NOT DISCREET, PERHAPS,
BUT DECIDEDLY PATRIOTIC
Democratic campaign managers are in a panic because Mrs. Clem Shaver, wife of the Democratic national chair man, wrote a letter in which she declared the attitude of Charles W. Bryan, Democratic vice presidential nominee, on National Defense Day was an affront to every red blooded American. The letter is a bit embarrassing, especially in view of the commendation of Governor Bryan's position but the but the Democratic high command is in doubt as to what ought to be done about it.
Perhaps the only difference between Mrs. Shaver and her husband, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee is that the frank and spirited lady is not bound to keep her real views, especially in all matters so closely bound up with patriotism, in cold storage during the campaign. The publicity given the letter represents a breach of confidence, and will not lessen the respect in which Mrs. Shaver is held by those who have read the letter and noted the flutter it has caused in the Democratic National Headquarters.
After the close of the World War and moving has been assigned to the Automobile Club of Southern California. Chiefs of traffic in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and other towns are co-operating, and in spite of the enormous number of motor vehicles, it is hoped to handle the vast crowd without a hitch.
In order to facilitate traffic, the touring bureau of the auto club advises that motorists unfamiliar with the most advantageous routes for them to consult the nearest branch of the club for directions.
THE DEFENCE TEST
"American patriotism is not dead despite the babblings of pacifists, internationalists and revolutionists," said Major General Charles G. Morton, commanding the Ninth Corps Area, when shown progress reports of the Defense test work in the Ninth Corps Area. Reports of progress of the Defense Test in various cities in the Ninth Corps Area received all the support that its most ardent proponents could desire.
"The Defense Test has accomplished two important things," said General Morton. "First, the demonstration has made plain that when the common defense is placed before the American people as an issue, they are ready to meet it fairly and squarely and are ready to assume the responsibility of a free and democratic government in defense of their institutions and government.
"American patriotism is not dead despite the babblings of pacifists, internationalists and red revolutionists. The defense test is an unequivocal answer to those who would barter or give away the American peoples' heritage of liberty. It has made plain to those sincere but misguided pacifists that all their worries and fears that..."
mitttee is that the frank and spirited lady is not bound to keep her real views, especially in all matters so closely bound up with patriotism, in cold storage during the campaign. The publicity given the letter represents a breach of confidence, and will not lessen the respect in which Mrs. Shaver is held by those who have read the letter and noted the flutter it has caused in the Democratic National Headquarters.
After the close of the World War President Wilson and Secretary Baker seriously proposed to Congress a standing army of a half a million men and President Wilson declared in favor of building the biggest navy in the world. The national defense act, under which the so-called "mobilization" of National Defense day was held is the creation of a Democratic Congress. Perhaps Mrs. Shaver finds it difficult to keep up with the lightning changes of Democratic leadership, albeit she is a woman, and it is often alleged that the feminine mind is a bit changeable.
There was no good excuse for the attempt to play politics with this purely patriotic question of National Defense day. Governor Bryan "pulled a boner," and the wife of the Democratic chairman has some of her husbands political perspicacity without being under the same obligation to keep her private views under the control of campaign exigencies. The lady merely said what most other Davis Democrats thought, and had the misfortune to have her opinions put into print by someone who ought to have known better than to publish private correspondence. Evidently Mrs. Shaver would have made a Democratic vice presidential candidate with some of the Dawes qualities that have made such a hit with the public.
"TESS' HAS CAST OF STELLAR MERIT
New Metro-Goldwyn Special Boasts Sextet of Big Players
It is no vain boast when Marshal Nellan claims to have selected one of the most auspicious casts ever gathered together in one photoplay for his production of "Tess of the D'Ubervilles," the Metro-Goldwyn picture to be shown at the California theater on Friday and Saturday.
All 1 of the players are extremely well known and their ability has been proven countless times.
"The second great accomplishment of the Defense Test has been to illustrate to every community in which a National Guard or Reserve unit is located the necessity of co-operation of all in order to provide for the needs of its own citizens who might be called to the colors in time of emergency. Although it is too early to state to what extent the Defense Test has exposed incompetence or defects to our plans. I am confident that when careful check is made many hitherto undiscovered defects will be revealed. The disclosure of such defects as may exist at present in our plans for defense will enable us to correct them now so as to avoid confusion and delay and the cost in American lives and treasure which would be inevitable if we had to wait until an emergency to make such corrections.
"The citizens of the Ninth Corps Area have responded nobly to this peace time call of their country and on behalf of the Army of the United States I wish to express my thanks for the wonderful display of patriotism and co-operation which has been made today by our citizens."
LA FOLLETTE A SOCIALIST
From all sections of the country and are ready to assume the responsibility of a free and democratic government in defense of their institutions and government.
"American patriotism is not dead despite the babblings of pacifists, internationalists and red revolutionists. The defense test is an unequivocal answer to those who would barter or give away the American peoples' heritage of liberty. It has made plain to those sincere but misguided pacifists that all their worries and fears that the defense Test would rouse a militaristic spirit were unfounded and has proven them to be false prophets. It has made plain to those internationalists and red revolutionists who would give away our nation's rights or who would tear down our democratic institutions that America is not a fertile field for such doctrines and that the American people are in no mood to longer tolerate the activities of those who preach them.
"Although the probability of war is very remote, the American people have today demonstrated in no uncertain terms their readiness to defend the government and institutions of our country.

Blanche Sweet and Conrad Nagel play the leading roles of the filmed Thomas Hardy novel. Stuart Holmes, one of the most convincing villains on the screen, plays an important part: George Fawcett, judged by by many to be the best character actor working before the camera, Courtenay Foote, Joseph J. Dowling, who is remembered vividly for his marvelous performance in "The Miracle Man" Victory Bateman, Jane Mercer and others portray the familiar Hardy characters to perfection.
"Tess of the D'Ubervilles" is a Louis B. Mayer presentation, and was adapted by Dorothy Farnum.
TO WELCOME FLYERS
All of Southern California will participate in the welcome home planned for the round the world flyers, who are scheduled to arrive at Clover field Santa Monica Saturday. In addition to inaugurating a new epoch in aerial navigation, these valiant young representative Americans are literally coming home when they reach Southern California, as their families live in this section.
The largest number of automobiles ever assembled in one locality on earth is expected to greet these Magellans of the air. The huge task of marking the highways and parking places and keeping the traffic order-

LA FOLLETTE A SOCIALIST
From all sections of the country there is growing evidence of the identity of the La Follette movement with Socialism, according to a statement given out yesterday by Percy W. Long, an executive of the Coolidge-Dawes Republican League of California. Long bases his statement on data assembled by the leagues' research department.
"Morris Hillquit, La Follette's campaign manager in New York, has been one of the heads of the Socialist party for years and is the author of a number of books on Socialism." Long declared. "In the Dakotas Lynn J. Frazler, head of the La Follette campaign there, was governor of North Dakota under the disastrous regime of the Non-Partisan League. In California one of the outstanding figures is Professor Guido H. Marx who has frequently gone on record in favor of the communist form of government.
"In Milwaukee Victor Berger, Socialist congressman, has declared: 'La Follette is a socialist in everything but name. He has been so for twenty years. He hasn't voted the Republican ticket since 1904. There is no reason why he can't be considered our candidate."
In Idaho the La Follette campaign has lost its leader in the person of Frank B. Johnesse, who has agandoned the project following his discovery of the La Follette Non Partisan League identity. "Experience has proven
what the Non-Partisan League is", he is quoted as saying. "God save the White House if La Follette is elected."
Coolidge-Dawes leaders in California declare that in the face of such constantly increasing proof of the radical character of the La Follette movement that Californians will be depended on to remain loyal to staunch republicans as represented by the Coolidge standard.
"California has always been one of the nation's bulwarks in the matter of Americanism and government along the lines defined by the Constitution," said Long. "This was first recorded at the time of the Civil War, the first great test to which our instrument of government was submitted and in every call since upon our patriotism. The La Follette movement with its radical ramifications and its affiliation with the Non-Partisans will get little support or comfort from thoughtful Californians."

NEW MEXICO FOR COOLIDGE
New Mexico can be counted safely in the Republican column for national Congressional and state candidates but that isn't going to prevent us from working our hardest to get out every possible Republican vote.
This apraisal of the situation was made today by Praeger Miller, Republican State Committeeman there, when he visted National headquarters.
"Bankers, business men, investors, taxpayers, and farmers in my state," said Mr. Miller "have hardly regained their equilibrium since the disastrous deflation of the last administration. They have not forgotten the Wilson vetoes of the emergency tariff bill and the bill to revive the War Finance Corporation in 1920.
"Had these measures been speedily enacted when the emergency of 1920 arose thousands of farmers and bankers throughout the west would have been saved from financial disaster. But the bills were rejected and the financial disaster came in the liquidation that followed in the wake.
"The liquidation of the farms and ranches of the west destroyed the collateral of the banks and brought unprecedented poverty and suffering on the people. Since the Republican administration came into power in 1921 prices on all products of New Mexico have been gradually increasing. Businessmen and farmers throughout the state in many instances regardless of party affiliation, feel that the country will be safely and sanely managed by Coolidge and Dawes. To replace President Coolidge with either of the other presidential candidates would be the most colossal blunder ever made by the producers of the nation. Things

Santa Ana, California
32nd Fall Opening September 15, 1924
Attend a school that is well established, that owns its own building, that enjoys the confidence of the public—a school that will be here to help you after you graduate and are ready for employment. You take no chances if you choose the Orange County Business College; our thirty-two years of successful operation in this field should convince you that you are secure under our guidance. Several business schools have been started in Orange county since we organized in 1892—the McDaniels' Business College, The Day School of Sherthand, Barrow's Business College and others. But where are they today? None lasted long enough to graduate the first class. You know what it means to begin in one school and have to finish in another—more time, more expense, more books to buy, new teachers with new methods—all to your detriment. You have tried that in the public school. The best is always cheapest. Then choose our Secretarial course, our bookkeeping Posting Machine Course, our actual Business Banking Course or our strong Course in Business Administration and Finance. It costs no more to attend this school than to attend a school of unproved merit.
SPECIAL OFFER FOR SEPTEMBER
The first ten persons residing in North Orange County who present this add in our college office before October 1, 1924, will be enrolled and trained in the course of their choice without the payment of a dollar for tuition until they have earned it after graduating. We guarantee to train you and to place you in a position. And then wait for our money until you earn it in the position we secure for you. Is there anything fairer than this? Ask other schools you investigate if they will make you the same offer. We appreciate your patronage and want to be of service to you. Try to be one of the ten.
J. W. McCormac, President.
