Resolution was adopted for the formation of the Yorba Linda Lighting District and ordering that an election be held in said proposed District on the 29th day of January, 1924. Notice of said election to be given in Yorba Linda Star. Resolution was passed, resolving A Democratic Congressman from Nebraska having denounced the Republican Administration as 'damnably reactionary,' it is worth while to look back over the record and see what it is that he thus condemns. Mr. Coolidge has been in office but a few months, and with Congress in recess, so that his is only a small part of the Administration so vigorously denounced by the Democratic legislator. Moreover, the President is only a part of the Administration. Congress is equally a part of the present regime. In fact, it is the part to which the Democratic Congressman appealed when he asked the radical Republicans to "come over" and join the Democrats. But to the record. When Mr. Harding became President, the great issue before the country was foreign affairs. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Cox had been in favor of going into the League of Nations and Mr. Harding had announced his policy of staying out. We stayed out, and even the Democrats are now pretty well satisfied with that policy. But we did not remain inactive. President Harding called a conference which settled various controversies in the Pacific and also agreed upon a plan for limitation of armaments which has put an end to the race in battleship building. This has been generally recognized throughout the world as the greatest step ever taken toward world peace. Is that "damnably reactionary?" In domestic affairs there is much to look back upon with pride. The public debt has been reduced $2,000,000 and at the same time public expenses have been cut year after year, laying the foundation for one tax cut early in the Republican regime and another one in the present session. In 1920, more than two years after the close of the war, while the Democrats eroded home industry with adults to working people; Great Britain on the debated peace in South America; deficits in ship operations; more business in government; the Budget Bureau. The Republican Administration found agriculture in the depths of depression and adopted every measure that the leaders of agricultural organizations asked in an effort to provide relief. The result has been effective as to every branch of agriculture except wheat raising which is depressed by over production. The Republican Administration found 4,000,000 men out of employment. Since that time every man who wanted a job has had it and at good wages. Is that "damnably reactionary?" The Republican Administration found disabled veterans inadequately cared for and has rushed hospital construction and equipment and rehabilitation until there are now vacant beds in hospitals and every wounded veteran has been trained for a vocation. Is that "damnably reactionary?" The list is too long to discuss in detail. The Administration got the railroads back into private ownership where they are giving the best service in railroad history. It restricted immigration; it enacted a tariff law that has not been prohibitive but has fostered home industry with beneficial results to working people; it satisfactorily reached an agreement with Great Britain on the debt; it promoted peace in South America; it reduced the deficits in ship operation; it put more business in government through the Budget Bureau. Is that "damnably reactionary?" President Coolidge has been following the policies established in the earlier years of the Republiiran regime. He is urging continued economy, ennew French budget is made to balance, on the face of it, but that is mere political hocus-pocus, belled by the rate of exchange and accomplished by counting reparation checks before they are hatched. Fortunately Premier Poincare and his militarist associates are beginning to suspect at last that they are on the wrong track, and are more willing to listen to clear-headed advice from the outer world. VOTERS AGREE WITH FORD It is undoubtedly true, as a prominent Democrat says, that Henry Ford cannot carry all his admirers into the Colldge camp, but the same line of reasoning which impelled Ford to anounce himself for Coolidge will carry his admirers in that direction also. Probably there are not over a thousand voters in the United States who would vote for Coolidge just because Ford is going to vote for Coolidge. But there are hundreds if thousands who will vote for Coolidge because they have reached exactly the same conclusion that Ford reached—that Coolidge is trying to do what is right and that the country will be safe under his leadership. While we have had misfortune in some places, there was never a time in our history when a larger proportion of our people were prosperous and happy. Why change? That is the question Ford asked and it is the question hundreds of thousands of others are asking. Others were ashing it before Ford did, but, because of his fame as an automobile manufacturer, his statement of the question received wide publicity. The people of the country will not vote for a change unless someone red home industry with beneficial results to working people; it satisfactorily reached an agreement with Great Britain on the debt; it promoted peace in South America; it reduced the deficits in ship operation; it put more business in government through the Budget Bureau. Is that "damnably reactionary?" President Coolidge has been following the policies established in the earlier years of the Repoblliran regime. He is urging continued economy, enforcement of law, more efficiency in public service, encouragement of individual initiative and enterprise. Is all that "damnably reactionary?" Few voters will say it is. FRANCE FINANCES The French franc, nominally worth a little over 19 cents, lately has been around 5 cents. That is the lowest the franc ever went. It stood at nearly 7½ cents last January, when France entered the Ruhr. There is a loss of 30 per cent in the credit of the French government within one year. It is as if our paper and silver dollars dropped to 70 cents in international exchange. It is impossible to attribute this tragic lapse of credit and financial soundness to anything else than the military policy of Premier Poincare. What has happened fulfills the predictions made by intelligent American observers when Poincare seized the Ruhr. The American press at that time was almost unanimous in regretting the step, not because it meant pressure on Germany but because it was not likely to benefit France, while it would certainly retard the economic revival of Europe. France during this year, spending more than ever to make Germany pay, has collected less than ever. NOT IDENTIFIED The orderly officer was inspecting rations. "Any complaints?" he asked.
