CITRUS TREES GRADUALLY CROWDING OUT OLIVES
Decrease in Number of Trees Reported in This County
Olive culture in Orange county is "losing out," according to estimates on record at the office of County Assessor James Sleeper, where it was shown that the number of trees in the county in 1921 was less than it was four years ago.
In 1917, according to estimates based on returns made by field assessors, the number of bearing trees was 5000, while for 1921 the number was 4500. This loss of 500 trees, while not very great, indicates, however, it was pointed out, that the industry is going backward instead of forward in Orange county.
This situation is attributed to the fact that lands that will produce olives also will produce oranges and lemons, and that the latter bring a better financial return, according to statements of those who are in position to know.
It was predicted that in time there would be very few olive trees in Orange county, and that where grown they would be in localities where water necessary for citrus culture was not available.
It was pointed out that many years ago there probably was more acreage to olives than today. Elimination of a big orchard on the Hewes ranch was cited as one of the instances where the olive has given way to citrus fruit. On the Irvine ranch the acreage is diminishing, it was shown, with oranges and lemons occupying the ground formerly set to the oil makers.
According to reports, olive growing has not been very satisfactory from a marketing standpoint. It was said that when there were good crops the prices were low and that when prices ice furnished by motorized highway transportation and by the use of new and better highways which are now being constructed in all parts of the country.
The campaign has resolved itself into the proposition that California highways should be built up to a standard which will permit the operation of any 5-ton truck with capacity load. Thus we would accomplish the end sought by the California state highway commission, which through that gross (TAOIN MH MH MH FRR Charles A. Whitmore, one of the commissioners, has voiced its opinion that gross weights upon trucks should be "limited to that required to permit a 5-ton truck to be loaded to capacity, to stop the loading of other trucks beyond their rated capacity, and to graduate a license which is just according to the wear and tear produced by a vehicle.
HOW SOCIALISTS TREAT SOCIALISTS IN RUSSIA
How Socialists treat all dissenters, even minority Socialists, is illustrated by the conduct of the present Socialist government of Russia. Although Socialists profess to be believers in free speech, free press and the people's rule, in Russia they have set up an oligarchy which maintains itself by the free use of bayonets, hangings and jailings. As compared with the Russia of today under the sway of its Socialist masters, the Russia of the czar was a free and happy country. Those familiar with the habitual intolerance of Socialism are not surprised that in the one government completely dominated by Socialists there is no longer the slightest vestige of free speech, free press or government by the masses.
The Democratic party of Sweden, a Socialist organization of which preent time our normal amounts to nearly six a year. Therefore, during the next 20 years our per capita of the country will require 500,000,000 tons annual fuel needs. The nation would faade, for by that time high grade coal will and we will be compnite and other grading high in water or ly in both.

to olives than today. It was said that when there were good crops the prices were low and that when prices were high the crop was small.
Climatic conditions in Orange county are fairly favorable to the culture of the olive, it was said by an expert. A comparatively mild climate is necessary for olive growing. A temperature of 10 to 14 degrees F. above zero is likely to prove disastrous to trees, and the fruit will usually be injured by a drop below 28 degrees. The latter degree of cold obtains vere very rarely.
Olive culture was introduced into southern California by Franciscan fathers 150 years ago. The original plantings were made near the San Diego mission. Since then olive growing has been carried on in many parts of California and Arizona. Within the past thirty-five years the olive industry has assumed a place of importance in the commercial fruit industry of the United States.
"The basis of the industry in this county is now the production of ripe olive pickles, although for a number of years small quantities of green olive pickles were made of the larger types of fruit," says a statement from the United States department of agriculture. "Until 1900 almost the entire production of olives in this country was utilized for oil."
UNIFORM STATE VEHICLE LAW
Wealth of Nation Immeasurably Increased by Paved Highway
Highways are the companion of progress and with the extension of paved roads into formerly remote agricultural regions, the wealth of the state and nation has been immeasurably increased. From the standpoint of social progress, the farms and rural population have been aided in the enjoyment of cultural and recreational activities which might otherwise be denied them, according to Fred Mott, secretary-manager of the California Motor Transport association.
Regulation of the industry with the enactment of a uniform state vehicle and jailings.
The Democratic party of Sweden, a Socialist organization of which Premier Branting is the head, has been moved to protest against the tyranny of Socialism in Russia because of the imprisonment of 5000 minority Socialists in Georgia and Russia. This protest reads, in part:
"The working class of Sweden has received reports regarding the treatment by the Soviet government of Russia and Georgian Socialists, which has aroused stupefaction and anger. Over 200 Russian Socialists of different groups have been forced to resort to hunger strike in order to call the world's attention to the sufferings to which they are exposed and to obtain forcibly an improvement of their conditions.
"Five thousand Georgian Social Democrats are now in prison on account of their not having voluntarily submitted to the force of Russian occupation. Others are deported by thousands or are forced to keep in hiding in order to escape the fate of those already arrested."
This is the testimony of Socialists against Socialism in power. For the bolsheviks are Mercians—Socialists. They have furnished to the world the best argument ever made against Socialism.
COAL RESOURCES
If all the coal in the United States were to be collected in one place, it would make a cube eight miles long, eight miles wide and eight miles high. Of this huge mass, we have mined less than one percent, or an amount no greater than would be contained in a 300-foot slice from the top of the cube. This all seems reassuring; but here's the rub: Of our total deposits of coal, less than five per cent is fuel that is today regarded as high class coal, and it is almost entirely this better grade coal we have been mining. Already in many parts of our country there is an apparent scarcity of high grade fuel. As time passes, this shortage in high volatile gas coals and other special grades will become more acute.

paved roads into formerly remote agricultural regions, the wealth of the state and nation has been immeasurably increased. From the standpoint of social progress, the farms and rural population have been aided in the enjoyment of cultural and recreational activities which might otherwise be denied them, according to Fred Mott, secretary-manager of the California Motor Transport association.
Regulation of the industry with the enactment of a uniform state vehicle law is now a matter of vital importance. We must use the roads up to the capacity of the tonnage which they will bear without accomplishing their premature destruction. This matter could undoubtedly be taken care of under a uniform state law and the fixing of a just tax which will compensate the state for the wear and tear inflicted upon the highways.
The vital necessity for the use of motor trucks both directly and as railway feeders, is evidenced upon every hand. The importance of motorized transportation to the farmer of California is such that it has broadened his markets and has reduced to a considerable extent the cost of moving his produce to market. The prosperity of our agriculturists should not be imperiled by haphazard and illly considered legislation in our 58 counties. Rather should we have well ordered regulation through the instrumentality of a uniform state vehicle law.
The bureau of public roads of the department of agriculture has completed an investigation which shows that in 1918, the cost of wagon haulage from farms to shipping point averaged 30 cents per ton-mile for wheat; 33 cents for corn, and 48 cents for cotton, while motor truck, averages here shown are but 15 cents for wheat, 15 cents for corn and 18 cents for cotton. This reduction was accomplished in a large measure by the rapidity of serv-

ARMENIA'S CRY FOR AID
The world has not all been saved from hunger. Children in Armenia are crying pleasously for food, and their chief are not being answered. Armenia is Christian, remember—a devoted, worthy people, of religious faith com-ron to that of all Christiandom.
In all the ages since man began to practice cruelties upon his fellow-man no people under the canopy of heaven ever was persecuted so long, so mercilessly, so appallingly. War has ended for all Europe except Armenia. In Armenia the red-hand of human butchers wreak death and devastation. Last year 140 villages were destroyed, thousands of mothers and grown daughters were assaulted brutally and then slain; fathers were herded into buildings and burned; great numbers of orphaned children were driven into the wilderness to wander and die, unless rescued by the near east relief. Conditions in Armenia are worse now than at any time since the armistice.
