MEANING OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
February 10, 1925.
Editor, Anaheim Gazette,
Anaheim, Calif.
Dear Sir:—In a recent evangelist's campaign in Aanheim, the song book contained a questionnaire which shows a misapprehension of Christian Science, and I ask space in your columns to correct some of the wrong impressions.
One question implies that a minister of the gospel has a right to attack Christian Science and that it is not a religion. Webster's dictionary says that a religion is "conformity in faith and life to the precepts inculcated in the Bible, respecting conduct of life and duty toward God and man." That Christian Science conforms to this definition is evidenced by the first and last tenets of the Christian Science church, as given in the textbook, "Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "As adherents of truth, we take the inspired word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal life"; "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just and pure." Therefore, Christian Science has a perfect right to be called a religion, and should not be subject to attacks by ministers of the gospel.
Our Master, Christ Jesus, included healing of disease, as well as of sin, as a vital part of his religion and he commanded his followers to heal the sick. Marvelous physical healing was accomplished by his immediate disciples, and by Paul, who was not one of the twelve; and the Christians healed the sick for nearly 300 years.
inspired remarks about Lazarus' sleep, Jesus made a concession to their material point of view, and said: "Lazarus is dead." Then he proved that death is not real, by destroying its seeming reality and raising Lazarus from the dead.
Referring to one of the minister's questions: Mrs. Eddy did not encourage Christian Scientists to call her "Mother." In the manual of the mother church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., article XXII, section 1, Mrs. Eddy says: "In the year 1895, loyal Christian Scientists had given to the author of their textbook, the founder of Christian Science, the individual, endearing term of mother. At first Mrs. Eddy objected to being called thus, but afterward consented on the ground that this appellative in the church meant nothing more than a tender term such as sister or brother. In the year 1903 and after, owing to the public misunderstanding of this name, it is the duty of Christian Scientists to drop the word mother and to substitute leader, already used in our periodicals."
Satisfactory answers to all of the minister's questions may be obtained from the works of Mary Baker Eddy, which fully support the spiritual teaching of the Bible.
The Christian Scientist carefully guards his thoughts; he strives to remove, as fast as possible, materialistic thinking and to acquire the ideal taught by Christ Jesus. Without self-righteousness, he endeavors to help his brothers and sisters to lead better and happier lives, and to obey the law of the land.
Christian Science is doing a great good in the world, and it is proving that "God (Spirit) is our refuge and strength, a very present help who has stated that very satisfactory no "fills" on the The Orange Mission gave authority to allow the wharf for a pier R. Schaeffer while movie ship Jolly

In the year 1884 the United States took from the predecessor Andrew Johnson, by all presidents of the government officials with the Senate. This vided that federal pointees confirm should continue if successors were similarly confirmed vided that cabinet office during the ident who appoint one month there provision, it has been inserted to prevent from removing Stanton, whose reconstruction act approved and defended then known as the cans. It was the removal of Mr. S. of the provisions cited his impeachment was repealed by Its constitutionaliously doubted, Science Monitor.
Now, for the first repeal of the Tenure the right of a prescriptive official...
Our Master, Christ Jesus, included healing of disease, as well as of sin, as a vital part of his religion and he commanded his followers to heal the sick. Marvelous physical healing was accomplished by his immediate disciples, and by Paul, who was not one of the twelve; and the Christians healed the sick for nearly 300 years—or until Emperor Constantine made Christianity the state religion of the Romans. Then the popularity of the Christian religion lowered the conscription of its members, and love of material ease lessened their spirituality, so that Christ's fundamental teachings were overlooked.
Jesus said: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing" (John 6:63). The whole trend of his teachings is to turn mankind away from materiality and corporeality to God, to Spirit and spirituality. He obeyed and practiced God's commandment: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," before Spirit. His thinking was always on the mountain top of spirituality, but his bodily presence was in the valley of mortality enough to be the Wayshower for mankind.
The Bible abounds in symbolism and metaphors, which are used to turn the thought of mortals to a more exalted and spiritual attitude. For instance, the "arm of the Lord" points to the unlimited power of Spirit; and "on the right hand of the Majesty on high" refers to that same power, for the right hand is the strong one so commonly used by mankind; but these metaphors do not mean that God is a corporeal being, made in the likeness of mortals. Such a construction would attempt to reverse Jesus' Biblical statement that "God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).
Christ Jesus did not use mental suggestion to heal, and it is contrary to Christian Science to do so. He taught: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Physical healing in Christian Science is the liberation from bondage to sickness, and it results from knowledge of the truth about God and man; from an enlightened understanding that God is love (I John 4:8); that God is good (Matt. 19:17); that He is not an abstract being, but active almighty.
Christian Science is doing a great good in the world, and it is proving that "God (Spirit) is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Respectfully,
ALBERT E. LOMBARD,

ENGINEERS VISIT NEWPORT
Three well-known engineers of Southern California were recent visitors to Newport Beach—DeWitt L. Reaburn, location engineer for the Mulholland highway and formerly connected with the geological survey and the national park service; H. A. Butz, who has been association with harbor construction work in Spain, Canada and the United States and is now established in Los Angeles; Edward R. Bowen, who was designing engineer on the Los Angeles aqueduct. These three men are grouping a number of engineers, specialists along different lines, into one firm of consulting and contracting engineers. They are deeply interested in Newport Bay and made a trip over the entire project in company with H. A. Lake, chairman of the harbor commission.
Immensely surprised with the possibilities, especially on the great upper bay, Mr. Reaburn, speaking for the visitors, told the harbor commissioners at their last meeting that he and his associates would be very much interested in carrying out any development features which would probably be contained in the report and recommendation now being prepared by General Lansing H. Beach. Having been in charge of a number of important construction projects in Southern California, this group of engineers is in a position to undertake features such as the construction of jetties and repair of same, dredging contracts for entrance work, deepening or widening of the county channel and entrance and for removal of material for anchorage areas, erection of wharves, etc.
All three of the engineers were greatly surprised to see the large area then known as the canns. It was the pre-removal of Mr. S. of the provisions of capitated his impetuosity was repealed by Its constitutionality liously doubted, Science Monitor.
Now, for the first repeal of the Tenant right of a prescriptive official, the consent of the seriously questioned court of the land, western city, remains order before the term, claimed the case for service during time for which pointed. Beck, then viced that the revices of the Senate involved that this latter should be given a result, and upon motion, Senator H. vanilla will, in due course of the court's presentation.
The question interesting one, but it is that it is an extreme so far as it invokes threatened constitution. The right of the S. qualifications an appointee of this does not necessarily say, in the absence provision as that former Tenure of C service cannot be discretion of the unfitness or in politeee appears. This understanding of the truth destroys fear, removes superstition, heals disease and overcomes sin. Christ Jesus was the greatest practitioner of healing who lived on earth, and Christian Scientists are faithfully following in his footsteps, confident that they will grow to the full and complete proof of his prophecy: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do" (John 14:12).
The critic implies that sickness, sin and death are real. Webster's states that in the law, the real pertains to "things fixed, permanent or immovable." Jesus' healing, which destroys sin, sickness and death, proved positively that they are not real. Jesus said: "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep" (John 11:11). To the senses, Lazarus seemed dead, and he was as dead as any man can be, but Jesus refused to be influenced by the evidence of the senses, even though Lazarus "had lain in the grave four days already," because Jesus knew that his apparent death was only a dream of sense testimony. When the disciples misunderstood His
At the request of the Orange County Harbor Commission, District Attorney Nelson will investigate the conditions, terms and periods for which leases can be made for county-owned lands and frontage on Newport bay. The application from the Standard American Glass Company for frontage on the county channel has brought this matter to the front. The plans of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission are to endeavor to extend the present Los Angeles harbor lease limit of 30 years to 99 years. It is said that individuals cannot afford to lease for the short period and spend sufficient money to properly improve frontage. With extension of the time to 99 years the type of improvement could be better.
Reports that General Beach had recently spent the day at the entrance to Newport bay, checking up data for his report, were made by Secretary Welch of the harbor commission, and also that the survey of the county channel had been completed and the findings turned over to General Beach.

TENURE OF OFFICE ACT
In the year 1867 the Congress of the United States passed a law which took from the president at that time, Andrew Johnson, the power, exercised by all presidents since the formation of the government, to remove appointive officials without the consent of the Senate. This particular act provided that federal employees and appointees confirmed by the Senate should continue in office until their successors were duly appointed and similarly confirmed. It was also provided that cabinet officers should hold office during the term of the president who appointed them, and for one month thereafter. This latter provision, it has been explained, was inserted to prevent President Johnson from removing Secretary of War Stanton, whose enforcement of the reconstruction acts in the South was approved and defended by what were then known as the Radical Republicans. It was the president's attempted removal of Mr. Stanton in defiance of the provisions of this act that precipitated his impeachment. The law was repealed by Congress in 1887. Its constitutionality was always seriously doubted, says the Christian Science Monitor.
Now, for the first time since the repeal of the Tenure of Office act, the right of a president to remove an appointee official for cause without of Southern California at a dinner to be held at 6 o'clock. Thursday evening, February 19, at the club headquarters in Los Angeles.
"A frank discussion of the highway problem of this state will do much to clarify the situation," said President W. L. Valentine. "In area, taxable wealth and population the state is divided into two approximately equal sections, the northern district composed of 45 counties and the southern district of 13 counties. The mileage of the present state highway system, however, shows but 36.5 per cent of that mileage in Southern California, and of the $100,000,000 thus far spent on our state highway system, the south has received but 34 per cent.
"According to figures of the state highway engineering department, more than $214,000,000 would be required to complete the present state highway system and these estimates show that approximately $143,000,000 of this amount, or 66 per cent, is required in the north; also that demands have been made for the addition of approximately 3000 miles of new roads to be added to the state highway system, estimated to cost $117,000,000, of which 73.5 per cent lies in the northern counties.
"As even more inequitable distribution of state highway expenditures is found in the maintenance, reconstruction and widening work which is paid for directly by motor vehicle registration fees and the gas tax, as the records of the state highway department for the year 1923 show the expenditures in the 13 southern counties to approximate 24 per cent of the total, although the registration of automobiles shows that this section of the state pays 57 per cent of the taxation for this purpose."
ADJUSTABLE "PRINCIPLE"
Senator Walsh of Montana is suffering from a sense of outrage because a case which may involve his client, colleague and intimate friend, Senator Burton R. Wheeler, on account of oil land frauds alleged to have been committed in Washington, is being investigated by a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia, rather than in Senator Wheeler's home state of Montana. He strongly approved, however, the investigation of the similar Fall case by a grand jury in the District of Columbia rather than in Senator Fall's home state of New Mexico, where it is alleged the conspiracy with which he is alleged was hatched, and where the first investigation and exposure came, although in that case a Senate committee was defending and not white-washing the accused.
Senator Walsh approved the grand jury hearing in the District of Columbia so heartily that he even made a radio speech attacking the defendants while the grand jury was considering the matter, so that even the members of the grand jury could be in no doubt as to his wishes in the matter.
The "great principle of justice" which is engaging the thought of Senator Wheeler's constitutional lawyers in the Senate seems to be of an adjustable character. It covers the clients and colleagues of senators, but it will not fit the case of a man who is no longer in the Senate and has engaged his legal staff on the outside of that body. The purpose of periodical Senate speeches by Senator Wheeler's attorneys in that body, while the grand jury is considering the Campbell-Wheeler case, is of course clear to everybody.
then known as the Radical Republicans. It was the president's attempted removal of Mr. Stanton in defiance of the provisions of this act that precipitated his impeachment. The law was repealed by Congress in 1887. Its constitutionality was always seriously doubted, says the Christian Science Monitor.
Now, for the first time since the repeal of the Tenure of Office act, the right of a president to remove an appointive official for cause, without the consent of the Senate, is being seriously questioned in the highest court of the land. A postmaster in a western city, removed by executive order before the completion of his term, claimed the right to collect pay for service during the entire period of time for which he had been appointed. The issue raised is as to whether an official tenure fixed by the president and approved by the Senate can be terminated at the discretion of the executive without the consent of the confirming authority. The point involved seemed so lacking in confusing technicality that the first hearing before the Supreme Court was virtually an ex-parte proceeding, the brief of the contending party simply stating the period of his appointment and other facts germane to the issue. But it appears that even upon the presentation of the solicitor-general, James M. Beck, the court became convinced that the rights and prerogatives of the Senate were so deeply involved that this branch of the legislature should be given a hearing. As a result, and upon the court's own motion, Senator Pepper of Pennsylvania will, in due time, appear as a friend of the court to make the proper presentation.
The question involved is an interesting one, but it is difficult to believe that it is an extremely important one, so far as it involves a supposedly threatened constitution prerogative. The right of the Senate to pass upon the qualifications or acceptability of an appointee of the chief executive does not necessarily entail the right to say, in the absence of some such provision as that contained in the former Tenure of Office act, that such service cannot be dispensed with, in the discretion of the president, when the unfitness or incapacity of the appointee appears. It is easy to understand how a hostile Senate, in the exercise of such alleged power, might compel the president to continue in office those notoriously unqualified,
President Valentine further declared that the Automobile Club of Southern California has been one of the principal factors in good roads development in the state, and that it is in intimate touch with the highway situation. The purpose of this meeting is to put the facts clearly and concisely before a gathering, representative of every section of Southern California, in an effort to unite this section of the state in its fight for a just and equitable share in all highway development before consideration shall be given to the amount of expenditure and the means to be used in further state highway financing.
Nobody is quite so indignant when a child "goes wrong" as a parent who once went wrong and has forgotten about it.
