SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS Protest of M. Paschall in the matter of the La Habra storm water protection district was read. Protest was overruled. Resolution of the board of supervisors of Orange county, California, calling an election for the election of three trustees of the La Habra storm water protection district of Orange county was unanimously adopted by the board. Said election to be held on the 21st day of November 1922. The resolution in the matter of the purchase of real property by the county of Orange for public purposes from the California Crate company was unanimously adopted. Price for same being $4750. The chairman was authorized to ap prove bond on map of tract No. 334 and same was adopted as the official plotting of said tract. An appropriation of $2000 was ordered made to be used in the flood control of the tri-counties. Fumigating licenses were ordered issued to Chas. A. Barston, Homer Phillips, R. Gantelum, M. Alizalda, H. de Leon and A. Angulo, spraying II licenses were ordered issued to Stearns & Farquhar and C. E. Douglas. The chairman was authorized to ap prove bond on map of tract No. 331 and same was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Chairman was authorized to approve the bond on street work. The chairman was authorized to ap prove bond on map of tract No. 321 and map of said tract was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Mr. Fogg, contractor for road work in map tract No. 213 was granted an extension of time of 12 months to complete his contract, subject to approval of bondsmen. That Ping Pong is a Chink. THE REPUBLICAN TICKET Electors seeking to decide how they should cast their ballots have three methods of determining that most important question. One of these is the record of the various parties, for the fact must not be forgotten that government in the United States is basically one of party administration and of party responsibility. If a party in power has shown competence in the management of affairs; integrity in the conduct of public business; if a party has been forward-looking, and has translated party pledges into actual legislative accomplishment—that party invites the confidence of electors and justifies their vote. There is no question but that the Republican party in California can qualify before any fair-minded elector when this first test is applied to its record. A second test is the things for which the party stands. Party platforms are not and should not be considered as mere scraps of paper. In California the party profram expresses the opinion of candidates nominated on the Republican ticket and hence of men who are in a position to make their pledges effective if they are elected to office. Read the platform of the party Study it carefully. You will find the Republican platform in California, a forward-looking document, specific in its pledges, clear and distinct in its statements. You will find that it pledges the party to a The chairman was authorized to approve the bond on street work. Specifications, plans and profiles as presented by the county engineer, with his recommendation for the improvement of East Chapman avenue were adopted by the board. Notice for bids for doing said work to be given by publication in the Orange News Bids to be received up to 1 y. a. m. November 6th. Notice for bids for doing said work to be given by publication in the Huntington Beach News. Bids to be received up to 11 a. m. November 6th. The concrete reservoir at the county park was accepted as completed by J. P. Hunter, contractor, as per recommendation of the county engineer. Specifications, plans and profiles as presented by the county engineer, with his recommendation for the improvement of the Laguna road, were adopted by the board. Notice for bids for doing said work to be given by publication in the Santa Ana Bulletin Bids to be received up to 11 a. m. November 8th. The county auditor was directed to transfer from the county park fund to the county library fund, the sum of $163.91. Resolution of intention to purchase real property from Wayland Wood for the use of the county for public purposes was unanimously adopted by the board of supervisors. November 14th at 10 a. m. is the time fixed when the board of supervisors will meet at the court house to consummate said purchase. The purchasing agent was authorized to sell the two old Trundorf tractors. Let The Merry Dumbell's Ring According to reports from freshmen English classes at the University of California, the party program expresses the opinion of candidates nominated on the Republican ticket and hence of men who are in a position to make their pledges effective if they are elected to office. Read the platform of the party Study it carefully. You will find the Republican platform in California, a forward-looking document, specific in its pledges, clear and distinct in its statements. You will find that it pledges the party to a continuation of the progressive legislation that has made California one of the politically outstanding states in the union. The Republican party today measures up to the platform test. The qualifications of nominees; their ability, integrity, and their experience, is another test by which an elector may judge how he may best cast his vote. The nominees of the Republican party will measure up under this test. Hiram W. Johnson, nominee of the party for United States senator, looms up as one of the prominent figures in the United States. Friend W. Richardson, nominee for governor, has served California as state printer and as state treasurer and his conduct of both offices has won general commendation. He knows the state and knows intimately the machinery of government. He promises a continuation of the policies of state government at great decrease in their cost. Certainly no elector can object to an effort to reduce governmental costs, particularly where service is not jeopardized. For Lieutenant Governor C. C. Young has served the state most effectively in that office. His chief duty is to preside over the senate. The fairness with which he has administered that office is shown by the fact that party lines were swept aside in his favor and in the primary election Democratic legislators joined with Republicans in endorsing him for re-election. Should the governor of the state be unable to administer the duties of his office, through death or other misfortune, the people could centrust Mr. Young with the duties of that office with full confidence that they would be handled ably and well. Frank Jordan, nominee of the party for secretary of state; Ray L. Riley state controller, U. S. Webb, attorney general; W. S. Kingsbury, surveyor general, are incumbents in the office and trained in the duties of the officiaries for which they have been select- LET THE MERRY DUMBELLS RING According to reports from freshmen English classes at the University of Southern California, some of the students not only get their metaphors mixed at times, but seem to think that Alma Mater is a musical comedy star. That Kelly Pool is a swimming hole. That Rex Beach is a summer resort. That Babe Ruth is a chorus girl. That a Dough Boy is made of flour. That Fort Lee is a Chinaman. That Sandy Hook is a Scotchman. That a Movie Serial is a breakfast food. That Mississippi is a married woman. That Auction Bridge is something people walk over. That a Cocoanut is a guy that is crazy over cocoa. That Man-O-War is a battleship. That Marion Ohio and Florence Italy are girl friends. That B. V. D. is a college degree. That Merry Christmas is a movie actress. That a Knighthood is a boudoir cap. That a Nightmare is a horse. That Coffee grounds is a baseball field. That Alice Lake is a body of water. That a Banana Split is an acrobatic stunt. That Long Branch is a tree. That Marshall Field is a playground. That C. O. D. is a radio station. That General Delivery is a War Veteran. That Monte Carlo is a movie actor. Frank Jordan, nominee of the party for secretary of state; Ray L. Riley state controller, U. S. Webb, attorney general; W. S. Kingsbury, surveyor general, are incumbents in the office and trained in the duties of the offices for which they have been selected. Their administration of these offices justifies public confidence in their election. Charles G. Johnson nominee for state treasurer, was formerly state sealer of weights and measures. He, too, can stand the test of the strictest investigation of his record. The mere recital of the nominees of the party for congress carries with it a story of service well done, both for state and nation. On its record, on its platform, and on the personnel of its nominees the Republican ticket is worthy of the confidence of the electors of the state, and should receive their ballots on election day. WATER COMPANY OPPOSES WATER AND POWER ACT At a meeting of the board of directors of the Anaheim Union Water company Saturday a resolution was adopted opposing the water and power act proposition on the November ballot. The resolution introduced by Annin was as follows: "Resolved, That the board of directors of the Anaheim Union Water company hereby goes on record as unalterably and unqualifiedly opposed to the initiative measure known as the water and power act, to be voted on as an amendment to the state constitution." HEYINGS' PHARMACY Housing Law Drafted at direction of the Governor because of public demand for changes from existing laws. Careful study made months before legislature convened, by experts, architects and engineers, public officials, health officers, fire chiefs, building inspectors, etc. Passed unanimously by Senate and Assembly. Encourages decently built homes. Gives preference to detached homes and flats rather than tenements. Provides moral and fire safeguards. Does not impair requirements for health, safety, comfort and convenience of occupants. Makes permissive use of properties practically outlawed by impractical unnecessary requirements. Permits construction consistent with modern practice. Encourages new buildings; makes more work for labor, reduces costs. Will reduce rentals, lower taxes and insurance. Safeguards life, reduces fire hazards and protects women and children. Does not prohibit wooden shingle roofs approved by city officials. Does not affect existing roofs at any time. Investigation disproves misrepresentation of opponents. The self-evident merits of this law command support of all public-spirited citizens.
