MAKE AN END OF LONG WINDED PLATFORMS
The National Republican is in full sympathy with the suggestion that the next Republican national platform should be a brief statement of principles and policies, rather than a blanket catch-all for all sorts of suggestions put forward as a bait for the votes of groups, cliques and localities.
This is a representative republic in which the details of legislation should be left to those elected by the people for that purpose. It is for political parties to declare the fundamental basis for such legislation. To make a platform as a fisherman balts a trout line, with all sorts or hooks for all sorts of fish, is a procedure out of harmony with the real purpose of political parties and with the nature of American government.
Frequently a political party wakes up to the fact that some plank has been pushed into a national platform by some well organized group, although the matter is one upon which there is no formulated party opinion and no real consideration has been given to the proposal in advance. People with pet schemes not fundamental in their character should be requested to take their troubles to Congress rather than force something into a party platform on the ground that it will make an appeal to a certain number of voters.
The Republican party would be better off in the next campaign with a thousand-word platform statement of general principles and policies than with a 5,000-word prospectus which seeks to cover everything in sight. The first Republican national platform was, as Lincoln said of his first platform as a legislative candidate in and Huntington Beach has been considered as one of the most direct interest.
Discussing the possible date at which Brawley may start work on his contract, McBride said the contractor probably would have the usual ten or fifteen days for signing aid that work should start within fifteen days after signing of the contract.
He said, however, that it is possible the contractor has his plans all made and that he may start even within fifteen days. It was pointed out by McBride that Brawley has known for at least ten days that he was the low bidder.
The bridge to span the river will be of concrete and will have three 60-foot spans, McBride said. The cost will run between $60,000 and $70,000 according to his estimates. The structure will cross the river at the point where the bridge of the Pacific Electric railway company crosses, and will be built adjoining the railway right of way. The paved roadway will be twenty feet wide and the bridge four feet wider.
Brawley's contract is for building a grade 8.2 miles in length and paving 3.5 miles of that distance with concrete six inches thick. The paved portion will extend from Huntington Beach to the Newport boulevard, the junction point being just north of the bridge crossing the river on the Newport Beach boulevard.
From this point to the Balboa Palisades the road will be graded and then surfaced with clay. Engineers maintain that this will provide an excellent roadbed. This section will be paved when funds become available.
On this section, the county also will have to build a bridge across the channel of Newport bay running to
COLONEL BRYAN DIGS
UP A CANDIDATE
Col. Wm. J. Bryan evidently aspires to fame as an excavator equal to that of the explorers who disinterred King Tut and mined Saurian eggs on the Gobi desert. He has dug up a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in the person of the president of the University of Florida.
One would think Colonel Bryan's enthusiasm for college professors as Presidents might have cooled down by this time but the Colonel's record proves that he is a glutton for punishment.
Colonel Bryan asures us that his candidate for President is "progressive." Presumably this means that he views with alarm the theory of evolution.
The Colonel's deep delving for a Democratic presidential candidate at least indicates that he thinks it is better to name a standard bearer who is unknown than one who has a record. Except for that we would propose as a ticket Wm. J. Bryan and Charlie Chaplin. This would unite the Jemon belts on both oceans and make the coming campaign a round of innocent merriment, the lungs of Florida and the legs of California contributing equally to the enjoyment.

Work Expected to be Completed Within 30 Days.
Paving work on that portion of the coast boulevard lying between Huntington Beach and the Newport Beach boulevard and grading the highway between the beach boulevard and the Balboa Palisades may start within the next thirty days, according to a statement by J. L. McBride, superintendent of county highways, following receipt of information that the state highway commission had awarded the contract to W. F. Brawley of El Centro, on his bid of $188,025.35.
At the same time McBride stated that he would present to the board of supervisors next Tuesday plans for the bridge to be constructed across the Santa Ana river as a part of the highway program. Plans have been approved by the state highway commission. McBride will ask for approval by the supervisors and authorization to call for bids.
Award of the contracts signals the beginning of the end of a long fight by beach residents to establish a direct highway between Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, it was declared here today by a Newport Beach property owner.
While the section is a portion of the programmed building of a concrete road along the county beach line from Long Beach to Serra, to Newport Beachites the link between Newport

LAMP TRIMMED AT LAST
The United States Government has recently ordered the deportation of an alien woman who has been operating a disreputable house for many years in a Pacific Coast city, and has accumulated a fortune in the business. Her establishment has been raided by local authorities 30 times in the last eight years, as shown by the records. All of which serves to illustrate the well-known fact that the immigration laws are all right, but that there has been gross laxity in their enforcement. The deportation came eight years late.
TOO MUCH FOR STUTTERER
A master in a large school room called upon Smith, who stutters, to parse the sentence: "The propinquity of the porcupine made pot-shooting at the hippopotamus virtually impossible."
Smith gave a wild glance around the room and said: "Professor, now ain't t-t-that a d-deuce of a question to ask me?"
