VAN AMBURG ELEPHANT
LIFE SAVING HEROINE
Asiatic Pachyderm Shows Remarkable Devotion in Rescuing Keeper
When Howe's Great London circus with Van Amburg's trained animals appears at Anaheim on Monday, April 10, there will be a great curiosity to view the monster elephant, "Rubber," said to be one of the largest of her species in captivity, without doubt with superior intelligence to that of her fellows. While every animal the eye rests upon within the confines of this "zoological paradise" seems shrouded in mystery to the casual observer, "Rubber" is associated with events of the most profound interest. It is said that at the annual "roundup," or elephant hunt, near Ayuta, which is some forty miles distant from Bangkok, Slam, this particular elephant had been the goal of every hunter for years, but owing to enormous size and strength success had failed to crown their efforts in capturing her until the spring of 1915, when she was among the twenty-three captured—this being the entire haul for the season.
Surprisingly active, considering her enormous size, "Rubber" soon developed remarkable intelligence and has frequently amazed those who have been connected with elephants all their lives by her keen sense of responsibility connected with elephants all their lives by her keen sense of responsibility and the manner in which she once saved her keeper, "Red" McKay, from fatal injury. Elephants are "weather-wise," afraid of lightning and thunder; it is with effort that the keepers quiet them. Storms have caused stampedes and unusual care is taken in fastening them by heavy chains to stakes driven six feet in the earth. One night, in a middle west city, a terrific storm burst with a blinding flash of lightning followed notice for bids for doing said work to be given by publication in the Santa Ana Bulletin. Bids to be received up to April 18, at 11 a.m.

Telephone Traffic
The signals of the traffic officer are obeyed instantly by the intelligent citizen, as he realizes that indifference means confusion and congestion.
Over the wires and through the switchboards of the telephone company there is a constant volume of traffic. Here there is also a signal—the ringing of the telephone bell. A great obstacle in the flow of this traffic is delay in answering the telephone bell.
Answer your telephone bell promptly. You will accommodate the party calling. Your own line will be more quickly cleared for other business.
