BIG INDUSTRIAL PLANT LOCATED IN CITY ZINC PIGMENTS COMPANY WILL OPERATE IN OLD DREYFUS WINERY BUILDING Experimental Work Carried on for Weeks Before Managers Decided to Locate Here—Ore From the Blue Light Mines in Silverado Canyon to Be Used in the Manufacture of White Lead and Other Materials—Has a Capital of $350,000. Following experimental work that has been in progress at the John Cook building, formerly occupied by the Randolph Packing Company, it is now announced by George W. Reid, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, that a big manufacturing plant has decided to locate in this city. The company will be known as "The Zinc Pigments Company," and its principal products will be paint materials. The raw materials will come from the Blue Light mines in Silverado Canyon, an Anaheim concern, which it is believed, will be amply able to supply sufficient ore. The company will manufacture zinc oxide, lead carbonate, lithopone, zinc yellow, zinc resinate, zinc chloride, sodium sulphate anhydrous and bringing to Anaheim a real industry, one that will be developed in such a way that Anaheim will feel proud of it. REFUTE "FRAME UP" CHARGE Anaheim, Calif., Feb. 3, 1925. In order that the members of the U.S.A. Club who have not been intimately connected with the affairs of that organization may be fully assured as to the charges so freely made in the Plain Dealer about a "frame up" on Mr. Metcalf and others, we have been charged with planning the "frame up" make the following statement: There never was any attempt or desire to "frame" on any persons whomsoever. To any person who has watched the campaign closely, it should be apparent that the stories of the alleged "frame up" were simply methods used by the Klan and its supporters to get what they considered attractive campaign matter. In fact, it can be classed as a part and on the par with the attempt made to injure Mr. L.E. Miller's candidacy by the publication of alleged statements which were never made by Mr. Miller. The fact that a part of the alleged "frame up" was withheld until the last evening of the campaign, or until it was too late to be refuted before the election, should be sufficient proof of the untruthfulness of the charges. It will also produce gold and silver, of which there is nearly always some present in zinc ores. The zinc oxide which has been turned out in the experimental work is equal, if not superior, to the celebrated white lead made in New Jersey. The 25-ton plant which the company will establish here will supply 7 per cent of the Pacific Coast demand at the beginning of its operations. Zinc oxide is the base of all paints, and is also one of the essential materials used in the making of automobile tires. It increases the life of rubber, and is used as a filler in other rubber goods. It is a staple article of commerce, and the Anaheim company will have the entire Pacific Coast as a market. Sixteen thousand tons are used on the coast each year, and all of it is now shipped in from eastern states. A 10-ton experimental plant has been in operation here with three shifts working 24 hours daily. The processes have been proven to be highly successful on a practical scale, producing the highest grade products. There is no guess work about the quality of the product which will be turned out, and there is no question about a ready market for all it can produce. Everything has been carefully calculated, and prosperity for the company assured before it decided to locate here. The old Dreyfus winery building, in the southwest corner of town, will be a beehive of industry within a short time. The big brick structure is being fitted up to meet the demands of the business. The company has a capital of $360,000, but it is not stated how many men will be employed at the start. The success of the company is assured, because it will manufacture a product for which there is always a demand. NEW ANAHEIM INDUSTRY The Chamber of Commerce is evening of the campaign, or until it was too late to be refuted before the election, should be sufficient proof of the untruthfulness of the charges. ERNEST T. GANAHL B. H. SIDNAM ROBERT O. WHITE. OIL DEVELOPMENT IN ORANGE COUNTY Leasing by the Irvine company of two sections of land near the Paularino school house to the Penn Products Company, with stipulation that oil drilling be started within a very short time, and the activity of the Shell Oil Company and the Standard Oil Company in the Greenville and Paularino districts last week had increased interest in the prospective development of oil immediately south of Santa Ana. C. A. Johnson of Huntington Beach, manager of the Orange county interests of the Holly Sugar Corporation, denied the truth of rumors in circulation to the effect that his company had leased to an oil company its properties just south of the city limits of Santa Ana. Rumor also had it that the company had signed with the Standard Oil Company and that the first drilling in the prospective field would be on property of the sugar company. According to an unconfirmed report, the Shell Oil Company has entered the Paularino district by securing leases on 90 acres belonging to W. J. Jamison and his son-in-law, the former having 80 acres and the latter 10. The owners are said to have received $10,000 cash rental in advance for a three years' lease. It also was disclosed by A. V. Napier, realtor, that the Standard Oil Company had extended its leasing operations to Paularino, and that it had secured a lease on 212 acres of the 412-acre tract known as the Stephens property and now in the possession of W. D. Whittler of Los Angeles. The tract lies on the north side of the Newport Beach boulevard and almost March 2 to 7 as Seed Corn Tent and numerous oats being planted upon corn farm careful seed selection 1925 crop servance is also the week, the coe National Service cage, under the Roebuck Agricultural Prizes totaling the corn farmer tries to the show reaching here dition to the $50 to the farmer in the best ear of offered to the United States' chamble of $1,000 to the farm bureau, agit organization ing the largest announced. The show is NEW ANAHEIM INDUSTRY The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Zinc Pigments Company of Los Angeles has determined to come to Anaheim for a location. The prime mover of this company is Ernest Harms, for many years one of the most prominent metallurgical and mining engineers of Mexico and for the past 20 years in charge of the large smelting works at Torreon, Mexico. The process was developed and successfully operated on a large scale in Los Angeles by John Allisghan and is covered by five patents. Mr. Allisghan, associated with Mr. Harms in this work, has had many years of experience in hydro-metalurgy and is a chemist of widely known ability and standing. At the present time they are located at John Cook's warehouse, at the foot of South West street, on the Southern Pacific switch. Temporary offices are at the Hotel Valenela. The demonstration plant is now in operation. This plant, which is incorporated for $350,000, will begin in a modest way with a 20-ton plant, which means about 20,000 tons of freight per year. The plant will develop into a 50-ton plant, which will mean about 50,000 tons of freight a year. The present location will very likely be made permanent. The Chamber of Commerce, working through Messrs. Eygabroad, Dwyer and Yungbluth, have succeeded in industry, such a broad of it. 3. 1925. It is understood the Sandard paid cash in advance for a three years' lease at the rate of $2.50 an acre per month. By leasing the Whittier tract, the Standard has enlarged its operations to territory between the Southern Pacific line to Newport Beach north to Edinger street and between the Irvine ranch on the east and Greenville road on the west. In the past few days, the Standard has increased by many acres its leasing holdings in the Greenville district. Among those who have recently signed are D. A. Bear, 58 acres; Alfred Manderscheid, 90; Sam Weber, 20; Selvidge Brothers, 50; Antone and Frank Borchard, 266; F. D. Plavan, 112; S. H. Manderscheid, 54, and George Manderscheid, 40. WHITTED IS SUED Miss Opal Owens of Santa Ana whose testimony was the cause of Dr. R. E. Whitted, former Santa Ana dentist, being sentenced to San Quentin on a statutory charge, has filed suit in the Superior Court for $101,000 damages against the reputed wealthy doctor as a result of the asserted Release of Dr. Whitted from prison on parole after he had served six months, caused the grand jury to investigate an asserted outburst of Bert Dawson, Ku Klux Klan leader, to the effect that the Klan brought pressure on District Attorney A. BUDGET FOR HARBOR To carry out the recommendations of the budget committee of the Orange County Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Dr. C. G. Huston, the president, has appointed a special joint committee on finance and membership, and the same committee will review the budget for 1924 and fix the estimated expense for 1925. This committee is divided into three sections with three members from each division. The chairman of the committee at Balboa is J. P. Greeley and the other members from Balboa are: Charles Way Benjamin Funcheon. At Newport Beach the chairman is George Wilson, with J. A. Porter and Dr. Richter as the other members. J. L. Alnsworth is chairman for Costa Mesa and his aides are D. J. Dodge and Roy Davis. Dr. Huston plans to call the committee to meet at an early date, when the 1925 program will be gone over in detail and the work and funds aranged for. This year promises to be the most important one in the history of the organization, according to Harry Welch, secretary of the Orange County Harbor Chamber of Commerce. General Beach's report to the harbor commission may be expected in the near future and increased activity all along the line may be expected immediately the report is made public. The opening of the paved road along the coast line will also open up another new era of activity, according to the same authority. This is A CARELESS MOVE—and you have an ink spot. P. Nelson before the dentist was prosecuted. The jury absolved Nelson. Since the asserted acts charged in Miss Owens' suit were committed, she has become of age, the action shows. Suit is filed through Attorney Augustus Tilden of Los Angeles. Humiliation, shame and anguish which Miss Owens declares she has suffered, resulted in her physical breakdown and she was compelled to drop her studies, she avers. A $1,000 medical bill and damages of $100,000 are asked. Prizes totaling $2,290 are offered to the corn farmers of the state for entries to the show, according to word reaching here from Chicago. UNION PACIFIC OWNERS The Union Pacific system of railroads has 51,224 stockholders, according to a statement issued today by C. R. Gray, president. Approximately 43 per cent of the stockholders are women and most of the stockholders are persons of moderate means, says Mr. Gray. The average holding, according to the statement, is 63 shares of a par value of $100 each. No one person, firm, corporation or institution owns as much as 2 per cent of the capital stock, the statement adds. Stockholders reside in every state in the Union and in Alaska, Canal Zone, Guam, Hawaii and Philippine Islands. "Thus," says Mr. Gray, "Union Pacific stock, like a country's trade, follows the flag. This widespread distribution conclusively answers the statement that the railroads are owned by a few persons. To an extent not generally recognized, the railroads are owned by the public. This subject comes home to every household when it is considered that life insurance policy holders and savings bank depositors are partners in the operation and development of our railways." The 1924 Ventura county fair returned a profit of $1,410.
