SOME MORE VERY SEASONABLE DESERTS Plain Fruit Cake Two cups brown sugar creamed with half cup of shortening; then add 2 cups sour milk. Sift three cups of flour and add to it 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon salt, one-half teaspoon each cloves, and nutmeg. When flour is all stirred in add one and one-half cups walnut meats and one package seeded raisins, floured, and lastly 2 level teaspoons soda mixed in a very little hot water to dissolve it. This cake must be baked slowly. Macaroons Whites of two eggs. 1-2 cup granulated sugar. 2 cups corn flakes. 1-2 cup cocoanut. Beat whites of eggs stiff, add other ingredients. Drop from spoon on buttered pans, bake in moderate oven until light brown. Will make two dozen. Heavenly Hash Two oranges, two bananas, one lb. mixed nuts, one-half lb. dates, one-half lb. of figs, 1 lb. shredded coconut. Quarter oranges, slice bananas, cut dates and figs in half, shell nuts. Into a mold place a layer of each until the mold is filled. Then pour over it one box of gelatin made according to directions on box. Serve cold with whipped cream. Dainties Beat one egg and one cup of sugar together until light. Stir in one cup of English walnuts, chopped fine, and five tablespoons of sifted flour. Beat until light. Butter a tin baking dish and lay over the bottom a sheet of buttered paper. Drop the mixture on the greased paper with a teaspoon. Bake in a medium hot oven from 10 to port restrictions were abolished February 1, for all Americans desiring to enter that country the Southern Pacific company quotes the following from the United States Chamber of Commerce: "State department announces executive order was signed by president of Mexico January 18th, directing abolishment of all passport restrictions against Americans entering Mexico on and after February 1. According to this executive order Americans entering Mexico after That date will not be required to hold passports, permits, identity cards or other similar documents. Similar executive order has been signed by President Harding effective February 1st, extending similar privileges to Mexicans entering the United States from Mexico." SUSTAIN THE QUARANTINE The need of greater effort and greater efficiency in federal and state quarantine was never so apparent as now. Renewed activity in American shipping, increased interchange of fruits and plants and increase in travel all make the need for a greater and more efficient inspection force at every port. California has done her best and so far as possible the federal forces have co-operated. However, the information as to the menace and sentiment favorable to thorough enforcement the country over has not been equal to that in California and the demand for economy has been greater. Inspection at Atlantic ports has been far from as effective as here on the Pacific coast. Even here we need a greater number of men on the job. The Mediterranean fruit fly is only one menace, but it is ever present and the preventing of its entrance will be worth many times the cost of our quarantine service for all time to come. THE MARINE CORPS RECRUITING RESUMED Pursuant to telegraphic instructions from headquarters, recruiting for the marine corps will be resumed immediately, according to Captain J. W. Webb, officer in charge, district of Los Angeles, Sixth and Main streets. Re-enlistments from the army and navy, and original applicants who measure up to the standards of the marine corps will be accepted for three or four year terms. An excellent opportunity is afforded young men for travel, training in some business by correspondence course and for further physical development. Recruiting in the marine corps was discontinued in December, 1921, and no recruits have been taken up to date, except ex-marines. Captain Webb states that men who desire to enlist should make application early, as a limited quota has been assigned to this district for February, and late applicants may have to wait until the following month.
