IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper FIFTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK February 20, 1875 Father Sanchez, who has been visiting in San Juan Capistrano, will hold services in the Catholic church here tomorrow. Peter Richards has just received a large stock of the famous St. Louis bock beer, for sale by the glass or bottle. Our Churches—Besides the new church which is soon to be built by the Episcopalians, a movement has been inaugurated to obtain a building lot and funds to be applied to the erection of a church by the Methodists. And, encouraged by the success of the Protestant church members, the Catholics are bestirring themselves with a view of building for their congregation a more comfortable and elegant house of worship. It is understood that Rev. Father Sanchez will present the matter before his people tomorrow for their consideration, and a subscription paper will be put in circulation. Several prominent Catholics have promised to aid the enterprise, and we have no doubt that they will be successful in removing the unsightly edifice which now encumbers the lot donated to them for church purposes and erect in its stead a substantial and commodious building. We are also informed that News in Brief—Col. Norman C. Jones has sold his property known as Inverness to A. Welll for $30,000 and has purchased the uhsold portion of the Rancho Azusa del Duarte, comprising 4,867 acres. The Los Angeles & Independence Railroad Company has closed a contract with parties to grade the bed of the road from Truxton to within four miles of Los Angeles. The citizens of Wilmington have purchased the hook and ladder truck formerly used in Los Angeles. The latter place is now supplied with a Babcock truck and extinguishers. At a recent meeting of the Academy of Science in San Francisco, Mr. Sterns, the chairman, said that it is an error to suppose that the eucalyptus is not good for fuel and that it gives off a disagreeable odor. The steamer Arizona from Panama brought 45 sisters of Charity, expelled from Colima and Guadalajara. A brother of Phil Sheridan is being tried for obtaining money under false pretenses. Nearly 1000 families of Mennonites are expected soon to arrive in Canada from Russia. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK February 22, 1900 Miss Alice Carver left on Saturday for San Francisco, to lay in a stock of spring styles in millinery. Miss Ellen M The last Sunday runaway was attended with more disastrous consequences than any of the previous mishaps. A. G. Beebe was thrown violently out of a buggy in front of Calisher & Company's store and sustained a compound fracture of his left leg. Dr. Ellis is in attendance, and we hope that by skillful treatment Mr. Beebe will soon be restored to his wonted health and vigor. Several gentlemen connected with the order of the Knights of Pythias are discussing the feasibility of establishing a lodge in Anaheim. We think it is practicable. E. N. Arnold is settling up his business, preparatory to leaving for Panamint. Congressman Beck fell on an ice sidewalk in Washington, on Thursday, and broke his left arm. On the same day a four-horse wagon, loaded with a Santa Ana pumpkin, stalled in the dust in front of our office. The climatic extremes in our common country are wonderful. The shipments from the depot on Thursday were as follows: 460 sacks of barley, 80 sacks potatoes, 50 sacks beans, 8 cases eggs and 4 casks of wine (for New York). There are now 220 sacks of barley and corn awaiting shipment. The entertainment given by the O. O. O. on the 12th inst. was a complete success, writes our correspondent from Orange. The number present was about 400 and the proceeds amount to upwards of $75. Thanks are extended to the people of Anaheim, Santa Ana and other places who kindly favored us with their presence. Services were held in the new church Nearby money under these precepts. Nearly 1000 families of Mennonites are expected soon to arrive in Canada from Russia. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK February 22, 1900 Miss Alice Carver left on Saturday for San Francisco, to lay in a stock of spring styles in millinery. She will be absent three weeks and intends bringing with her one of the finest stocks of millinery ever brought to the city. Joe Backs came down from Los Angeles with the Turners on Saturday evening to visit with his folks and attend the Turner entertainment. J. B. Neff is in San Francisco on business and will be absent until the latter part of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Melrose and their daughters, Misses Jessie and Winifred, spent Saturday and Sunday visiting with friends in Los Angeles and Pasadena. Rev. Father Conneally of Riverside was in town several days this week, the guest of Rev. Fathers Dubble and Griffith. He returned yesterday afternoon to Los Angeles. Mrs. Grace Hasty of Ashland, Ore., who has been visiting with relatives and friends in Los Angeles and Anaheim for the past four months, leaves Sunday for Los Angeles and a few days later for her home in the north. Mrs. Steley and Theodore Meyer entertained during the week friends from Los Angeles, among them Messrs Christopher and Levy, the well-known caterers. Mr. Dickel was in Los Angeles on Thursday and, in an interview with General Last, was assured that the application for the formation of a military company here would be acted upon favorably and that within two weeks from that time the company would, in all probability, be in readiness to be accepted into the regiment. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Backs celebrated their silver wedding at their home last evening. The worthy couple were married in Anaheim, 25 years ago, and have since resided here, highly esteemed by all who know The entertainment given by the O. Thanks are extended to the people of Anaheim, Santa Ana and other places who kindly favored us with their presence. Services were held in the new church on Sunday. Rev. M. M. Bovard preached. The church is not finished. After the service $500 was raised by voluntary subscriptions for completing the church and purchasing a bell. Westminster Items—The marriage of Miss Edwards and James Booth, Esq., was the occasion of a very pleasant reunion of the friends of the young couple. One of the largest wells in California has been completed on the farm of Edwards Brothers. It is 62 feet deep and throws a stream of water 19 inches over the top of a 7-inch pipe. In one of his popular Sunday evening sermons, some weeks ago, Rev. Mr. Allis took occasion to utter some words of warning about the folly and danger of giving way to sudden gusts of anger. If Charlie Hanna had gone to church that evening and heard the very eloquent discourse, it is probable that he would still have been the possessor of a horse. His favorite pony became unruly on Thursday morning and in the heat of passion, Charlie thrust at him with a pitchfork. The prongs of the fork entered the horse deeper than was intended and in a few minutes it was dead. Over 1000 boxes of oranges were shipped from Los Angeles to San Francisco by the Mohongo. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Backs celebrated their silver wedding at their home last evening. The worthy couple were married in Anaheim, 25 years ago, and have since resided here, highly esteemed by all who know them. A party of neighbors and friends gathered at their residence to convey to them the felicitations of the season. Billy Berdrow is of the firm conviction that one of the infallible signs of a cessation of the rainfall (when any rain falls during the winter) may be noted in the flight of geese toward the north. He has noticed of late that these fowl have been winging their flight; many hundreds of feet over head, in that direction and is of the opinion that we are not to have another dog-goned drop of rain this season. Hope you're wrong, Billy. Miss Dora Zeyn and Mrs. C. E. Holcomb entertained on St. Valentine's day at the residence of their father, J. P. Zeyn. The house was profusely decorated with "hearts," ferns and smylax. Progressive hearts, as being most appropriate to the day, was the game of the afternoon. The first prize, a jardiniere and fern, was won by Mrs. McKinley, the second, a red heart-shaped pin cushion, by Miss Jessie Melrose, and the consolation by Mrs. Konig. At the close of the game delicious refreshments were served by the young hostesses, who are proverbial for their hospitality.
