Eliminates Frost Danger That the danger of frost can be practically eliminated is the statement of Champ S. Vance, vice-president of the Los Angeles Gas and Electric corporation, who is making a study of frost conditions in southern California. So interested was he in the frost prevention conference at Covina that he has ordered a number of other tests to be made in order to prove to every city and town in southern California that he has the panacea for the frost peril. Ten pounds of briquets were burned in an open fire-pot and the result was most interesting, according to Mr. Vance, who superintended the experiment. It was ascertained that the briquets will burn for almost five hours and that after the first hour there is absolutely no smoke. The smoke that was emitted during the first hour contained no grit and no greasy substance, such as have worried the housewives during the smudge pot nuisance each year. Another claim made for the briquets is that the ash content is so low that briquets burned in the orchards will not prove a nuisance to those handling them. It was shown that the pots can be replenished while the heat from the carbon coals is still radiating from the pots and that the second replenishing can be done without necessary smoke or smudge. The heat content of the briquets was another question raised. According to Mr. Vance the heat content is greater than that for any other fuel now in use. This was controverted, but the demonstration already proved have shown beyond the shadow of a doubt, Mr. Vance says, that the temperature of an orchard can be raised many degrees by the use of the briquets in the open fire grates. It is the plan of the engineers to seek are well known, say his friends. As founder of the college of law he has established himself as an instructor in legal ethics. Judge Houser was for two years a member of our legislature and since that time has been on the bench of the superior court. It is proposed to show that the temperature in the orchard can be kept above the freezing point if the briquets, dumped in the rows, are used in such a manner that the pots can be replenished every eight hours. Each of these pots will contain enough briquets to burn for at least eight hours, and then with one replenishing it is calculated that this will be sufficient to run the fire pots until the frost period at least for this night has been banished. Orchardists are from Missouri. They are willing to be shown. However, they declared at Covina, and it is the purpose of the engineers who are making the experiments to show the citrus fruit men what they have in the way of briquets. In this manner it is the purpose of those who are distributing the briquets in the southland to bring to prospective purchasers an array of data that will prove to them that the briquet, when burned, even in an open wheelbarrow, can be handled in such manner that the heat will radiate among the trees and through the branches and that the temperature on the coldest nights we have during the winter will be raised to above the danger point. "These claims can be substantiated by our chemical tests," said Mr. Vance. "We have proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that the carbon briquets have a greater heat-content than any other fuel. This is especially true when they are used in the open. Because of the experiments made we have no fear of contradiction, so we are going into this campaign with confidence, knowing we can show the citrus fruit men we have a panacea for the frost evil."
