IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Items of Local Interest Culled from the Files of Former Issues of This Paper From Gazette of Aug. 24, 1872. John W. Clark has on his farm near town alfalfa (or chili clover) which was sowed August 1st and on the 18th of the same month had attained a height of 25 inches. Also corn, called Sanford variety, which is silked out in less than two months from the date of planting. We return thanks to Mrs. Hammes for a very acceptable present of some fine peaches from her orchard. Catholic services will be held in the church here tomorrow. John Carlin, insurance agent, ana Wm. B. Roe, of the firm of Roe & Garden, Los Angeles, paid us a flying visit on Thursday last. We are told that h0 sacks, the first shipment of the season, of castor beans, was made by steamer of the 16th inst. from San Pedro to San Francisco. Harry Polhemus informs us that lately while driving about eight miles across the hills in southeasterly direction from C. L. Strong's residence, he counted 72 tarantulas in and near the road. Some of these are very large, having a spread as they stand on their feet of at least four inches, and standing up about 1 1-2 inches high. Nice for picnickers. A very pleasant ball was held on Friday evening last at Enterprise hall... From Gazette of August 29, 1897. Mrs. Wm. Konig, Adela Dotter, Cornie Dotter, Lottle Dotter and Prof. Milton Carlson, of Los Angeles, returned last week from a couple of weeks' outing at Newport Beach. Sheriff Nichols was over from Santa Ana on Monday to serve an execution. W. T. Brown, of the lumber yard, is able to be out against after suffering with an inflamed eyed, caused by getting a grain of saw dust into it. Capt. Victor Schumacher has the thanks of the editorial household for a bountiful supply of Kelsey plums. peaches and pears. The captain's trees are laden with fine fruit, yet the market is so inviting he will take out the trees and plant his ranch to walnuts. In this his head is eminently level. Walnuts will be the coming crop in this county. Hank Stough and wife and little child of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Porter are off on a camping expedition to Pomono, Chino, Riverside and other neighboring towns to be absent until the end of the week. Sam Federman was down from Los Angeles on a short visit some days ago. Newman Essick is taking the place of Mr. Blennerhassett at the water office, the latter gentleman being at... Peter Richards provided the supper. Twenty-eight couples were in attendance. The managers were Frank Millenz, Max Nebelung and A. J. Brown. It is estimated that even at the present low prices, the grain crop produced near Anaheim this year will bring $150,000. That's better than grasshoppers. Among the arrivals by steamer yesterday were Gov. Downey and wife, who returned to Los Angeles from their visit to Baltimore and Greeley's Chappaqua farm, looking halter than ever. Our fellow-citizen, Max Nebelung, was admitted to citizenship last Tuesday. Another good man for Uncle Sam. Westminster dedicated her new school house on Tuesday. The dedicatory address was delivered by Rev. Dr. Poor. He was followed by W. M. McFadden, who delivered a short address in which he stated that this was the twenty-third school house which had been dedicated during his official term. Rev. Webber, of the Anaheim Presbyterian church delivered the closing address. The choir, consisting of Mr. McPherson, Frank Poor, Mrs. Bowley, Mrs. Anderson and the two Mrs. Goldworthy's, enlivened the intervals with music. After the exercises, a bountiful dinner was served. School will be commenced next Monday. Con. Howe, teacher. The trustees are M. B. Craig, Jesse Davis and J. S. Merritt. Among those present were: Judge Every and family, B. F. E. Kellogg and family, G. G. Tompkins and family, Dr. J. S. Gardiner, Mrs. Tarver, B. H. Bancroft and family, P. C. McKinnie and lady, Mrs. W. N. Hardin, Miss Bessie Hardin, Tom Sam Federman was down from Los Angeles on a short visit some days ago. Rae and daughter, Miss Ella Rae, left on Tuesday for a fortnight's outing at Arrowhead Springs. Miss Flora Davis has returned from an outing at Newport Beach. Mrs. Crist has returned from a trip to San Diego. Senator Perkins has our thanks for a number of public documents. Miss Bickel, of Los Asgeles, is visiting with Miss Kate Backs. Mrs. S. Kuchel and Miss Jessie Meirose returned on Friday from a fortnight's outing with relatives at Escondido. J. H. Clabaugh and wife celebrated their fifteenth anniversary of their marriage on Tuesday last. A number of invited guests were present and numerous gifts were bestowed upon the worthy couple. Count Bozenta and Madame Modjeska returned on Monday from San Francisco and are guests of Mrs. Langenberger. They will remain in southern California a fortnight before leaving for the east. Miss Mable Langenberger, who accompanied them to the city, remains for a further visit with friends. Otto Zeus, the satanic majesty of our composing room, has returned from the Landing and the paper will get out on time and have lots of news and everything will be all right again. The meeting was called to order by Chas. G. Johnston. On motion Major Max Strobel was called to the chair. Chas. A. Gardner acted as secretary pro tem, and R. Luedke was elected treasurer. While Percy Dickel, the four year old son of H. A. Dickel, was playing at Mrs. Langenberger's residence on Saturday afternoon he was quite badly burned about the feet by jumping across the cement ditch into a quantity of ashes that remained from a brush fire. He is recovering nicely. Mesdames McWilliams and Middleham and their families are sojourning at Long Beach. J. B. Neff left on Tuesday for San Francisco, whence he leaves shortly for a visit of some months' duration to his old home in Ohio. The board of city trustees met in regular session on Tuesday evening, present Trustees Rust, Lewis, Helmsen and Groat; absent, Conrad. Marshall Steadman reported in the matter of the hog pen complained of by Mr. Spoerl, that Host Blout has agreed to dispose of the porkers and abate the nuisance. Trustee Lewis submitted the draft of an ordinance levying a municipal property tax of $1.15 on the hundred Trustee Helmsen moved that the city clerk be instructed to notify Wyho & Lawrence to take immediate steps toward installing the Fischer engine, which Mr. Wyho sold the city and agreed to deliver.
