IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK March 6, 1875 We were favored on Thursday with a call from Rev. W. S. Neales, who has assumed charge of the Episcopal flock of Anaheim. Mr. Neales has but lately arrived from Canada and hopes by a residence in our genial clime to recover from the ravages made upon his constitution by the cold, bleak climate of his Canadian home. After a two years' residence in Anaheim and vicinity, Dr. J. Ellis, member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, has concluded to reside permanently in Anaheim and practice his profession. His card appears in another column. The projectors of the new hotel enterprise have not yet decided on the exact location for their building. They are, however, proceeding with the preliminary work of organization and some time next week the articles of incorporation will be filed. The name chosen is the Pacific Hotel and Building Association of Anaheim. Among the subscribers to the stock are Helman and George, Peter Richards, S. J. Davis, J. P. Zeyn, S. A. Sheffield, W. W. Hardlin, E. W. Champlin, D. J. Sorenson, J. Keller, Joseph Backs and Ferd Backs. Cemetery Association—The trustees hart and G. Morgan appointed as viewers. The petition of J. W. Clark and others for a road from Westminster to Anaheim depot was also granted, and L. Seebold, B. F. E. Kelogg and D. W. C. Cowan appointed as viewers. Born—March 2, to the wife of H. Boege, a son. Married—March 3, by Rev. J. M. Allis, Issac R. Williams to Catherine Hunter, both of Anaheim. Died—On Monday, March 1, 1875, of pneumonia, Dr. David Taylor. The deceased was born in Woodstown, N. J., July 4, 1810. Died—On March 3, youngest child of William M. McFadden, aged three weeks. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK March 8, 1900 Frank Ey and wife leave Santa Ana March 31 for Germany for an indefinite stay. It is 30 years since Frank came to the new world to seek his fortune, and he returns to visit the scenes of his youth after a successful business career in this section. He will visit his mother in the old homestead on the Rhine and will spend some time at the Paris Exposition and other places of interest. Mr. and Mrs. Ey sail from New York April Cemetery Association—The trustees held a meeting on last Saturday. The treasurer's report was read and ordered referred to the finance committee. The report of the sexton was laid over until next general meeting. F. A. Korn and A. Langenberger were appointed finance committee. It was ordered that the main street leading to the cemetery be plowed and that cypress trees be planted at the corner of each family lot on the main avenues in the cemetery. It was also ordered that popular trees be planted 12 feet apart around the cemetery on the outside. A committee consisting of Messrs. Korn, Kroeger and Lorenz were appointed to confer with the committee appointed by the I.O.O.F. lodge of Anaheim in regard to the purchase of four acres of land for the enlargement of the cemetery. One acre to be used by the I.O.O.F. as a burying place and one acre to be used for the same purpose by the Masonic fraternity. The committee will report at a special meeting to be held today. Gus Davis has handed us one of the daintest bits of ladies' head architecture that we have seen since the fashions changed last. He says he found it on the street, and being afraid to take it home, shirked the responsibility by giving it to us. It is a black hat, coquettishly looped up on the left side with one of the prettiest ornaments ever made in a tin shop. 'A row of jet black beads gives dignity to the rim and towering high above the crown, is a white ostrich feather, the size of which gives rise to the suspicion that it was plucked from the tail of a 9-year-old rooster. From a label pasted in the crown, we learn that the botanical name of the structure is "Marquise." Anyone who may be able to give a better or clearer description of the hat will be adjudged the owner of the same and can have it by filing claim at this office. Frank Ey and wife leave Santa Ana March 31 for Germany for an indefinite stay. It is 30 years since Frank came to the new world to seek his fortune, and he returns to visit the scenes of his youth after a successful business career in this section. He will visit his mother in the old homestead on the Rhine and will spend some time at the Paris Exposition and other places of interest. Mr. and Mrs. Ey sail from New York April 10 on the North German Lloyd steamer Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, and expect to reach the other side by the seventeenth. A jolly party of picnickers drove to Santiago canyon on Saturday in Hahn's tallyho. The party comprised Captain and Mrs. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. A. Williams, Miss Barnes and Peter Sullivan, all of Pittsburg, and Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Grimshaw, Rev. and Mrs. Stone, Mrs. L. E. Miller and Miss Edith Roberts. The party enjoyed the day to the fullest extent. Born—To Mr. and Mrs. Mark Mowry of San Francisco, on the twenty-fifth ultimo, a 10-pound boy. Mrs. Mowry will be remembered as Miss Wilmot Lawrence, formerly of Anaheim. F. J. Speidel, one of the leading citizens of Buena Park, was in town yesterday. Miss Phebe Jones left on Tuesday for Washington, D.C., where she goes to take a position in the census bureau. Mrs. John A. Park of Oakland, sister of Mrs. Neff, arrived on Sunday morning for a visit of several weeks. Samuel Kraemer drove in from Flacentia yesterday afternoon. Sam says if we get another shower or two this month like that of Sunday we will be all right. Father Griffith went on Tuesday to Laguna Beach with a parly of friends to be the guests for a few days of Joseph Yoch. While praying for rain at Santa Ana, during the services last Sunday, the blessed drops descended and soon a heavy downpour was in progress. The congregation considered this a propitious omen and Father Griffith was heartily congratulated upon the success attending his efforts. Charley Federman has been in Los Angeles during the week, indisposed with an attack of bronchitis. His establishment has been under the capable management of his two clerks, Louis Kroeger and Oscar Renner. Forty-three hundredths of an inch of rain fell on Sunday, bringing up the total for the season to 6.41 inches. Last season to date we had 3.39. The rain revived vegetation and has been of vast benefit to late sown grain and to hay. We ought to have some more rain this month. Robert Burdette will lecture here at the opera house on Thursday evening, March 29. Mr. Burdette departes shortly for the East, and this will probably be the only time our citizens will be able to hear this distinguished lecturer. Among Southern Californians who aspire to the honor of being delegates to the Republican national convention, the names of Governor Gage, Senator Bard, ex-Governor Markham, General E. P. Johnson, Judge J. W. McKinlay, J. E. Slaugon, Senator Bulla and J. R. ANAHIM GAZETTE Newberry of Los Angeles, James McFadden of Santa Ana and U.S. Grant of San Diego are mentioned. General Otis has announced that he is out of the running. Professor Merrill of Berkeley, after an inspection some days ago, accredited the high school in Latin. This must be gratifying to the patrons of the school and especially so to Miss Helen French, teacher of the Latin class. The high school contains 49 pupils, and a considerable increase is looked for next term. Senator Nutt of San Diego was in town one day last week. A force of carpenters are at work upon the new cannery building, 40x170 feet. With lean-toes and porches the building will be 208 feet in length. It will be ready for occupancy in time for the coming season. Wood and the county superintendents of each of the 38 counties of the state, have been allotted to serve with the American Legion posts of the state in promoting the annual essay contest of the ex-service men's organization. Superintendent Wood is to name a committee of three to pick the best essays from California school children to be entered in the national content companies! Yet their service is the most wonderful, the cheapest thing we have. Same way with the water companies, the railroad companies, the electric lighting companies, the street railway companies, the gas companies. We'll finally boycott all these, because they are so polite, well managed and work too cheap. Don't growl at the corporations; try to be as useful, polite and efficient as they are. The corporation men are the best we have. They actually make the progress we are so proud of; we in the herd really have little to do with it. This is not paid piffle in the interest of dangerous, dishonest men; it is God's honest truth. Find a howler, who amounts to as much, by any test, as the men they abuse, and I'll agree to become a Socialist. And hang myself. For I wouldn't care to live if I had to be a Socialist—E. W. RILEY. Asst. Secretary. Profit or Loss? THE difference between profit and loss on poultry can often be traced to the shelter provided for the flock. But there's a whole lot of careful work and planning necessary before an honest hen will cackle frequently. She's got to be fed right, and properly housed. She must be free from vermin, dry and protected from drafts when on the roost. Don't try to see how warm you can build a poultry house—a hen's body temperature averages 7 to 9 degrees higher than a horse or cow's, and feathers are a wonderful protection—but be sure it's dry and free from drafts, and has good ventilation.
