GOOD COOPS NECESSARY TO PRIZE WINNERS Every Effort to Prepare Fowls for Exhibition Prizes, Fall Unless Proper Care is Taken Not infrequently improperly built and unsuitable coops have resulted in accidents and damage to the fowl in transit, or have presented the birds in such objectionable surroundings that they have been neither pleasing to the general spectator nor to the judge. Where fowls are shipped by express, in order to have them reach their destination in the best possible condition, they should be transported in special shipping coops, which should be substantially built and able to withstand rough handling. Such a coop may be made from waste lumber salvaged from dry goods boxes of second-hand half-inch material. Boards more than one-half inch thick should not be used as they make the coop too heavy and the express charges excessive. The coop should be nailed together with the supports of the slats or cover on the top, which should be put on with screws or hinges and hooks, so that it may be easily opened. This is important, as the top or cover must be opened each time the coop is used, and if put on with nails it is soon broken and the coop spolled. There are standard sizes of coops which commonly are used for shipping poultry, the dimensions of these containers vary according to the number of fowl to be transported. The following dimensions should be used in constructing the coop for one hen or cock, 12 inches wide, 18 inches long and 24 inches high; for two hens or one hen and cock, 12 inches wide, 24 inches long, and 24 inches high. In preparing for shipment, a small quantity of hay, straw or dry shavings should be placed in the bottom of the coop to absorb moisture, and two cups or cans should be provided—one for winder and longer than the mattress, so that the ends and sides can be generously tucked in, and the top of the upper one turned down to keep the blankets clean. The hem at the top of a sheet should be at least 2 1/2 inches, and at the bottom from 3/4 to 1 inch Machine hemmistitching makes a pretty finish for pillow cases and the wider hem of a sheet. Seamless tubing can be bought bought for pillow cases. Soft, fluffy blankets, containing a large proportion of good quality wool, are generally considered more comfortable and also most durable if given proper care. Many reliable manufacturers state the percentage of wool on a card attached to the blanket. Cotton blankets, when new, are in many cases as warm as wool, but they tend to become matter with wear and washing and consequently less warm. If a blanket is chosen with a colored border, the border should be of the same quality wool as the rest of the blanket. Comfortables of wool or cotton batting covered first with cheese-cloth and then with an outer covering or pretty light-weight material are generally needed in the severe weather. Old-fashioned pieced quilts are often interesting, but not very warm, considering their yeight. Triped dimity bed-spreads with pillow shams to match are deservedly popular because they are dainty, easy to launder, durable, and inexpensive. Having two spreads permits a bed to be kept always fresh. HOW TO CLEAN FURS AT HOME Furs may be cleaned by washing in gasoline or in suds made with castile soap and a little borax, followed by several rinsings in clear water, is a helpful suggestion from the biological survey, United States department of agriculture. It is best to hang them THE CHILD'S ALLEY In making the estimate expenses for the committee allowance for each child overlooked. This should enough to cover the school expenses, penchant his Sunday school compe-pleasures, gifts and the small margin for saving. The child should be within this allowance, too much or one item helped to decide on what he will save, in order make up the deficit. He helped out with extra in extreme instances, owing living within the income. A child this trained to handle money when without being either a waster. THE FREE TRADE PROPAGA Senator McCumber, man of the senate final states that the first will be discussed and the pending tariff bill will be the nation plan "and that is considerable discussion members of the committee ever-possible the common specific rather than ad- The valuation plan will plicable only where no far the expensive pro- lated by the big import-the country has not re- weakening of the deter-the Republicans to enact tariff law, nor is it pr- will accomplish anything. BUY HOME MANU Special exhibition coops should be used by poultry club members in exhibiting fowls at county and school fairs or other exhibitions, or by adult showmen in displaying their champion poultry. Such coops should not be used for shipping poultry, but may be employed to take the birds to the show, if carried by wagon or motor car. The floor should be solid and the frame work of wooden sticks, 2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick. The top, back and sides may be covered with lath, wire netting or any kind of thin, strong cloth. The front should be of 2-inch wore netting. If it is impossible to obtain netting, however, laths may be used, but the strips should be placed about 2 1/2 inches apart, to afford as much opportunity as possible to see the birds. The coop should be made in the form of a 2-foot cube, and will accommodate one mature bird or a pair of chickens. If more than this are to be exhibited together the coop should be made larger in proportion to the number of fowls it is to accommodate. Every poultry club member or other fowl fancier, who intends to exhibit birds, should construct one or more exhibition coops of this type, according to the number of specimens he intends to exhibit. Birds can be trained and conditioned in these coops before the exhibition, and after becoming accustomed to them they will appear to better advantage when being judged. Furthermore, when birds are shown in coops of this kind that are uniform in size and type, not only is the appearance of the show room improved, but the individual exhibit is more attractive. Training and care are essential for keeping the coops healthy and productive. HOW TO CLEAN FURS AT HOME Furs may be cleaned in gasoline or in suds made with castile soap and a little borax, followed by several rinsings in clear water, is a helpful suggestion from the biological survey, United States department of agriculture. It is best to hang them out of doors to dry. When dry or nearly so, they require to be stretched and rubbed on flesh side to make them pliable again. Fur garments may be brightened by sponging them with gasoline and then rubbing corn meal into the fur while it is still damp to take up the particles of dirt that have been loosened. Gasoline should never be used, of course, where its fumes can come in contact with fire. Another way of cleaning fur superficially is by means of naphthalene crystals thoroughly rubbed into it. The pulverized crystals and dirt which has been dislodged may be removed by whipping, brushing with a whisk broom, or by a vacuum cleaner. MONEY VALUE OF TREES Four thousand trees purchased from funds supplied by the Yolo county supervisors are to be planted along the state highway between Washington and Woodland. Work has commenced and after the planting the state highway commission will take care of the trees. It is a good work and some day all the counties will fall into line. With the natural advantages, the wonderful productiveness of our plains land, our roads, even the improved ones, are flat and unattractive. There is a dead monotony about traveling along a treeless road, to say nothing of its discomfort in hot weather, that is depressing. When the northern part of the state realizes the money value of roads road interesting and attractive with trees as the south does, it will plant trees. It was not only the orange and lemon groves of southern California that filled tourists with enthusiasm, but the avenue of magnolia and peper trees. It was not so much the money made out of citrus fruit that travelers talked about after they left the territory made out of a desert, but of the beauty of orange groves, roses. BUY HOME MANUFACTURE Buy California-made of good quality, in pre-manufactures of other increase the demand things—this is the unique proposal made by the generation of Women's crime here in California oning is this: Much committed by men own men who would work if Californians buy exfoliaria manufacturers; demand will lead man put more men to work their production to meet demand for their products would be created, and—in the larger cities would be relieved, with crease in the number of men disposed to commit there are more than club women, and their listed in any cause, is method they propose in tical and is bound to be ways, even though it runs the crime-wave. It suitate more jobs for men of work. It would give manufacturing in this add very substantially prosperity by keeping putting into circulation the state's bounds, mil usually spent for produc ed in distant states. This movement is co should receive earnest attention all over the do California a great d could not do it any h MEMORIAL TREE CHOOSE GOOD BEDDING FOR HEALTH AND COMFORT The bed is the most important piece of furniture in a bed room. Home economics of the United States department of agriculture recommends that if only a limited amount may be spent in furnishings, it is wise to economize elsewhere, so that a good mattress and springs may be purchased. The mattress should first be protected by an unbleached muslin slip which can be washed occasionally. Next comes a light-weight quilted pad, also washable, for further protection and smoothness. This can be bought ready-made or mode of muslin and cotton batting, or an old light-colored quilt of cotton blanket may be used. The quality of the sheets and pillow cases depends on how much one has to invest. Homemade sheets and pillow cases have the advantage of being fitted to a particular bed, and often the materials wear better, but ready-made ones of good quality are sometimes more economical to buy. Sheets should be from 24 to 36 inches. When the northern part of the state realizes the money value of roads made interesting and attractive with trees as the south does, it will plant trees. It was not only the orange and lemon groves of southern California that filled tourists with enthusiasm, but the avenue of magnolia and pepper trees. It was not so much the money made out of citrus fruit that travelers talked about after they left the territory made out of a desert, but of the beauty of orange groves, roses, magnolias, palms and pepper trees. Beauty was the advertiser. Beauty is its own excuse for being and satisfies a need. But it has also a money value in attracting and holding desirable people to a place along with good schools, churches, and the means of making a good living. When the north realizes that fully it will try to catch up with the south in tree planting, particularly in the level country. RESEARCH WORTH WHILE Research sounds like a hard word. One thinks of long-whiskered gentlemen in laboratories probing profound mysteries. Some persons have said they thought "a lot of this research stuff is the bunk." But agricultural research is vindicated in Ohio. From 1850 to 1890 the corn yield in Ohio averaged 33 bushels an acre. Then she researchers got busy, and for the last 10 years the average has been 37 bushels. The wheat yield has been increased by research from 12.2 bushels an acre in the '50's to 17.3 bushels for the last decade. Anyone can profit by doing a little research work on his own hook. All that means getting at facts and applying them. Anything that will laugh is a better tonic can prescribe. Love doesn't amount to makes a lover believe aren't so. THE CHILD'S ALLOWANCE In making the estimates for family expenses for the coming year an allowance for each child should not be overlooked. This should be large enough to cover the child's small school expenses, pencils, paper, etc., his Sunday school contribution, little pleasures, gifts and the like, and a small margin for savings. The child should be taught to keep within this allowance. If he spends too much or one item he should be helped to decide on what other item he will save, in order that he might make up the deficit. He should not be helped out with extra money except in extreme instances, or the lesson of living within the income is lost. A child this trained will know how to handle money when he is older, without being either a miser or a waster. THE FREE TRADE PROPAGANDA FUTILE Senator McCumber, the new chairman of the senate finance committee, states that the first question which will be discussed and settled when the pending tariff bill is taken up in the senate will be the American valuation plan "and that is going to take considerable discussion on the part of members of the committee." Wherever possible the committee will apply specific rather than ad valorem rates. The valuation plan will be made applicable only where necessary. Thus far the expensive propaganda circulated by the big importing houses of the country has not resulted in any weakening of the determination of the Republicans to enact a protective tariff law, nor is it probable that it will accomplish anything in the future. Their reasoning is this: Much of the crime is committed by men out of work—by men who would work if they had jobs. If Californians buy extensively of California manufacturers, the increased demand will lead manufacturers to put more men to work, to augment their production to meet the greater demand for their products. So jobs would be created, and unemployment—in the larger cities, especially—would be relieved, with a resultant decrease in the number of idle, desperate men disposed to commit crimes. There are more than 50,000 of these club women, and their influence, enlisted in any cause, is very great. The method they propose is sensible, practical and is bound to be useful in some ways, even though it might not check the crime-wave. It surely would create more jobs for men sorely in need of work. It would greatly stimulate manufacturing in this state. It would add very substantially to California's prosperity by keeping at home and putting into circulation here within the state's bounds, millions of dollars usually spent for products manufactured in distant states. This movement is commendable and should receive earnest and favorable attention all over the state. It would do California a great deal of good and could not do it any harm. This organization has raised and donated thousands of ornamental trees for park, school and highway planting. Recently the club presented to the California highway commission for public use 1000 oak trees of several kinds. Most of these trees will be set out in Yolo, Sacramento and Tulare counties. The Monterey Tree-growing club is really only interested in the use of trees for soldier memorial purposes, but uses its good offices in encouraging high schools to organize tree clubs. The great value of trees both for beautification and utility makes the movement for active planting one that deserves energetic prosecution. Trees planted along highways not only furnish beauty and shade, but have a beneficial effect in protecting the concrete or macadam surface from excessive temperature changes. At its last meeting, the California highway commission received six inquiries about highway tree planting. The active prosecution of this work is being undertaken by the commission in co-operation with the state board of forestry and the local authorities interested.
