NOTES ABOUT THE OIL FIELDS
Items of Interest Gleaned From Southern California's Producing Fields and Progress Made.
At 2850 feet, just where the formation commenced showing a good sand that carried considerable gas in the Placentia Oil Company's well, drill pipe twisted off, leaving a drill collar and bit in the hole. As the fishing goes on the showing in the well seems to increase, giving it a very promising outlook.
The National Exploration Company recovered from the fishing job at Chino No. 1 and is now drilling again at 1300 feet. Drilling at Olinda No. 1 is now at 1410 feet in the brown shale. The cementing job at 1392 feet failed and a second attempt will be tried deeper.
At 3000 feet the Placentia Pacific Oil Company goes out of the hard conglomerate that has made a lot of slow drilling and struck the blue snake. At 3060 feet, the present depth of the well, the blue snake is still continuing and considerable oil and gas are now showing.
The Fullerton Oil Company is making a casing test on the Anaheim Union at 4065 feet. The cement will be drilled out and the oil sand drilled into before the end of the week. This is scheduled to be the biggest well the Fullerton Oil Company ever brought in the California field.
Failure to get much oil out of the mer weeks, but all interest seems to be centered in this unusual well. It is located on the Kirk lease, northeast or reservoir hill. It was drilling at 3120 feet and still some distance to go before the big sand pool is pierced. The drillers at the well reported that there was 800 pounds of gas pressure and the sediment which is being brought up has a tar-like appearance with a trace of oil. By all forms of geologic forecasts this well is ready to shoot should come in within the next four or five days.
There are three new rigs on the horizon of Huntington Beach. They are Standard Oil, Allied Petroleum and Sun Oil Company. The latter company has not yet completed its rig construction but will in a day or two, and it is anticipated that before many days the formal spudding date will be announced by President S.W. Mellon of Los Angeles. The Sun well is located right alongside of the Southern Pacific tracks and is half way between the Surf and Bolsa Chica wells.
The Standard Oil Company has 23 wells in the field; 12 of them are drilling, 5 are building rig and 6 are producing. Of those drilling the Surf well is down the deepest, being at the 3800-foot level, and the Standard No. 5 is at 2850 foot. The company has three wells cemented and one reamed. The latter well is the famous Standard A-3. It is located about 400 years before these...

Failure to get much oil out of the Richfield-Yorba well by the use of the air compressor and pumping has brought about a decision on the part of the management to drill deeper. The well was put on the pump several weeks ago at 3150 feet, but failed to produce, and the use of the air compressor has failed to raise the oil.
The Standard Oil Company has started work on the big Bastanchury ranch at Fullerton. The location for well No. 1 has been made and the rig is now going up.
It will be remembered that this property was partially developed by the Union Oil Company several years ago, but failed to give much production. The Union has abandoned the property and the Standard will now try a hand at developing oil if it is there.
Oil men who have recently made surveys here predict the next oil field to be opened up in Southern California will be found at Westminster. The Westminster Oil Company has started development work and has 500 feet of hole drilled.
The Garden Grove Petroleum Company, the second concern to get into the new work at Westminster is now getting material on the ground for a rig.
The Petroleum Midway brought in one of the big wells of the week at Richfield by putting Isaacs No. 1 on the pump a 450 barrel well. Drilled to 2940 feet, the Isaacs sprung something of a surprise and came in better than expected.
At Yarnell No. 2 the Petroleum Midway has decided to go deeper and duplicate Yarnell No. 1, now doing 500 barrels. Yarnell No. 4-A continues to be the big well of the property, halting steadily at 1200 barrels. The drilling on No. 9 is now at 950 and No. 12 at 3300 feet. Richfield No. 1 shows 3125 feet of hole, drilling in brown shale.
The Standard Oil Company has 23 wells in the field; 12 of them are drilling, 5 are building rig and 6 are producing. Of those drilling the Surf well is down the deepest, being at the 3800-foot level, and the Standard No. 5 is at 2850 foot. The company has three wells cemented and one recommented. The latter well is the famous Standard A-3. It is located about 400 feet north of the Discovery well and making a good flow of oil when something happened to the casing and the water broke in.
The well originally came in on Christmas morning and was put out of commission in about 48 hours. Those in charge of the work do not take the situation seriously, as they say that the work is comparatively easy now as they have been fishing now for three months to find it. Rotary tools have been put back on the job and the sand is being cleaned out.
The Union Oil Company has made a rotary record for the Huntington field by drilling Newlands No. 1 to 5000 feet without a mishap worth mentioning. The drilling is now being done with four-inch drill pipe and the achievement is attracting considerable attention on account of the fact that few holes are drilled to 5000 feet with the rotary. Careful work did the thing.
K. A. Hoxle, an old timer with the Union is in charge. By the way, the information is added that at 5000 feet Newlands No. 1 is drilling in hard shell and is not showing any oil or any signs of it.
Southern California's biggest producer is now at Huntington Beach in the Standard Oil Company's Bolsa No. 1, a well that is making all the way from 1800 to 2000 barrels daily. This great gusher, completed at 2550 feet, is producing 27 gravity oil. The oil is flowing quietly from the well and everything is doing nicely and under perfect control.
At 2040 feet Bolsa No. 3 struck the oil sands and is being cemented at that point. Striking the sand at such a shallow mark No. 3 should make a great well also.
Bolsa No. 2 is drilling at 2100 feet in the shale.
Huntington A-3, the 1000-barrel well is still standing cemented, but will be opened up in a few days. A-7 is drilling in the oil sand at 2400 feet. A-8 is testing water at 1900 feet. A-9 is right alongside of the Southern Pacific tracks and is half way between the Surf and Bolsa Chica wells.

Four billion dollar $126 year in California
At Yarnell No. 2 the Petroleum Midway has decided to go deeper and duplicate Yarnell No. 1, now using 500 barrels. Yarnell No. 4-A continues to be the big well of the property, halting steadily at 1200 barrels. The drilling on No. 9 is now at 950 and No. 12 at 3300 feet. Richfield No. 1 shows 3125 feet of hole, drilling in brown shale.
The Petroleum Midway is rushing work rapidly on the Krugg property, Krugg No. 1 is dilling at 2000 feet. No. 2 is down 200 feet and a rig is being completed for No. 3.
The richest oil sand ever found in and oil well in this or any other field in Southern California has been unearthed in the Union Oil Company's Stearns No. 57. The rich sand began showing at 1200 feet and at the present depth of 1525 this same sand continues.
The finding of such a rich oil sand at the shallow depth mentioned probably means that the new Union will be a record breaker when it comes in.
The Union is rushing other new work as rapidly as possible. Grades are being made for five wells. A new rig is up for Nos. 55 and 56 Union's No. 58, the last big well to be brought in in the Brea canyon district, is holding steadily at 1400 barrels a day. No. 59 brought in four months ago is still doing better than 1000 barrels.
The oil drilling fans of the beach town are waiting to see what the Republic Petroleum will do. There is not much stir here, compared with for-
At 2040 feet Bolsa No.
A-9 is drilling at 500 feet. A-10 is a new location.
Drilling on B-2 is at 2100 feet in the shale. B-3 is drilling at 500 feet.
Surf No. 1 still stands cemented and Torrance No. 1 is cleaning out at 3800 feet.
The Union Oil Company's deep test well at San Juan Capistrano has just turned the 4000-foot mark without showing enough oil to grease the hinges of a pair of spectacles. The chances are now rather doubtful.
At Brea canyon on the Tonner property, the General Petroleum's next producer will be No. 6, now drilling at 3425 feet and showing up strong. Redrilling on No. 5 has reached 3424 feet and Nos. 11, 12, and 13 are standing cemented at 1200 feet each.
The Selby-Root-Hogue Oil Company cemented Wardman No. 1 at 3045 feet, after getting a very nice showing of oil. Since cementing the surface water come up around the stovepipe casing and now the well looks like an artesian water well. The flow of water will probably quit in a few days.

LANSING FLAYS LEAGUE
IN HIS PARIS DIARY
Instrument of Mighty to Enthral the Weaker Nations, He Says For First Tnme
Robert Lansing, former Secretary of State, until dismissed by President Wilson for calling meetings of the cabinet when his chief was physically unable to do so, has given his honest opinion of the peace treaty and league of nations covenant as recorded in his diary in Paris and just published. He says:
"The terms of the peace were yesterday delivered to the German plant-potentiaries, and for the first time in these days of feverish rush of preparation there is time to consider the treaty as a complete document.
"The league of nations created by the treaty is relied upon to preserve the artificial structure which has been ceased by compromise of the conflicting interests of the Great Powers and to prevent the germination of the seeds of war which are sown in so many articles and which under normal conditions would soon bear fruit. The league might as well attempt to prevent the growth of plant life in a tropical jungle. Wars will come sooner or later.
"It must be admitted in honesty that the league is an instrumentality of the mighty to check the normal growth of national power and national aspirations among those who have been rendered impotent by defeat. Examine the treaty and you will find peoples delivered against their will into the hands of those whom they hate, while their economic resources are torn from them and given to others. Resentment and bitterness, if not desperation, are bound to be the consequences of such provisions. It may be years before these oppressed peoples are able to throw off the woke but..."
the mighty to check the normal growth of national power and national aspirations among those who have been rendered impotent by defeat. Examine the treaty and you will find peoples delivered against their will into the hands of those whom they hate, while their economic resources are torn from them and given to others. Resentment and bitterness, if not desperation, are bound to be the consequences of such provisions. It may be years before these oppressed peoples are able to throw off the yoke but as sure as day follows night the time will come when they will make the effort.
"This war was fought by the United States to destroy forever the conditions which produced it. Those conditions have not been destroyed but have been supplanted by other conditions equally productive of hatred, jealousy and suspicion. In place of the Triple Alliance and the Entente has arisen the Quintuple Alliance which is to rule the world. The victors in this war intend to impose their combined will upon the vanquished and to subordinate all interests to their own.
"It is true that to please the aroused public opinion of mankind and to respond to the idealism of the moralist they have surrounded the new alliance with a halo and called it "the league of nations," but whatever it may be called or however it may be disguised it is an alliance of the Five Great Military Powers.
"It is useless to close our eyes to the fact that the power to compel obedience by the exercise of the united strength of the five is the fundamental principal of the league, Justice is secondary. Might is primary.
"The league as now constituted will be the prey of greed and intrigue, and the law of unanimity of the council, which may offer restraint, will be broken or rendered the organization powerless. It is called upon to stamp as just what is unjust.
"We have a treaty of peace, but it will not bring permanent peace because it is founded upon the shiftless sands of self-interest.
"The obnoxious things in the treaty were due to secret diplomacy. The President should have stuck rigidly to his principles, which he has not."

CALIFORNIA REALTY
Four billion dollars worth of real estate paid $120,000,000 taxes last year in California for municipal and county purposes according to Fred B. Reed, president of the California Real Estate Association.
Reed declares that the burden of taxation carried by real estate is 85 per cent of the total collected for the operation of counties and municipalities, the remaining 15 per cent being borne by license fees, fines and personal property, the latter being a very minor proportion.
"The physician and lawyer in our communities with an income of 25,-000 dollars a year pay practically no tax whatever, although they receive just as many benefits from most of the functions of community government as do the largest property owners in our state," says Reed. It is the intention of our State Real Estate association to investigate such a condition as this and to suggest a remedy to our legislators at Sacramento during their present session.
"The unequal burden of taxation borne by real estate is best illustrated in New York City, where up to a short time ago six billion dollars worth of real estate paid 95 per cent of the taxes, while sixty billion dollars in personal property paid only the other five. The New York state income tax brought about an adjustment of this condition. It has been demonstrated success."
Said work to be done and materials furnished shall be in accordance with the plans and specifications therefor, which said plans and specifications are marked and designated "Number 6, Sewer System, Anaheim, California. Profiles. O. E. Steward, City Engr. 1921" and were adopted by the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim on the 10th day of March, 1921, and are on file in the office of the City Clerk of said city.
Bldders must enclose with their bids certified checks on a responsible bank equal in amount to ten per cent of the amount of their respective bids payable to the president of the Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim, as a guarantee of good faith on the part of the bidder that he will enter into a contract and give the bond required and in case the bidder fails to sign the contract and give satisfactory bond within ten days after the contract is awarded to him, said check shall become the property of the City of Anaheim as a liquidation of the damages and incurred expenses.
When the contract is signed and bond accepted the check will be returned to the successful bidder, and all other checks will be returned as soon as the contract is awarded or bids refused.
The Board of Trustees of the City of Anaheim reserves the right to reject any and all bids. Dated this 15th day of March, 1921.
