CURSES THE JURY THAT CONVICTED HIM Buena Park Murderer Shows His Vindictive Nature. His bitterness vented in a flow of vile curses against the jury that convicted him, although that same jury saved him from the hangman's noose, Ramon Castro, sentenced to life for the murder of Dementro Rodriguez, was taken to San Quentin Friday. Though his outburst might seem inconsistent in view of the jury's recommendation for imprisonment rather than hanging, Castro permitted his vindictive side to show as he was led from the court room under guard on Thursday night, following the verdict and sentence. His curses were no less intense for all that they were softly uttered. Castro had already served more than eight years at San Quentin for a statutory offense. The prospect of spending the rest of his days there stirred him to anger. As he sat in his cell in the county jail, this anger had ebbed, or was masked behind the cruel jaw, the repelling mouth and the light of venom in the killer's eye. Contrasted to the deadly quiet of the sentenced man, was the picture of jubilance presented by his co-defendant, Francisco Gonzales, who was acquitted by the jury. Overjoyed, the freed man hurried home to his wife and children, who had been in the court room in the afternoon when the jury started its deliberations. Taking the case at 4:30, the jury was out until after 9:30 p.m. Judge Williams was about to call them in and dismiss them because they had been unable to agree upon a verdict regarding Gonzales. As they were called in the jurors were preparing the Gonzales verdict. Acquittal of Gonzales was based up LUXURIES THEN NECESSITIES Nearly all of man's important productive inventions were discovered within the last 200 years. For thousands of years before that, human muscles were in a general sense the only important machinery. Caligula, spendthrift Roman emperor, at his banquets served tongues of birds, brought from great distances by relays of the swiftest runners, at tremendous expense. There is no demand today for bird tongues to tickle the palate. If there were, this ancient delicacy would be put up in big canning plants or rushed in refrigerator cars by fast express. The price would be extremely low, compared with Caligula's time. For instance, a few cents will buy you a package of dates brought from Arabia, a box of leechee nuts from China or a tin of crab-meat from Japan. Wouldn't it be interesting to turn the clock ahead 200 years and see what the steady expansion of quantity production leads to by then? It is not at all improbable that an airplane some day may sell for a few dollars. This may seem ridiculous, but no more so than a suggestion that a watch might some day sell for $1, would have seemed only a few centuries ago when time-pieces were so prohibitively high-priced that only kings and the very wealthy could afford them. Expensive luxuries of today are the cheap necessities of tomorrow. Standard of living steadily advances—but only by increased production. The newspaper reporters who refer to a marriage as "the end of a beautiful romance" often speak more truth than they are aware. Seems strange, but it's often the well kept child that's oftenest spoiled. A lot of girls seem to have revised WORDS Statements That Testimony of When an Anahite the front, telling his sincerity. Taking the case at 4:30, the jury was out until after 9:30 p.m. Judge Williams was about to call them in and dismiss them because they had been unable to agree upon a verdict regarding Gonzales. As they were called in the jurors were preparing the Gonzales verdict. Acquittal of Gonzales was based upon the showing at the trial that he, a friend to both Castro and Rodreguez, the murdered man, was attempting to intervene in their fatal clash at the Twin Barns ranch, instead of aiding Castro in shooting down Rodriguez, a first appeared to be the case. It was testified that after the shooting, while Castro fled, Gonzales had gone to his work, but later becoming frightened at the thought of the deed, joined Castro in flight. Had the jury presented no recommendation of life imprisonment with its verdict regarding Castro, the court would have no alternative. It was stated, except to sentence the slayer to be hanged. The conviction was that of first degree murder. ORANGE COUNTY RANKS HIGH That Orange county's agricultural productivity ranks favorably with the leading counties of the United States eclipsing Fresno and a number of others and giving Sacramento and Sonoma counties a close run for first division honors, was disclosed Monday. Based on 1919 statistics, taken from the 1920 census bureau reports, Orange county stands seventh in the relative productivity of the first thirteen counties in the United States. Figures compiled by Representative Clarence F. Lea, of California, show that Orange county is close to San Joaquin, San Bernardino and Sacramento counties, according to the value of their products per capita of rural population. In the fifty leading counties of the nation it is shown by these reports that thirteen of these counties are in California. The relative productivity of the first thirteen counties in the United States, including Orange county, is given as follows: San Joaquin county, $1128; Whitman, Wash., $1128; San Bernardino, $1000; Sacramento, $874; Sonoma, $870; Tulare, $853; Orange, $857; Yakima, Wash., $826; Livingston, Ill., In the fifty leading counties of the nation it is shown by these reports that thirteen of these counties are in California. ANAHEIM GAZETTE TIES WORDS FROM HOME Statements That May Be Investigated. Testimony of Anaheim Citizens. When an Anaheim citizen comes to the front, telling his friends and neighbors of his experience, you can rely on his sincerity. The statements of people residing in far away places do not command your confidence. Home endorsement is the kind that backs Doan's Kidney Pills. Such testimony is convincing. Investigation proves it true. Below is a statement of an Anaheim resident. No stronger proof of merit can be hand. M. F. Schettles, cement contractor, 200 S. Palm St., says: "My kidneys were out of order and I had attacks of lumbago and soreness across the small of my back. This made it hard for me to keep at my work. My kidneys acted irregularly and I read of Doan's Kidney Pills and got them at Heying's Pharmacy. They weren't long in strengthening my back and kidneys. When I have any return of the trouble, I depend on Doan's Kidney Pills for relief and they never fail to do good." Price 60c, at all dealers.
