ADVENTURES OF ANANIAS (Continued from Page 6) course all of the morning—I fired, thinking I might be lucky enough to hit him. Straightening out the barrel, I threw the gun over my shoulder and again began to follow the tracks. I had gone only a few feet, however, when something struck the gun from behind me with such force as to knock it from my hands and throw me flat on the earth. Arising to my feet, I looked for my assailant and could see no one or anything that could have hit me. But upon picking up the gun and examining it, to my surprise, I found that the bullet I had just fired from it had circled the mountain like a boomerang and struck the end of the rifle barrel with enough force to partially embed itself in the bore. Prying it out with my knife, I continued my way and, at a point about half way around the mountain, found the carcass of the deer. The bullet had struck him in the rump, passed clear through his body and, continuing its flight, stopped only when it had struck the gun. Since coming to California I had often heard of a forest of large trees that grew in this part of the state and now, being in no hurry to return to the ranch, decided to go and see them. This forest was situate about fifty miles from where I now was and at the northern end of the mountain range. The trees in the forest were said to be so large it took a person walking at an average pace of three miles an hour, five hours to walk around the bole of one tree. They were so tall, that in order to see the top of a tree one had to lie flat on his back, look up the trunk of a tree as far as the eyes would carry, mark merrily over the rapids below and to wind like a silver thread through the green and gold of wooded pasture lands, ever traveling on and one with the lure of the deep blue mother sea in its heart. This canyon, the guide told me, led to the summit of the mountain which we would have to cross before reaching the forest. Ever climbing higher and higher, we reached the summit about noon. Here the trail, instead of leading down a canyon on the opposite side of the mountain, led directly along its face, which here dropped abruptly for thousands of feet into the valley below. The trail now narrowed to a mere ribbon and, not being a mountaineer, I was loathe to go any farther, but on being told that it was safe enough and that there was no other way of reaching the forest, I overcame my fear and agreed to make the attempt. The guide taking the lead, we started and, after going about a mile, with the trail becoming narrower all the way, I again lost my courage. The trail now seemed to float in a blurred mist before my eyes and become as inaccessible to my feet as the clefts and gorges of the clouds. I became dizzy and, getting down on my hands and knees, began to crawl along, holding on to the grass and small brush as I went, wishing with all my heart that I was back where I had started from and yet afraid to make the attempt to turn around. The mountainside now rose hundreds of feet above me on one side and dropped sheer off for thousands of feet into the valley on the other. Stopping, I now gained a small degree of control over my badly shattered nerves and, like a lost soul wavering in the Valley of the Shadows, glanced over the edge of the trail and, looking down through the tops of the giant trees far below me, I imagined ORANGE COUNTY. This forest was situate about fifty miles from where I now was and at the northern end of the mountain range. The trees in the forest were said to be so large it took a person walking at an average pace of three miles an hour, five hours to walk around the bole of one tree. They were so tall, that in order to see the top of a tree one had to lie flat on his back, look up the trunk of a tree as far as the eyes would carry, mark the spot, then climb up and repeat the procedure. This had to be done at least three times on the average tree if you wished to see its top. It was said by scientists that these trees were so old and had grown such a size at the time of the great deluge, the first dove released from the ark by Father Noah rested on their branches before returning to tell the Old Man there was no land in sight. On arriving at the forest, I found my informant had not prevaricated as to the size of the trees and, on going a short distance into the woods, I heard workmen some distance ahead. Following the sound of their axes, I at last reached a small clearing where a shingle mill had been erected. I found several men working here, who said that after installing the mill they had felled one tree and for five years had been making shingles of it and were shipping them to San Pedro. I asked one of the workmen how far it was to the top of the tree they had felled, and on being told that he did not know, decided to find out for myself. After traveling for three weeks, always along the trunk of the same tree, I again heard the sound of workmen and, on coming up to them, found ten men who said they were making cord wood from the top of the tree for three years and were shipping it to Frisco. On expressing my astonishment at the wonders of this part of the Golden State, one of the men said I had seen only a small portion of the wonders of the state. Why, the man said, on the other side of this mountain, in a deep, dark valley, there is a large petrified forest where great trees that turned to solid stone centuries ago stand upright all over the floor of the valley. This forest, he said, was different from all other petrified forests inasmuch as every living thing that attempted to make its way across the valley immediately became petrified. The mountainside now rose hundreds of feet above me on one side and dropped sheer off for thousands of feet into the valley on the other. Stopping, I now galanced a small degree of control over my badly shattered nerves and, like a lost soul wavering in the Valley of the Shadows, glanced over the edge of the trail and, looking down through the tops of the giant trees far below me, I imagined I could see my own bruised and broken body lying in the rocks on the floor of the valley. Sick with fear, shaking as though with palsy, and with my teeth clicking like castanets, I closed my eyes and crowded close to the upper side of the trail. After resting awhile, I became more confident and started on. I had gone only a short way, however, when becoming more frightened than ever, I grasped blindly for a small bush and, losing my balance, fell backward with a wild shriek over the cliff. Twisting and turning over and over like a feather in a high wind, I went down and down, it seemed to me, for a million miles before I finally crashed through the tree tops, struck the floor of the valley head first, and awoke—to find that I had crawled on top of the headboard of my bed and, in attempting to crawl along its edge, had fallen off, striking my head on the floor. Some people may be able to hurl defiance in the face of nature by breaking the Eighteenth amendment and by eating a lobster salad for dinner without any bad results, but one who has reached the three score and ten mark in life should have better sense—so never again for me. One class of motorists struggles to get more miles to the gallon, but most of them merely struggle to get more miles. John R. Mott, general secretary of the National Council of the Y.M.C.A. in America, and one of the leading figures of the nation, is to spend that day in Pasadena, conducting a conference on "Religious Work for Men." Dr. Mott will be heard in two great addresses during the day, the first being a 9:30 o'clock in the morning, and the second during the afternoon. The intervening hours will be given over to conferences on various problems connected with the religious work program of the churches and the Y.M.C.A. A limited number of men from Orange county will be able to attend the meeting and hear Dr. Mott. Men who would like to attend are advised to communicate with their local "Y" secretary for reservations. Dr. Mott is recognized not only in America, but throughout the world as one of the greatest Christian leaders of the day. His visit to Southern California offers an opportunity for men who have never before met him to meet and hear him on this occasion. Santa Ana Y.M.C.A. announces its first annual "Gymnasium Circus" for Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 27. This date has been postponed on account of conflicting appointments, but it is believed that this is final. About 150 men and boys, women and girls will put on an exhibition of athletics and gymnastics, demonstrating what has been done in the gymnasium program during the winter. Many unusual and attractive stunts will be shown, including the antics of a squad of 20 clowns. There will be drills and games and fancy stunts in ground and lofty tumbling, on the high bar, on the parallels and other culture done by the Y.M.C.A. The Anaheim Y.M.C.A. announces that John H. Rudd of Des Moines, Iowa, has been called to succeed Warren Ashleigh as general secretary of the Anaheim association. Mr. Rudd is a man of wide experience in town and country Y.M.C.A. work. He has been for some years serving as state secretary for rural work in Iowa, and it is only on account of his desire to come to California that the Anaheim work has been able to secure him. He will be a strong addition to the "Y" forces in this county, as well as in Southern California. Mr. Rudd is expected to arrive so as to be ready to undertake his work by April 1. In the meantime, the Anaheim "Y" workers are busily at work raising their funds for the work of the current year and getting ready for an enlarged work. "Pioneer" clubs of the Santa Ana district will have their monthly round-up at the "Y" building on Saturday evening, March 14. A barbecue supper, with games, entertainment and instruction will make up the evening's program. Rather more than 100 boys are expected to attend. Fullerton Y.M.C.A. has been at work during the past week on a financial canvass to secure the funds needed for the present year's work. Under the leadership of Secretary A. J. Raitt, excellent work has been done in the Fullerton district, and the community has responded with good support.
