CITRUS GROWERS ENJOY ANNUAL PICNIC
OUTING OF ANAHEIM CITRUS FRUIT ASSOCIATION ATTENDED BY SIX HUNDRED
Manager Schureman Announces New Packing House Will Probably be Built to Accommodate Increasing Business—Association Now Controls More Than 2500 Acres of Oranges—500 Acres Added Since November
That Anaheim, which is in the heart of the great and expanding Valencia belt, will eventually be the most important citrus shipping point in California, is the opinion of men whose business it is to keep posted on the orange industry, and to know the developments in all sections. The growth of the Anaheim district within the past few years is without parallel and expansion during the coming decade will untoubtdly be more rapid than it has been in the past. The Valencia, although a comparatively new fruit here, is acknowledged to be the year had been an exceedingly prosperous one, excellent crop being harvested and high prices received for the fruit.
On the shoulders of Director George A. Mills rested the responsibility of feeding the multitude of stockholders and members of their families who were in attendance. Mills was appointed head of the commissary at the first banquet held many years ago, and made himself so popular on that occasion that he has never been able to sidestep the job. In those early days of the association's history, he says, he would carry grub enough in his coat pockets to feed all who attended, but he came very near being rattled Saturday when he was confronted by 600 hungry ranchers and rancheretts, all clamoring for grub. Mills and his assistant, W. H. Rockwell, were equal to the oscasion, however, their larder apparently being as inexhaustible as the widow's cruise.

The ne packing houses which have been built in this city during the past few years emphasizes more than anything else the increased output of this district. Two years ago the Anaheim Orange and Lemon Association completed and took possession of its new home on South Los Angeles street. This is acknowledged to be the finest packing house in the state and, anticipating increased business, it was so constructed that an extension on the east end, carrying it through to Claudia na street, will double its capacity. Last fall the Anaheim Orange Growers Association, having outgrown its quarters on the Santa Fe, erected a splendid new structure on the Southern Pacific tracks at the Lincoln avenue crossing on the westside, and is now operating both houses.
And now it is announced that the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Association, the parent co-operative association of the city, is preparing to construct a magnificent new house in order to accommodate increasing business. Three years ago this house found itself in considerable of a dilemma. It had outgrown its quarters and was still swelling. Stockholders were adding to their acreage and other growers were knocking for admission, and there was no room on the site to add to the buildings. Congestion was relieved for the time being by a division. Certain members withdrew and organized the Anaheim Orange and Lemon Association. Manager Sandilands went with them and took charge of the new house, and W. H. Schureman was elected head of the old association.
But the relief was only temporary. The business has grown so rapidly that the house is much too small for the present needs and will be wholly inadequate for handling the crops of future years. At the annual picnic given by the association at county
ANAHEIM TEAM WINS
FIRST OF THE SERIES
Long Beach Defeated in Hot Game by 4 to 2 Score
A hundred or more Long Beach rooters came up with the Elks ball team from the beach city Sunday with the fell purpose of assisting that team to win the first game in the contest for the state championship. The rooters were full to the neck with enthusiasm and noise, but they had no opportunity to uncork themselves and give vent to their feelings until the seventh inning.
As a matter of fact the fateful seventh was the only inning in the game worth mentioning. There were eight other chapters, but they were tame and uninteresting. It was evident after the first inning that Salveson, who was on the mound for Anaheim, had the visitors eating out his hand, and could handle them just as he pleased. It was not necessary for the locals to exert themselves, consequently for six innings there was not much noise or excitement, the leather-lunged beachites being as mute as oysters. In the seventh, however, Herb grew careless and allowed a couple of hits, putting two men on bases. Then Etchandy grabbed an infield grounder and slammed it at first, but the first baseman wasn't there and the ball passed on. Herb was so dazed over this that he permitted the next batter to single into left field, which brought in two runs, tieing the score and giving the beachites the first glimmer of joy they had yet experienced. But their joy was of short duration. In the second half of the seventh, with two men on bases, Oscar Schneider drove a single directly over the short stop's head, advancing the men and filling the bases. Then Fayette Lewis followed Oscar's example, scoring two men. No more runs were made, the final score standing 4 to 2.
This was the first in a series of games for the state championship of the Elks leagues. There are three leagues—north, central and south—and winners of the pennants will play in the finals at Sacramento. The Anaheim team will play six games, three of them on the home grounds. A week from Sunday they will meet Pomona and Ontario team here. Under the rules all the players must be members.

But the relief was only temporary. The business has grown so rapidly that the house is much too small for the present needs and will be wholly inadequate for handling the crops of future years. At the annual picnic given by the association at county park Saturday, Manager Schureman announced that the directors contemplated the construction of a new house, which will probably be built on the Santa Fe right of way. It is expected—in fact, it is necessary that this building be completed in time for handling next season's crop, as the present building will be much too small.
In his report Mr. Schoreman stated that the association now controls 2535 acres of oranges, 1823 acres being in full bearing trees, and 252 acres being four-year-olds. Five hundred acres were added to the association since last November.
Manager Schureman's report was, of course, the most important and interesting feature of the meeting as it told of accomplishment of the past and hopes of the future, but interesting talks were made by Dale R. King, manager of the Northern Orange County Exchange, and Dana King, sales manager of the California Fruit Exchange. Directors C. E. Jones, Charles Eygabroad and W. H. Rockwell, as well as other members, also made short addresses. J. J. Dwyer, president of the association, presided at the business session. It was an enjoyable gathering, as reports showed the past

G. W. Sundilands, manager of the Anaheim Orange and Lemon Growers association estimates that this year's Valencia crop will bring into this city three million dollars. He also predicts that within ten years Anaheim will be shipping from 5000 to 7000 cars of fruit annually. Mr. Sandilands has always been optimistic in his prophecies, but development has invariably more than justified his predictions.

After the meeting that was held in the Valencia hotel when the old Anaheim Board of Trade was made to die and the new Anaheim Chamber of Commerce was given birth, I was asked by a prominent Anaheim business man what the difference was between A board of trade and A chamber of commerce, the expression being made by the questioner that no difference was observable. There is a difference, though. It is as follows:
A board of trade may be composed of commerce is to get behind, and also initiate, movements that have as their objects those improvements that are good for the prosperous growth of the town, considered as a whole. Such movements may be the paving of streets, establishing a building line, a bus line, a car line, a sewer system, a lighting system, so on and so forth of this nature. Anything that is of benefit to the town as a whole is generally what chambers of commerce boost.
A chamber of commerce does not stop at boosting its own town, but lends a hand to the surrounding community, working under the principle that what helps one helps all. For instance, the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce not only boosts Los Angeles, but has boosted the county, the surrounding counties, and the state.
From a tourist standpoint, a boost by the new Anaheim Chamber of Commerce is needed in some kind of a public drive to make known in the nearby towns how to get to the county park, the beaches, and other resorts. FROM Anaheim as the HUB of this district of Orange county. Anaheim is getting big, very big, and there are hundreds of strangers within its borders who are at a loss as to where it is and where is that, and how to get thither and yonder. FROM Anaheim as a central point. Some means whereby, not only distant strangers, but near strangers can be informed as to what Anaheim

A board of trade may be composed only of a certain class of people. A chamber of commerce is generally composed of all classes of people.
Various classes of merchants such as jewelry dealers, shoe dealers, barbers, bankers, etc., may form an organization of people doing business along certain lines, such as a jewelry board of trade, a shoe dealers' board of trade, a barbers' organization, a bankers' association, etc. The function of these definite class boards, associations or organizations, is to advance the interests of the particular business bearing the name of the association. Of course, other topics may be taken up by a definite board of trade, but the main function is to look after a given business. So, a board of trade for a city has a limited aspect to it, it is not inclusive of all interests in a city.
A chamber of commerce is generally an organization of classes and interests in a city to advance the GENERAL welfare of the city. No specific line of business is concentrated upon for advancement; no certain class of people are looked after to the omission of others. But, all kinds of businesses and all classes of people are advanced with the GENERAL advancement of the city as a whole.
Persons engaged in a certain business may still have their own limited organization for their own special purpose, and still they may be members of the more inclusive chamber of commerce that looks after the welfare of the city as a whole.
A chamber of commerce is not limited in its membership to just business people. As a rule, business men predominate, because, they, as a class, get the major benefits of thriving communities. However, professional people non-business men, ministers, club-women, etc., are members of chambers of commerce. A chamber of commerce admits to its membership anyone who is interested in the progress of a city,
drive to make known in the nearby towns how to get to the county park, the beaches, and other resorts. FROM Anaheim as the HUB of this district of Orange county. Anheim is getting big, very big, and there are hundreds of strangers within its borders who are at a loss as to where is this and where is that, and how to get thither and yonder. FROM Anaheim as a central point. Some means whereby, not only distant strangers, but near strangers can be informed as to what Anaheim contains in the lake of business, factories, pleasure resorts, transportation, living phases, and so forth, and these things to be CONTINUALLY before the public eye. These things can now be found out by searching for them, but A function of A chamber of commerce is to make these things obviously known.
I have asked long-time residents of this town how to get there and how to go thither. I was surprised at the lack of knowledge people in Anaheim have of the place they have lived in for years. For instance, I had a hard job finding out concretely and definitely a definite, straight, quick route to the county park. FROM Anaheim, as a central point of embarkation. If Anaheim desires to be the hub of the county, let people in Anaheim be a walking bureau of knowledge. Chambers of commerce elsewhere educate the people of the their own community as well as the people of distant communities.
A function of A chamber of commerce is not only to create business, but also to help make the citizens of a town happy and contented by boosting other features other than what may be termed a straight business idea. For instance, a quick, definite, direct, reliable line of transportation to a beach resort is one semi-business venture that A chamber of commerce could boost for the general public of a city.
Then there are things of the esthetic side of a community that chambers of commerce are wont to obtain for a town, such as colleges, schools, institutions, churches and fine residence tracts, the latter to attract the retired business man to enjoy his retired life in a progressive and healthy-minded town.
In short, the function of A chamber of commerce is to boost anything that brings people, money, prosperity and happiness to a community along legitimate avenues by an application of
maintain a garage for automobile repairing within certain prescribed sections of Anaheim—that is, within what is denominated as the residence districts. Ordinance No. 382, defining the prohibited area, was adopted by the city trustees Thursday night. It is printed on the sixth page of this paper, and if you want to learn the territory in which it is permissible to build a garage, read the ordinance.
An ordinance directing the establishment of a uniform grade for paved alleys was introduced and read the first time, and the city attorney was directed to draft an ordinance prohibiting dumping of ice on the sidewalks.
Mrs. Homer G. Ames, whose term as a director of the public library having expired, declined to further serve on the board, consequently Miss Alice Grimshaw was appointed to the position. Miss E. Kate Rea, who has served many years as clerk of the library board, was reappointed.
A report from the county clerk was received recommending that the library be transferred to the jurisdiction of the county, was received, but no action taken. It was referred to the library committee.
A check for $568.31 was received from the Southern Counties Gas company the amount of franchise tax due the city for the past year.
An appropriation of $500 for the benefit of the Elks band was voted on a motion by F. N. Gibbs. This is to pay for public concerts which will be given during the summer months.
Paving of alleys by private contracts between the property owners and the paving company was under discussion, and Manager Steward was empowered to make all sewer connections before the paving was laid down; property owners to pay the expenses.
Application of Theodore Roberts for permission to construct a driveway across the sidewalk on West Center street was refused; on the ground that so many school children pass that point to and from school.
The railroad commission recommended that a representation of the board attend a meeting of the commission on July 5, when the telephone matter will be heard. As nobody volunteered to go, it is probably Anaheim will not be represented at the hearing.
GOPHERED TREES CAN BE KEPT
A chamber of commerce is not limited in its membership to just business people. As a rule, business men predominate, because, they, as a class, get the major benefits of thriving communities. However, professional people non-business men, ministers, club women, etc., are members of chambers of commerce. A chamber of commerce admits to its membership anyone who is interested in the progress of a city, be what and who they may. The main qualification is to have the "boost" spirit.
At the last chamber of commerce meeting in this city I heard remarks like this: "We business men." That may have been alright in the old board of trade, but it is out of order in A chamber of commerce, because A chamber of commerce is generally composed of all classes of citizen-boosters of a community.
The general function of A chamber of commerce is to let the world know the town is on the map. The methods of performing this stunt are various and many, which methods the chamber inaugurates and attends to their successful accomplishment.
Another function is to get people to live in a community through advertising campaigns and other ways. Also to get businesses to locate in the community. A paramount function of A chamber of commerce is to endeavor to introduce industries and factories to locate in the city, so as to back up the inhabitants and business of the town with a stable source of work to keep the people busy, and in turn to keep the business life of the city in a prosperous condition.
Another function of A chamber of commerce are wont to obtain for a town, such as colleges, schools, institutions, churches and fine residence tracts, the latter to attract the retired business man to enjoy his retired life in a progressive and healthy-minded town.
In short, the function of A chamber of commerce is to boost anything that brings people, money, prosperity and happiness to a community along legitimate avenues by an application of well-known psychological principles.
GOPHER POISON READY
The county horticultural commission has prepared strychhine and sixcharine poison in the correct proportions for the most eective and convenient use in poisoning gophers. It may be bought for cost from the main office in the county court house or from any of the inspectors in their respective divisions, as follows:
Earl Morris, commissioner, Santa Ana.
M. J. Pickering, La Habra.
S. S. Collins, Anaheim.
George Wardwell, Huntington Beach.
Fred Quigley, Yorba Linda.
The poison is sold in pepper cans in three sizes for 25 cents, 50 cents and $1 respectively. The cans are perforated for sprinkling the powder on the bait to be used.
Marriage licenses were issued last week to Gaspard J. Rudolf and Thresa J. Hausladen, both of Anaheim, Joseph C. Elliott of Los Angeles and Edna Mae Schlotter of this city, and Donald J. Andrews of Anaheim and Rachel R. Hughes of Beaver, Pa.
Hundreds of trees that have been damaged by gophers this season could have been saved if treated in time. In practically every case, trees that have been girdled, if taken in time can be brought back to normal by proper treatment. Seventy per cent of the damaged trees can be saved by merely painting over the wounds with an air-tight preparation such as paro-wax. The wound must be treated soon after it was made so as not to dry out too much. If allowed to dry excessively the remaining cambium cells will stop functioning and no new tissue will grow on again. Oftimes merely the application of the paro-wax coating is sufficient to induce a new bark growth. However, where the work of the gopher has been of too long standing, bridge grafting must be resorted to. This process can be done by the average farmer with a little patience and diligence. The main factors in making a union of scion and stock are first, the ready slipping of the bark when the incisions are made; second, the waxing of scion and all exposed portions of the graft and wound; third, the tying of the scion so as to make it substantial and solidly seated. A loose scion will not make a union.
A PAIR OF CANDIDATES FOR SUPERVISOR
William Schumacher and John H. Cook Announce Their selves
William Schumacher of Buena Park, who, for the past eight years has served as member of the board of supervisors from the third district, has announced his candidacy for re-nomination at the primary election on August 31. Fred A. Backs, Jr., was appointed Monday to circulate Mr. Schumacher's nomination papers.
Eight years ago Mr. Schumacher ran a close race for the office with John Brunworth, defeating his opponent by one vote. By his untiring work in behalf of the district he made himself so popular during his term that he had no opposition for re-election four years ago, all parties endorsing him. During his two terms he has worked loyally for the district and in the distribution of such favors as he was able to get he has been impartial, all sections being benefited. He has made few if any enemies during his eight years' service.
But Mr. Schumacher will have an opponent this year, and a merry race is on. John H. Cook of Anaheim, also announced his candidacy for the office Monday, L. W. Bushard being in charge of his campaign. There is no man in the district who could make a stronger race against Mr. Schumacher.
MUST CONSERVE EVERY DROP OF WATER
LIFE OF CITRUS INDUSTRY ABSOLUTELY DEPENDENT UPON ADEQUATE SUPPLY
Speaker at Citrus Institute Declares That Growers Are Facing Big Problem—Increasing Demand for Water Makes Conservation Imperative—Favors More Check Dams and Reservoirs
Citrus growers of Southern California, more than the men and women in any other industry, are absolutely dependent upon irrigation water, and for that reason they must lead the fight in conservation of water, was declared at the California citrus institute at Santa Ana Thursday night.
"Save every drop that falls," was the admonition that was given by W. S. Jones, civil engineer, whose home is at Claremont.
Engineer Jones' address upon the conservation of water was given fol-
A GREAT PICTURE
Rex Beach's great story, "The Silver Horde," is being shown in pictures at the Fairyland Wednesday and Thursday nights of this week. It is an Alaskas story—a great picture—and is full of thrills from beginning to end.
They had thrown down the gauntlet to the challenge of the Wall Street Octopus.
There were three of them, two men and a woman—strong, masterful, imbued with the raw elemental courage and strength that is the heritage of those who have lived loved and fought in the grim, bleak wastes of the Alaskan snow country.
Wall Street had vowed to break them—to trick them out of a vast fortune that was rightfully theirs. All the cunning; all the trickery; all the money at Wall Street's command was thrown into one mighty effort to crush the valiant children of the snows.
It was the cunning of Wall Street against the might of the north.
And the fight that followed resounded with the clash of mighty fists; bibrated with the unleashed passions of strong men fighting for fortune and the love of a woman.
But Mr. Schumacher will have an opponent this year, and a merry race is on. John H. Cook of Anaheim, also announced his candidacy for the office Monday, L. W. Bushard being in charge of his campaign. There is no man in the district who could make a stronger race against Mr. Schumacher than John Cook. He has served as city trustee a couple of terms and one term as mayor of Anaheim, and during his incumbency he demonstrated that the will of the people was law to him and their interests paramount. He is well known throughout northern Orange county, and everybody recognizes his fitness for the office of supervisor. He is a rancher, a large property owner, and a capable business man. He is a native Californian and has lived in Anaheim many years. This section of the county would not suffer should he be chosen to represent it on the county board.
"Save every drop that falls," was the admonition that was given by W. S. Jones, civil engineer, whose home is at Claremont.
Engineer Jones' address upon the conservation of water was given following the citrus institute banquet, which was a marked success. The banquet was essentially a social affair at which the growers had opportunity to get better acquainted with each other.
Jones' address was illustrated with lantern slides, in which pictures of check dams, reservoirs, water spreading works, cross sections of valleys and other matters discussed in the lecture were illustrated.
Most of Jones' talk had to do directly with the water conservation work that has been done at Haynes, San Antonio and other canyons of the Sierra Madres, but conditions there are the same as are found in the San Bernardino and Santa Ana mountains from which the Orange county water supply largely comes.
Jones declared that citrus growers have a big problem of irrigation to face. With increasing demand for water, with the possibility of shortages the conservation of waters is one that should be met intelligently and soon.
"There are two methods of conservation," said he. "First, through economy of use; second, by preventing loss by run-off."
There are a great many irrigationists who use far more water than they need. There are lots of citrus growers who really damage their groves by using too much water. Study of irrigation with a view to determining the best distribution is of big importance to you."
In his discussion, Jones first declared that the watershed covering is of such importance that every effort should be put forth to prevent its ruin by forest fires.
"The forest service is handicapped by lack of forces to handle big fires," said he. "It has not been allowel sufficient funds to keep an adequate number of trained men on hand. There remains but one thing for the residents of the valleys to do, and that is to organize fire-fighting forces to be used

Fights! Action! Thrills! Well, Rex Beach wrote it and it is one of his most powerful stories. It's red-blooded, "he-man," two-fisted, straight-from-the-shoulder romance and you'll want to see it.
There is every reason to believe that Fullerton will show an increase of at least 140 per cent in population since the federal census of 1910. The returns of the present census have not been announced. It was hoped that the town would come close to the 5000 class but some "inside stuff" points to a total of about 4,100. While this is in the nature of a disappointment to the more optimistic, it will yet be a most favorable showing when the percentage of growth is taken into consideration. In 1910 Fullerton had a population of 1725, according to the census report. On a basis of 4100 for 1920 the percentage of gain will be 143 per cent, plus. Anaheim's percentage of gain is 110 per cent and all towns which equal or surpass the 100 per cent increase mark are counted in the rapidly growing class. If Fullerton keeps up its stride, as there is every indication it will, it will be quite a sizeable town when the time for the next federal census rolls round.
The forest service is handicapped by lack of forces to handle big fires," said he. "It has not been allowel sufficient funds to keep an adequate number of trained men on hand. There remains but one thing for the residents of the valleys to do, and that is to organize fire-fighting forces to be used in co-operation with the forest service. There must be chosen leaders who known the lay of the land, arrangements for quickly getting forces of men, for transporting of food and water. Along the Sierra Madre range we have perfected just such an organization. It behooves other parts of Southern California to do likewise."
The check dam system of holding back water was clearly depicted with pictures taken from Haynes and San Antonio canyons. Ater spreading was given extensive attention. Underground storage was pointed out as of great consequence as in most localities o this part of the state at least, eighty per cent of the irrigation water used comes from the underground reservoirs.
He said that there are a number of very fine reservoir sites in San Bernardino and Orange counties that may be utilized in an extensive program that some day must be entertained into for the saving of water. The use of reservoirs was declared of big consequence.
