Gresswell celebrated a birthday Sunday at Orange county park. A party had been arranged by himself and wife, and the park was chosen as the place for holding the celebration and partaking of the birthday dinner. Children and grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Gresswell were their guests. Included in the party were: Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Owen, of Glendale; Mr. and Mrs. William Smith and David Pryer, of Huntington Park; Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Gresswell, Los Angeles; besides eleven grand-children of Mr. and Mrs. Gresswell. Fears for the walnut crop in the Anaheim district, following a rain of 26 of an inch Sunday night were allayed when Walter Ross, secretary-manager of the Anaheim Walnut Growers' association, announced that the showers had been a benefit rather than a detriment to the crop. Continued rainfall which would halt the harvest and cause the nuts already on the ground to mold would mean a large loss to growers. Mr. Ross pointed out, but the light showers, followed by sunshine, only aided pickers in removing the shuck as the harvest continued uninterrupted. Regardless of the fact that opening prices were slightly lower than they were last year, New York failed to buy her customary supply of California walnuts when the new crop went onto the market, a few days ago, it was learned yesterday. An interesting observation in that connection was the offering by an independent walnut packer, of shipments from this state to the New York trade at prices in advance of those quoted by the California Walnut Growers' association, and the equally interesting observation that New York smilingly declined the offer. According to reliable reports from the east, not a single sale was made on this offer, the trade even reluctant to confirm the usual percentage of the associations' crop at the opening prices. The sales department of the California Walnut Growers' association notes some interesting re-actions in KENSTEIN'S emi-Annual LK SALE Starts Friday see the Windows for Particulars KENSTEIN'S ANAHEIM KEENSTEIN'S ANAHEIM Cal. of police announced to the free men, believing attends any one shall pay forcing himself in the management city, exall of them on of a pass expectation overlook things notice. venture in Buena Park recis B. Dr. Lynd to the scene further inves connection with the sale of this year's crop. For instance, the allotment for the New York trade was based upon careful estimates of purchases in former years, coupled with judgment of the increase in population and the measure of prosperity which is being enjoyed by New Yorkers, and Gotham's walnut orders fell somewhat below her purchase of former years. South Dakota took up her full allotment, while North Dakota fell far short of the estimated demand. Nebraska absorbed her full allotment, while Kansas missed the mark by a wide margin. The demand in the middle west was much stronger than had been expected, while the demand in the east was shorter, indicating, in the opinion of association officials, that the east is going in for foreign nuts at their present price, which is two and one-half cents lower than the price of foreign walnuts last year. The foreign importers are intensifying their sales campaign this year by guaranteeing a 90 per cent crack, it is said. It was stated yesterday by Carlyle Thorpe, general manager of the California Walnut Growers' association, that confirmation of allotments which were made earlier in the season amounts to about 90 per cent of the probable tonnage which the association will have to offer. The tonnage, Mr. Thorpe asserts, is falling somewhat below the earlier estimates, probably because a large proportion of the crop consists of small sizes, of which it takes a large number to make a pound. The visible supply of walnuts which the association will have to sell has been so well booked up that the organization has temporarily withdrawn from the market, Mr. Thorpe an slow starter every year. In the Caltek and Pomona games the Trojans looked very good defensively, but very poor offensively. To say that they were good on the defense is to speak of the regulars. As soon as the second string men went in, both Caltek and Pomona scored. Neither team could gain an inch through Henderson's first line. Saturday's game established one thing—that Gordon Campbell must be rated the star of the backfield this year. He was a dynamo of action, and when he started he usually went where he wanted to go. He will bear watching this year. The U. S. C. team will be at its best against Nevada. Big Norman "Swede" Anderson, out of the Pomona game with an injured knee, will be back at left tackle and will strengthen the line where it was weakest last Saturday. The team has learned considerable football now, and Henderson has discovered that his best backfield combination is Dolley, quarterback; Riddle and Newman, halfbacks, and Campbell, fullback. When he needs a punter badly he can send in Otto Anderson. With Anderson out, Gene Dorsey, right end, does the kicking. Stark is the regular right end, but Dorsey proved Saturday that he can hold down the job well enough so permit him to be in the game for more reasons than merely to punt. THIRD ANNUAL DEBERT PLAY The production in dramatic form of an Indian legend in the midst of the desert promises to be the inauguration of an annual festival of remarkable interest. The silence, immensity and mystery TROJANS AND THE WOLF PACK MEET SATURDAY Great Football Game Expected at the Los Angeles Coliseum Coach Elmer Henderson's University of Southern California Trojans are facing their first real test of the season Saturday when they meet the University of Nevada in the Los Angeles coliseum. The freshmen will play Long Beach high in the preliminary game. Although defeated by Stanford, 27 to 0, the Nevada Wolf Pack is a worthy foe. Coach "Corky" Courtright has the strongest team in Nevada's history, and as his 1922 outfit held the Trojans to a 6 to 0 score the game Saturday does not carry with at an altogether bright outlook for Henderson. The Trojan team has failed to impress the public with its strength in the two games played dto date. But it must be remembered that U. S. C. is a well enough oo permit him to be in the game for more reasons than merely to punt. THIRD ANNUAL DESERT PLAY The production in dramatic form of an Indian legend in the midst of the desert promises to be the inauguration of an annual festival of remarkable interest. The silence, immensity and mystery of the desert calls to many who are wearied by the rush and worry of the little things in present-day civilisation. The place chosen for the festival is strange in its beauty. To the right San Jacinto descends to the plain with cliffs of sheer precipices. To the left stretch the unending plains of solitude. In the distance a canyon of Palms lends a touch of verdure to the scene. Amidst the pre-historic rocks and desert plants will the Indians unfold the old tale of the coming of fire to man. So vast is the scene, so majestic the mountain that all physical efforts are dwarfed and the growth of the soul and the story of it can alone hope to measure up to the surroundings. Mary Austin's "Fire," a poetic drama, is worthy of presentation in this place for it deals with the growth of the spiritual man in pre-historic times. Never has a play been given in such romantic conditions and those who witness the first Desert Festival will enjoy a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Mr. Bryan now appears to be about as much out of place in politics as an old fashioned girl at petting party.
