IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper From Gazette of Feb. 22, 1873. In Memoriam—San Diego, February 18th, 1873. A. Langenberger—Our poor friend Strobel died in London yesterday. He was attended by my old friend Thompson, of La Paz—John Forster, Max Frantz. Otto Strobel was born at Munich, Bavaria, on the 1st day of February, 1826, of Roman Catholic parents. He was educated as a soldier, and at the commencement of trouble in Germany in 1848 was a lieutenant in the Bavarian army. He cast his fortunes with the Liberal party and on their defeat was exiled from his native country. He saw service in England, coming from there to Washington, D.C., where he met John C. Fremont. He came to California with Fremont on his record trip across the plains and was later given full charge of his mining interests on the Mariposa grant. He later joined as a member of the staff, the Walker expedition, which was ended by the defeat of the Americans at Granada. A second time an exile, he again made his way to America. In 1865 he came to Anaheim, where he has since recidied. Five months ago he was sent to Europe in order to effect the sale of the island of Santa Catalina, a valuable mineral deposit lying off San Pedro, and it was whilst engaged in completing his negotiations that he received the inevitable usmmons which must come to all. Major Strobel possessed an indescribable charm of manner and irresistably attracted all with whom he came in contact. He Orizaba. Mr. Crowther went north several weeks ago to bring his family to Anaheim where they will make their future home. Alu Jacoby, of Wilmington, was in town yesterday. Deeds Filed—A. Robinson, trustee, to Christian Meyerholz, 100 acres in township 3 south, range 10 west, for $1200. John C. Hill to J. C. Hill, lot on extension of Lemon street, Anaheim, $151. Albert Johnson to Chas. Hille, two lots in Santa Ana. The ball given last evening at the Enterprise hall was certainly the most brilliant and recherche affair that ever took place in Anaheim. Precisely at twelve o'clock a large bonfire which has been previously prepared was lighted and a salute of twenty guns ushered in the natal day of George Washington. Berna—On February 18th, to the wife of Theo Rimpau, a son. Public Notice—You are hereby notified that my wife, Rebecca M. Palmer, has this day left my bed and ward, and that I will not be responsible for any indebtedness that she may incur upon my account or any other. Therefore, I caution all persons from trusting her on my account and that I will hold any and all responsible before the law who will harbor the said Rebecca M. Palmer or aid his way to America. Major Strobel possessed an indescribable charm of manner and irresistably attracted all with whom he came in contact. He was a loving and affectionate father. With full heart we can but briefly express the poignant grief of the entire community at the loss of its most valuued citizen and breathe the conviction that the storm clouds against which he so manfully battled have at last lifted, and though he lies far from his loved ones and the many frends of his manhood—"After life's fitful fever he sleeps well." The Fairview farmers' club met on Thursday evening, February 13th. The vice-president was in the chair. Committees were appointed to obtain information relative to the best methods of providing storage and transportation for produce. The question, "Resolved... That the co-operation of farmers is beneficial to their welfare," was discussed. An essay by J. D. Taylor was read on the subject. The next meeting will be on the fourth Thursday of the present month at the Fairview school house, at 7 p.m. Daniel Cummins, Sr., Thomas Cahl, John Gwin and W. H. Cheeseman came forward and joined the club. Adjourned.—D. R. Coles, secretary. Henry Bremmerman, late proprietor of the Anaheim hotel, met with a severe accident last Wednesday evening. In examining his gun, preparatory to next day's hunting, it went off, the charge entering his side. The wound, though serious, is not considered fatal. He is attended by Dr. Hardin. Messrs. Hanna and Adams were passengers on the Orizaba from San Francisco. Theo. Reiser and lady are amongst the passengers on the steamer Pacific due in San Pedro this morning. B. Dreyfus returned on Wednesday from his recent trip to San Diego county. Public Notice—You are hereby notified that my wife, Rebecca M. Therefore, I caution all persons from trusting her on my account and that I will hold any and all responsible before the law who will harbor the said Rebecca M. Palmer or aid or abet therein.—Nathan A. Palmer, her husband, Gospel Swamp, San Joaquin Precinct, Los Angeles county, February 19th, 1873. The Alameda County Gazette says that the main issue in the fight over the county seat of Kern county is the relative amount of "bitters" consumed by the rival towns. If this is so, we can prophesy that Havilah will remain the county seat. The editor of the "Miner" can consume more I. X. L. to get up an appetite than any man we ever knew, and we ought to know something about it. Carol--A You Can't Grow Frontline In the 700 Blvd. One of Anaheim Messrs. D. Brown made public. An inquest into the death Monday morning of B. Kelmanson, Anaheim business man, whose automobile was struck by a Los Angeles bound trolley car, was held at the Backs, Terry and Campbell chapel. Members of the trolley car crew and others who identified Kelmanson testified. The jury exonerated the motorman. At 4 p.m. at the same funeral rooms, an inquest into the death of Miss Marcella Feraud, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Feraud, of Anaheim, was held. The Feraud girl was struck by an automobile driven by Mrs. F. T. Grable, of Huntington Beach, as she was riding a bicycle on Garden Grove boulevard outside the Anaheim city limits. Mrs. Grable was blameless, the jury decided. The accident in which Salvatore Alba, 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Aliba, lost his life, was unavoidable, a verdict stated. SUSPECTED OF FUR THEFT County authorities, in cooperation with representatives of a private detective agency, are endeavoring to identify Ray Murray, arrested as the man who Sunday broke into the post-office at Sunset Beach, as the man who stole valuable furs from a Long Beach woman, and who is wanted by authorities for a violation of the postal laws in Washington. According to a private detective, Murray fits the description of a man named Davis, whom officers have been seeking in connection with the Long Beach robbery. They had had Murray under surveillance for several weeks before he was arrested by Sheriff Sam Jernigan and his deputies, they said. WAR ON FOREST OUTLAWS Forest rangers last year killed 274 mountain lions, coyotes and bob cats on the national forests of California, report the United States forest service. The destruction of these forest outlaws will save many deer and other game, as well as thousands of dollars worth of live stock, all of which are preyed upon by these varmints. The Santa Barbara national forest in southern California heads the list with a kill of 105 coyotes, 53 wildcats and 41 mountain lions. The destruction of predatory animals is one of the many cooperative activities of the rangers in the interests of the users of the national forests.
