THE RED SPIDER
AND APHIS CONTROL
Numerous inquiries are made at this office daily, says Horticultural Commissioner A. A. Brock, as to the best treatment for the control of citrus red spider and the green black citrus aphis. In controlling the citrus red spider we should take into consideration that it is impossible to eradicate this pest with our present artificial control measures. Therefore it is necessary to treat when they are numerous enough and are doing sufficient damage to warrant control measures. Some growers have been advised to spray when their orchards are only slightly infested with spider. Others allow their groves to become badly infested before they attempt to spray or dust. We think the best way for handling this pest is to keep a close watch of the orchard and if they are found numerous enough to cause injury to the fruit or foliage they should be sprayed with liquid lime sulphur or dusted with dry owers of sulphur and lime. In some places the grower insists on treating if the damage has been done and the spider been brought under control by the natural enemies. There are three very effective predators which prey on red spider and these are quite numerous in some of the groves of this county. Some of our groves where the spider was very bad only a week or ten days ago are completely under control at the present time. These little friends of the farmer work very fast and will bring under control a bad infestation in the course of a few weeks. The summary of our advice on this pest is that careful watch be kept of the grove and resort to control measures only when the infestation is severe enough to warrant treatment and natural enemies are not numerous enough to destroy the infestation of spider in a very
has been worked out whereby every accident occurring on the state road system is reported daily and represented by a large map in the office of chief engineer. A study of this map intelligently maps the points or sections of roads which need immediate attention. It has established forcibly points where accidents are frequent which otherwise would have been considered safe. It was demonstrated conclusively that "the most dangerous places are frequently the safest," and it was further shown that 70 per cent of our accidents occur on straightways rather than on curves. The only answer to this conclusion is—speeding.
With this information at hand, Maryland has been able to improve its roads to the highest advantage, and the accident record is proving a source of invaluable information. To cite specific examples, it may be well to consider two stretches of road, one between Baltimore and Frederick and the other between Baltimore and Belair. Both of these roads are old-water-bound macadam and carry approximately the same volume and kind of traffic, which is about 4000 vehicles per 24-hour day.
The Bellar road was widened some years ago from 14 to 20 feet, because it had numerous curves and was considered dangerous. On this road, during the months of May, June and August, 1921, there were four accidents, none of which were fatal.
The Frederick pike, one of the straightest roads in the state, was 14 feet wide for its entire length, and prior to the keeping of the accident map was considered safe. On this road during the month of May, June, July and August, 1921, there were 36 accidents, three of which were fatal.
The answer to this comparison is evident. It demonstrated that on the straight road there was a strong tendency fumigating as cautionary measure.
After damage has ground under the trunk lower foliage and frogs roughly saturated wature. A good stranger is also desirable to fruits from the trunk ground under the trunk vent at least a part.
All women do no neighbors—a few ones they haven't any new.

The summary of our advice on this pest is that careful watch be kept of the grove and resort to control measures only when the infestation is severe enough to warrant treatment and natural enemies are not numerous enough to destroy the infestation of spider in a very short time.
At this time of the year aphis attacks the new growth on citrus trees. They multiply very rapidly and give the leaves attacked a very distorted appearance. The very best artificial control for these insects is a spray of nicotine sulphate and whale oil soap or dico dust. There are numerous predators and parasites which prey on these insects and when weather conditions are favorable are able to cope with the increase of the aphis. Some groves where the growers have been making preparations to spray we have found 50 per cent of the aphis parasitized and in orchards like this the increase of these parasites will destroy the infestation in a very short time. In handling aphis it is also necessary to take into consideration the work of the natural enemies and the extent of the infestation before resorting to artificial control measures. Both of these insects multiply with such rapidity that in order to give the grove the necessary protection it should be inspected often and treated before they have had time to retard the development of the new growth or detract from the appearance of the fruit.
STAND FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT
No greater duty presents itself to the American people today than that of law enforcement.
All statistics of criminal courts, from the highest to the lowest, show an alarming increase of crime.
The epidemic of influenza no more thoroughly reaches every part of the country than does this epidemic.
The weakening of the moral forces of the people is plain and palpable, so that remnant of the public that has not been morally enervated has imposed upon it a great burden, one requiring heroic effort to sustain.
The situation as reported from Chicago emphasizes the magnitude of the problem presented. The courts of that city are in a great struggle with the violators of law. The judges declare
It demonstrated that on the straight road there was a strong tendency to speed and that widening was necessary and urgent. It showed conclusively that fast traffic had completely outgrown the width of the road. A contract was immediately entered into for its widening to 20 feet by constructing 3-foot concrete shoulders on each side of the old macadam. The record, since this work has been completed, shows a reduction in accidents of 75 per cent.
At first glance the straight Frederick pike appears to be the safest sort of proposition and the curving Beller road looks like a veritable trap. But that is just the reason why the straight road produces the accidents. It looks too easy.
NEW ERA FOR ALASKA
The year 1922 promises a big revival of industrial progress and permanent settlement in Alaska, with a turning of the tide of immigration into that great storehouse of unknown wealth.
The recent completion of the government railroad and the contemplated trip of President Harding who in August will head a personally conducted official exploration of the territory, accompanied by large retinue of representatives for the great daily newspapers and magazines of the country, is focussing the eyes of the American people on the northern empire.
As a result of the president's visit and the awakened interest in the Queen of the North congress is expected to enact a constructive policy in the near future which will lead to the development of natural resources such as oil, coal, timber, mineral and agricultural wealth. This is bound to result in a new aroused spirit of adventure and settlement of the country by permanent population of home builders. Few persons realize how great a factor such a policy would be in building prosperity for the entire western country. It would mean thousands of openings for business enterprises, industries and the employment of new capital.

thoroughly reaches every part of the country than does this epidemic.
The judges declare there is an organization of criminals so well perfected as to threaten the safety of the city, an insidious and malign power setting itself above the law and boldly flagrantly defying it in every way and everywhere.
The law-abiding element of Chicago is thoroughly aroused and it is of the greatest concern to the whole country that Chicago prove itself able to cope with the wave threatening to engulf it.
In lesser degree the same baleful influence may be discovered in every community throughout the country. It is for this reason that frequent and universal appeal should be made to every moral agency to stand fast. The acid test of righteousness is being made.
WHICH IS THE DANGEROUS ROAD
The question of accidents on the state highways has been given careful consideration by the Maryland state roads commission during the last year, says H. D. Miller, Jr., assistant chief engineer, in an article in a recent issue of Successful Methods. The commission has adopted the policy that in addition to the ordinary maintenance, special attention will be given to the elimination of danger points on the road and thus reduce accidents to a minimum.
With this feature in view, a system development of natural resources such as oil, coal, timber, mineral and agricultural wealth. This is bound to result in a new, aroused spirit of adventure and settlement of the country by permanent population of home builders. Few persons realize how great a factor such a policy would be in building prosperity for the entire western country. It would mean thousands of openings for business enterprises, industries and the employment of new capital.
Undoubtedly for Alaska the past year has been the period of darkness before dawn and the coming year is expected to mark the opening of a new era. Since the passage of the new oil leasing regulations by congress more than two million acres of supposedly oil bearing lands have been staked in Alaska and drilling under the new regulations will start in many sections this summer.
BROWN ROT OF CITRUS
During and after heavy rains investigators have found brown rot injury to oranges and lemons in a number of places. In one case on a single tree 24 affected fruits were found.
Brown rot injury is always likely to occur in citrus orchards when conditions become favorable to its activity. The fungus causing brown rot is a natural resident of our citrus soils, but is prevalent more particularly in the heavier soils. This fungus grows to the surface during wet weather and the spores are splashed up on the low hanging fruit by rain drops, resulting in the characteristic spotting and decay so well known. The same fungus is the one responsible for most of the gummoisis in citrus trees.
It is always a good thing, particularly if the soil is rather heavy, to spray the ground under the trees with a thick Bordeaux mixture as soon af-
