' appeared on bulletin."
CROWDS ATTEND OPENING OF NEW STUDEBAKER HOME
Keen interest was manifested by the hundreds of motorists who attended the formal opening of Harry D. Riley's new Studebaker home, at 151 South Los Angeles street, last Saturday evening.
A full line of the latest Studebaker models were on display in the show room, including the new Studebaker standard broughtam, the latest creation of the Studebaker engineers and said to be the finest product of the Studebaker factories.
The new home of the Studebaker is of Spanish design and decoration, and has a frontage of more than 40 feet on Los Angeles street, with the used car department located on Chestnut street, with an outlet on the alley running parallel with Chestnut street.
The formal opening of the new quarters is another step in the forward march of progress of the Harry D. Riley organization, which has maintained a steady growth during the five years it has been established in Anaheim.

"The best evidence, of course, is the quality of Dodge Brothers present product and the pronounced satisfaction of our one and a quarter million owners. Additional strong proof is supplied by the general inclination of the industry toward the same practice. I have heard more discussion of the subject during the last six months than ever before, and it has been particularly active since our advertisement, 'Constantly Improved—But No Yearly Models' appeared on bulletin boards and in magazines and newspapers all over the country.
"The public, which apparently had not previously given the subject much thought, was quick to sense the significance of such a policy, and comments from a thousand and one sources must have drifted back to other manufacturers. Our advertisement appeared just before the annual battery of new model announcements was turned loose, and naturally the contrast between Dodge Brothers policy and the general practice was made doubly vivid.
"But, even so, it was in inevitable development of the near future. John and Horace Dodge first thought of it 10 years ago, when they began building their own car, and it is a surprise to me, in view of its many obvious advantages, that it has not been more generally adopted long since.
"Even the layman can understand how much better it is for the engineering department, for example, to be concentrating all its time and thought on the refinement of one chassis and one fundamental design, than to experiment continuously with 'something new for next year.'
"It must also be apparent even to the outsider that constant changing from one design to another costs a tremendous amount of money. Dies and experimental work can easily entail an expenditure of several millions of dollars, and if this has to be done every year, there is only one way to get the money back. That is by passing the charge along to the buyer of the car. Dodge Brothers save these costs and as a result are able to give buyers more for their money.
"Then there is always the factor of depreciation. If you buy a car in July and your manufacturer brings out an entirely different car in August, what happens to the valuation on your car?
"Oh, that's a last year's model, is exactly what you get wherever you propose to sell. And the valuations..."

"Then there is always the factor of depreciation. If you buy a car in July and your manufacturer brings out an entirely different car in August, what happens to the valuation on your car?
"'Oh, that's a last year's model, is exactly what you get wherever you propose to sell it. And the valuations slump accordingly.
'So the buyer loses in two ways. He pays the extra price for the support of the model-a-year policy, and he also pays again when his car is relegated into obsolescence by the appearance of a new model.
'Little wonder the clamor for standardization is being taken up by the rank and file of the buying public.
'Everyone concedes that the resale value of Dodge Brothers motor car is unusually high. Used car dealers are always anxious to have them in stock. There are times when they cannot be bought.
'This is largely due, of course, to the car's exceptional stamina. It has the reputation of giving good service over a long period of years. But it is also true that people know it will not be radically different tomorrow than it is today, and therefore they buy without fear of an abnormal overnight depreciation.
'And the man who buys a new Dodge Brothers car buys with the same assurance. He can drive it for years and still retain the pride of ownership that is so well known and so universal in the great Dodge Brothers family."
The reason that most cars wear out sooner than they should is usually due to improper lubrication.

come as a complete surprise to Mr. Riley, who is a prominent worker in the organization.
Throughout the afternoon and evening a special musical program greeted the visitors, who were shown the new quarters by members of the sales force of the organization, each guest receiving a souvenir of the occasion.
The Gazette takes this opportunity to extend its congratulations to Mr. Riley and his organization, wishing them many more years of prosperity.

"UNUSED MILEAGE"
CARS REAL VALUE
The Buick used car department of the Motor Sales Company has a very good collection of used automobiles. Their used cars are put into the very best condition in their efficient repair and service department, while those that need new paint are taken to Willets & Hochull's shop and given the best Duco finish obtainable.
These are a few of the reasons why he recommends his used cars, says Emmett McNeely, manager of the department, who adds that "unused mileage" is what the prospect is purchasing.
"All automobiles are used automobiles as soon as driven around the block," declares McNeely.
"A great depreciation is saved when you buy a good used automobile which can perform any service any automobile can."

Bill Goodrun, who was with the original company when the Buick agency was taken over, and George F. Howard are the two stockholders, each holding a like interest. M. E. Ward, who has long been connected with the company, will remain as secretary-treasurer.
It is the intention of the officers of this company to continue the same service to the automobile public and to offer for their approval a full line of Buick models. The only change is in the name of the company.
Members of the force are Frank Braddock, who has been with the firm for three years; George Weatherwax, northern Orange county salesman, who has been with the firm for two years, and William Gastle, who recently came to Anaheim from Canada and who is an old-time Buick man.

"When you buy an automobile all you get is unused mileage. Unused mileage in a good used automobile costs less. Why not save the difference?"
The members of the shop four are men who have been with the firm from two to three years and are skilled mechanics who have specialized in Buick work. They are Ellory Tremaine, foreman; Earl Webb, Ed Auer and Donald Waymire. Mr. Waymire is a new man on the force and is rated as an AI Bulck workman.
