HELD FOR MURDER
Ramon Castro and Francisco Gonzales were formally arraigned Saturday on a charge of murdering Demen tro Rodriguez, of Buena Park, and were committed to jail without bail, while awaiting their preliminary hearing.
Following the inquest late Friday, when a coroner's jury found them guilty of killing Rodriguez, the murder charge was filed and the two Mexicans were brought before Justice William French, of Fullerton, by Sheriff C. E. Jackson. The preliminary hearing will also be held in the Fullerton court.
More details, revealing the blood-thirsty nature of the killing at the Twin Barns ranch early Tuesday, were revealed at the inquest, held in the McAuley undertaking parlors at Fullerton. District Attorney A. P. Nelson assisted Coroner Charles D. Brown in conducting the inquest.
According to testimony, Rodriguez, after being ambushed and pursued to the barn by Gonzales and Castro, was dragged from behind another man and was shot down before the horrified eyes of his own 15-year-old daughter.
Reaching the barn, Rodriguez, it was said, had thrown his arms about the neck of Lorenzo Valadez, a ranch employee. He implored Valadez to save him and then hid behind the other. Meanwhile, the daughter, Marie Rodriguez, who had witnessed the start of the gun battle, was rushing from her home to the scene, screaming at her father's pursuers.
She was within ten feet of her father when Gonzales dragged him from behind Valadez and held him up before Castro, who fired two shots into their victim. Rodriguez sank down, dead, at the girl's feet.
Frank Ramirez, foreman of the Twin Barns ranch, and Harry Johnson, a recent arrival from midaho, were also witnesses to the shooting, but had no time to lift a hand to prevent it, they ers in the city of Anaheim agreeing to pay one-half the cost of replacing the open cement ditch. Upon motion this was referred to the ditch committee with power to act.
Communication read from the city of Anaheim requesting that this company pipe the open cement ditch in front of lots 7, 8, 9 and 10, block C of the Lorelei tract. City and property owners agreeing to pay one-half the cost of this change. Upon motion this was referred to the ditch committee with power to act. Communication read from the city of Anaheim requesting this company to pipe the open cement ditch along the south side of the easterly 420 feet of lot 3 of the Weight-Freeman and McCloughan subdivision of the city of Anaheim, city and property owners agreeing to pay one-half the cost of making this change. Upon motion this was referred to the ditch committee with power to act.
Oil reports from the Amalgamated Oil company, St. Helens Petroleum company and Gilmore Petroleum company were read and ordered filed.
IMPROVEMENTS ON LA HABRA HEIGHTS
Southern California is going "avocado wild." The La Habra section is the nesting place for avocados, for the recent freeze did little damage to avocados and citrus fruit in that section.
The J. T. Lyon Realty company, of Anaheim, recently announced that it has secured the Orange county sales rights for La Habra Heights, exclusively, and will conduct an active campaign to tell the people of the great opportunities for raising the avocados and citrus fruits in that section.

Frank Ramirez, foreman of the Twin Barns ranch, and Harry Johnson, a recent arrival from midaho, were also witnesses to the shooting, but had no time to lift a hand to prevent it, they said.
After the shooting Castro and Gonzales fled toward Coyote creek and hid in the brush at the edge of a wharf field, where they were discovered by searching officers.
That Marie Rodriguez, the daughter was the innocent cause of the murder was another theory of the motive advanced. Castro, it was hinted, desired the girl, but was opposed by her father.
An earlier theory of the motive was that Castro, whose parole from a sentence at San Quentin, received on a statutory charge, expired April 6, has sought revenge upon Rodriguez for testifying at the trial.

Superintendent's report for the month of March was read and upon motion accepted and ordered filed.
Upon motion the following transfers of stock were granted: 7 1-2 shares Henrietta McIntyre, 1 2-3 shares to Clarence Hall, 1 1-3 shares Hubbard K. Hall, 1 2-3 shares Bertha Hall, 7 1-2 shares A. S. Sifanklin to Orange County Trust & Savings bank as trustee; 2 shares Edward Karloff to John Ely; one share Southern Pacific Co. to Southern Pacific Railroad company. The application for the transfer of 13 shares J. H. Clever estate to O. H. and The J. T. Lyon Realty company, of Anaheim, recently announced that it has secured the Orange county sales rights for La Habra Heights, exclusively, and will conduct an active campaign to tell the people of the great opportunities for raising the avocados and citrus fruits in that section.
That the terracing or properly located hill lands which would otherwise be unavailable for citrus or avocado plantings, is a practical operation as a frost protection method, was demonstrated at La Habra early this year.
Edwin G. Hart and T. U. Barber, who have holdings of citrus and avocados there, have for years held that terracing affords a practical and desirable means of utilizing land which was so situated that it would not lend itself to the ordinary methods.
While fruit on the lower benches and in the valley was damaged, the lemon and avocado trees on the elevated terraces were untouched by the frost and hundreds of boxes of fine lemons will be harvested without interruption from that tract. Neither fruit, leaves or blossoms of the lemons were touched in the higher levels. Avocados were found in like state and were being sold in the Los Angeles market right through the frost period and for weeks after.
The more sensitive of the avocados on slightly lower points were turned brown and some of the fruit was injured, but many of the resistant strains appeared to have weathered the low temperatures.
In the big fult orchard development project at La Habra Heights, the same theory is being put into practice and it would appear that it would be carried to the same successful culmination there.
This tract comprises 3600 acres. It was the old La Habra rancho, and for a long term of years has been used as a sheep ranch. Some of the land is especially adaptable to the terracing idea and is being so used.
On one slope R. M. Teague has a citrus and avocado nursery of 90 acres. It is planted out to young stock and none of it appeared to have been affected by the low temperatures.
While the development is new and the trees are not of any great age, there was one planting of avocados which was made, following the terracing idea carefully, and perhaps—by reason of greater experience—to a higher degree of perfection than elsewhere. This was on the Halm and Johnson fruit orchard. The writer did

Engineer Carwile submitted an estimate of the cost of surveying and making maps covering the entire system. Mr. Carwile instructed to investigate further and submit bid at the next meeting of the board.
Upon motion warrant ordered drawn to Engineer Carwille for $126.10, engineering fees.
Superintendent Wallop submitted an estimate of the cost of constructing the Kraemer and Alta Vista pipe line. This estimate was ordered Bled. Upon motion the superintendent was instructed to construct a 24-inch pipe line from Kraemer avenue east on Alta Vista avenue 2120 feet and a 16-inch pipe line south from the end of the 24-inch pipe line 2480 feet to Crowther avenue. The proposed Kraemer avenue pipe line laid over until the next meeting.
Communication read from the Union Oil company regarding flood water from the Amalgamated lease. Upon motion this was referred to the oil committee to investigate.
Communication read from the city of Anaheim requesting that this company pipe the open cement ditch on North East street. Anaheim, running 360 feet south from the coroner of East Sycamore street, property own-
remaining standing in the forests of the United States is located in the three Pacific coast states.
Will the children of today, when grown to manhood and womanhood, be proud of their fathers if those fathers do not protect, wisely harvest and seek to continue the forests that nature has provided?
The great forests of the New England states, of the great lakes states and of the south have been proved exhaustible. The forests of the Pacific coast are not inexhaustible.
The forests of California are the source of the streams which supply domestic and irrigation waters. Destruction of these forests by fire means less water for cities and farms.
Grazing and lumbering add to the state's prosperity and depend upon the forests. Forest fires kill the green trees and destroy the grass.
A smoking match tossed to one side, a camp fire left burning, may start a holocaust that will leave in its wake charred tree trunks and ashes. Adopt the habit of being careful with fire and help to cut down the state's enormous annual fire loss.
RURAL CARRIER EXAMINATION
The United States civil service commission has announced an examination to be held at Anaheim, on May 13, to fill the position of rural carrier at Buena Park, and vacancies that may later occur on rural routes from that postoffice. The salary of a rural carrier on a standard daily wagon route of 24 miles is $1800 per annum, with an additional $30 per mile per annum for each mile or major fraction thereof in excess of 24 miles. The salary on motor routes ranges from $2450 to $2600 per annum, according to length. Separate examinations for motor routes and wagon routes are no longer held. Appointments to both positions will be made from the same
This, according to the bar association, is contrary to the ethics of the serted violation of the trust relations legal profession in that it is an existing between client and attorney. Considerable misapprehension has been brought about in some quarters, some concerns and individuals being of the opinion that the bar is aiming at a monopoly in attorneys, and that they might be against the big corporations.
It is understood that the local bar association is practically unanimously in favor of the bill, as passed at the last session of the legislature. In short, it is designed to maintain the laywer's practice as a profession. As one attorney pointed out, most anybody can hang out a shingle, call himself a lawyer and transact business on the outside. Of course he could not go before the courts without having passed the bar examination, but there is rothing to prevent him from drawing up legal documents on the outside.
At a meeting of the Santa Ana Bar association held in the jury room of department No. 1 of the superior court a committee was appointed to arrange for the banquet, which will be held in the evening of an early date. The meeting was attended by nearly every attorney in the county and both superior judges.
WHAT'S THE REASON?
Many Anaheim People In Poor Health Without Knowing the Cause.
There are scores of people who drag out a miserable existence without realizing the cause of their suffering. Day after day they are racked with backache and headache; suffer from nervousness, dizziness, weakness, langour and depression. Perhaps the kidneys have fallen behind in their work of filtering the blood and that may be the root of the trouble.

The salary on motor routes ranges from $2450 to $2600 per annum, according to length. Separate examinations for motor routes and wagon routes are no longer held. Appointments to both positions will be made from the same register. The examination will be open only to citizens who are actually domiciled in the territory of the post-office where the vacancy exists and who meet the other requirements set forth in form 1977. Both men and women, if qualified, may enter this examination, but appointing officers have the legal right to specify the sex desired in requesting certification of eligibles. Women will not be considered for rural carrier appointment unless they are the widows of United States soldiers, sailors or marines, or the wives of United States soldiers, sailors or marines who are physically disqualified for examination by reason of injuries received in the line of military duty. Form 1977 and application blanks may be obtained from the office mentioned above or from the United States civil service commission at Washington, D.C. Applications should be forwarded to the commission at Washington, D.C., at the earliest practicable date.
LAWYERS TO BANQUET
The Orange County Bar association will hold a banquet meeting at an early date at which time the attitude of the association will be ascertained and publicly expressed relative to the referendum invoked by certain trust companies against the Sample bill, an act passed at the last session of the legislature and signed by the governor. This bill is designed to trust companies in acting as attor-trust companies in nacting as attorneys. Heretofore they have had the power to function and perform work done by practicing attorneys, particularly with reference to legal steps in property matters.
