"The employer must come to realize that the underpaid man cannot do himself justice when his wage is not sufficient to permit him and his family to live under the standard, and the employee must come to realize that it is his duty to give his employer the best he has—to be efficient in his service and to work in the interest of the employer.By doing this both will prosper and both will be helped and both will have a higher regard for each other." PRACTICAL COURSE IN OIL PRODUCTION Fullerton High School to Add Department to its Studies The Fullerton union high school is arranging to offer a thorough and practical course in oil production. In keeping with this plan the high school trustees have decided to visit the Standard Oil refinery at El Segundo to get first hand knowledge as to what will be necessary in the way of equipment and other necessary preparations. L.E.Plummer,supervising principal, who will accompany the board, says it was no easy matter to get permission to visit this institution and that the necessary authorization had to come from high up officials in the Standard Oil councils, but it was finally obtained and the trip will be made April 22. COUNTY MEAT CUTTERS WANT SHORTER HOURS Union Suggests Opening at 7:30 and Closing at 6 p.m. That the day of still shorter hours for the meat cutters of Orange county is dawning and that the movement for late opening and early closing is gaining in favor among the employing butchers is indicated by reports coming in from all parts of the county, as made at the dinner meeting of the meat cutter's union held at James' cafe, Santa Ana. Thirty-five or forty men of the county gathered at the festal board for the regular meeting, the number being composed of cutters, employers and representatives of the employers. The cutters are working for shorters hours, suggesting opening at 7:30 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m., except on Saturday nights, when the shops will colse at 7 o'clock. The ruling hours of today, shorter than ever before in the history of butcher shops in Orange county, according to report, is proving satisfactory, and the new proposed it is believed, will be just as satisfactory, it being a matter of educating the public to buying within the hours. Committee were appointed from different communities to take up with the employers the matter of the proposed hours and report at the next meeting, to be held soon. The committees are as follows: Anaheim—C.F.Oelke,R.Lazzeroni,Wm.Schumacher. Fullerton—W.Morgan,E.A.Feuquay,Fred L.Krieger. Orange—H.Eckman,L.Lane. Santa Ana—Chas Arkland,B.H.Schuhardt Leonard Brown. It is planned that the course will be both theoretical and practical. The theoretical side goes,of course, and chemistry and may be obtained wherever proper apparatus and instructors are available but Fullerton has peculiar advantages so far as the practical side in concerned since this district is one of the big producers of California and there are numerous wells, not only in the union high school districtbut also inside the Fullerton city limits. Boys who intend to enter the oil industry will find this course of great value and it will bring students here from a wide area. The dinner was complimentary to the "boss butchers" of the county and the feature of the evening was an address on cooperation of the employe and employer by Attorney Griffith Jones of Los Angeles. The speaker urged the members to be conservative and always to bear in mind that the "other fellow" had some rights and warned against permitting radicals to dominate the actions of the union. "Labor troubles of the past have been due to lack of consideration by both the employer and the employee," declared the speaker. "The time has come when both sides must take into consideration the interests of the other," continued Jones. "Cooperation of employe and employer is the solution to the labor troubles. I believe in the rights of labor men to organize as well as the capitalist or employers." "The greatest foe to unionism today is the foreign agitator—the man who goes from state to state, taking the ignorant men and working them into hysteria over imaginative wrongs. Radicals should not be permitted to dominate the organization." "The individual member must use his own brains—do his own thinking and not permit the agitator to think for him. The Yorba Linda Water company is about to receive a "present" of $7.000 in real United States money, as a result of a decision of the directors to lease the company's oil rights on the two main reservoir sites of the company for drilling purposes. There are approximately 171.2 acres altogether, and the lease goes to Oscar Howard, independent oil operator. Howard offered $400 per acre cash out the lease and $100 per acre out of the first oil produced, as a bonus and after lengthy negotiations the water company officials voted to accept the offer. Howard already holds a number of leases in the Yorba Linda field. FOR SALE 73 ACRES 73 ACRES of First Class Orange and, with ranch house buildings, pumping plant, e lines, etc. quire O. E.
