A dinner was given at Masonic club rooms Saturday evening at which Mr. and Mrs. Harry D. Riley were host and hostess. Nearly sixty guests were present and after dinner the evening was spent in playing cards, dancing, etc. Recently a Los Angeles paper, as a matter of news, announced the presence of 125 millionaires in Pasadena, giving their names and occupations. "Just for fun" we classified them and found that five were interested in mines, six in grain, seven in steel products, eight in oil, eight in the auto industry, nine in lumber; eleven were merchants and fifteen manufacturers; one was a publisher and thirteen were bankers. Anyone wishing to trade a bank for a perfectly good newspaper kindly communicate with the Courier.—Placentia Courler. Manager Ingram of the Grand theater is giving the public some high-class productions. Rev. C. B. Hatch, some weeks ago, was notified that he had been selected as one of the men upon whom would be conferred the degree of Doctor of Divinity at the commencement exercises of the University of Pittsburgh on June 1. In order to receive the degree it would be necessary for him to attend the exercises, which made his acceptance somewhat uncertain, as Pittsburgh is a long way from Anaheim. Las week the Los Angeles Presbytery elected Mr. Hatch a delegate to the general assembly of the Presbyterian church which meets in Philadelphia on May 20, thus giving him two missions in the state of Pennsylvania on very convenient dates. On his return from the assembly he can stop at Pittsburgh and receive the honor extended to him. The Los Angeles Presbytery also elected S. C. Hartranft of the Anaheim church, a lay delegate to the general assembly, thus doubling the honor bestowed on the local church. Mrs. William McCullom, who has been visiting friends in Iowa for some months past, returned home the first of the week. Mrs. Hannah Mathis died at her home on Broadway Saturday. Funeral was held at Backs & Terry's Tuesday afternoon, interment in Fairhaven cemetery, Santa Ana. F. A. YUNGBLUTH "By All Means Get a Fit." Home of Hart Schaffner & Marx clothes Local Notes J. T. Simmons, who owns and operates an auto truck line between Los Angeles, Fullerton, Anaheim and Orange, has asked the railroad commission for authority to sell his operating permit and equipment to W. H. McGann and H. J. Morgan. The orange tortrix has made itself interesting enough in certain parts of this county to attract the attention or orange growers this season. Usually the damage done by this insect has not warranted the application of special poison sprays to control it, but a combination spray used at this time of the year when red spider is prevalent, is being tried by Prof. Quayle of the citrus experiment station. Prof. Quayle is cooperating with several growers near Anaheim and Fullerton in spraying experiments. Arsenate of lead is used with the ordinary two per cent lime sulphur solution generally used for red spider control. The arsenate of lead is a stomach poison acting upon the tortrix larvae as it bores into the fruit or eats the young leaf growth. Sprays were applied by Prof. Quayle in W. M. Wellman's grove, east of Anaheim, the Royer, Redmonds, and Sandilands groves at Anaheim. Mrs. Malda Sherantano of Placentia was released Thursday from custody under $1000 ball following her arraignment before Justice of the Peace Cox on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit murder on her father, Martin Epson, aged Placentia rancher. Mrs. Sherantano is said to have fired four shots at her aged parent as he sat in an automobile in the center of the Placentia business district. The trouble is believed to When furs to the value of $27,000,000 can be sold at auction in a few days in one of our large cities, it cannot be said that the high peak of extravagance has yet been reached. We doubt that if this country of ours was ever more prosperous, and yet there is much discontent, and the more one makes the more they wish and spend, and so what is going to be the outcome of it all? The one who lays aside for a rainy day is the one that will emerge from the break when it does come, in good condition. There is no excuse for this wild extravagence, and when one tells you that he cannot save on the princely salaries he is making, put him down as a money-mad spendthrift, for there are just as good opportunities now to save as there ever was. The temptation may be to spend more, but use your head and confine yourselves to sane living, and watch the results. The rainfall in this city during the storm last week was .62 of an inch, making the total for the season 17.65, according to the gauge at the sugar factory. Anaheim is the wettest spot in the county, being one inch ahead of Fullerton, the next wettest town. Madeline Moore celebrated her ninth birthday on Saturday and invited a number of her young friends to her home on North Philadelphia street to spend the afternoon in playing games. Ice cream and cake was served. Those present as Madeline's guests were Rawlin Golter, Burton Goodrich, Florence Backs, Grace Crawford, Bernice Ingraham, Edith Alexander, Margaret Bock, Margaret Brenner and Vaughn Nelmann. ENTERTAIN AT CARD PARTY Mrs. C. E. Holcomb and Miss Dora Zeyn were the hostesses at a delightful card party at their home on Commonwealth avenue, Fullerton, Thursday afternoon. About 30 guests were present and the downpour of rain served only to accentuate the contrast with the scene of pleasure and good cheer within this hospitable home. Sweet peas and roses adorned the rooms and lent an air of springtime brightness to the scene. The game was 500 and prizes of cut glass vases were awarded to Mrs. Dyer, Mrs. Backs and Mrs. Krause. After the game a delicious two-course collation was served. The guests from Anaheim were Mesdames J. F. Ahlborn, G. W. Sandilands, H. M. Adams, W. J. Cole, J. J. Dwyer, R. Melrose, F. A. Backs, Jr., Welborn Wallop, F. C. Benjamin, F. A. Yungbluth, F. C. Rimpau, H. Kuchel, E. Turck, J. Hartung, J. Carroll; Misses Sophie and Marle Rimpau, Winifred Melrose and Alice Robinson; from Stanton, Mesdames L. C. Deming, J. H. Swan; from Hollywood, Mrs. Marsh; from Los Angeles, Mesdames J. Hetterman, W. Lawrence, C. Hedges, Stephens, Miss Annie Everhardy; from Long Beach, Mrs. Harry Dyer; from Fullerton, Mesdames Davies, F. C. Krause, A. V. Smith, Edgar Johnson, A. S. Bradford; from Santa Fe Springs, Mesdames A. L. Lewis, P. J. Weisel. County taxes become delinquent next Monday night. If you have not yet settled with the tax collector bear this in mind. Fullerton voters defeated all members of the city council who were standing for reelection last month Mrs. The trouble is believed to be the outgrowth of family troubles involving the financial settlement made among members of the family following the death of the late Mrs. Epson. Only one of the four shots which are said to have been fired at Epson took effect, this passing through his left leg above the knee. The other shots are said to have passed through his clothing, one through his right coat sleeve, and the other through his coat on the right side. The preliminary hearing has been set for April 28. Every Orange packing house in the county closed a day-or two following the switchmen's strike, and the industry was paralyzed, the packing crews being laid off. So long as the Valencias remained on the tree there could be no loss to the growers in a delay of a week or two. Students at the state university have formed a "Debs for President" club with one hundred members, and recently sent a telegram to the Atlanta penitentiary where that gentiman is temporarily residing, offering their support. This is the result of the socialistic teaching which they receive from men who are hired to train their footsteps in the right. Berkeley should be investigated by the legislature, and if the socialists and reds on the faculty cannot be weeded out, the institution should be closed. Ben Yorba was in town Monday on a business trip. Ben reports that the oil well known as Yorba No. 1 is standing cemented at better than 3000 feet and good results are expected as soon as drilling again is resumed. KILLING RABID ANIMALS That the killing of wild animals afflicted with rabies is an important phase of the work carried on by the bureau of biological survey, United States department of agriculture, is indicated by reports received from the bureau's skilled hunters in the west. In western regions where predatory animals are found both human life and live stock are seriously menaced when rabies appear. In Washington, for example, one of the hunters reported that rabid coyote had attacked two boys sleeping in a haystack and had badly torn the bedquilts covering them before he was driven off. In Oregon a young woman was set upon by a rabid coyote, which finally ran into a store, where it was shot. The following day three school children on horseback in the same locality were attacked by another coyote, which they succeeded in killing at serious risk to themselves. On a farm near Olympia, Washington, five head of cattle, one hog, and four dogs were killed because they were afflicted with rabies. Anaheim Gazette, per year, $1.50, payable in advance. Attorney B. Last year a number of deaths occurred from this cause. Physicians say it is not the flesh of the loquat but the tough husk surrounding the seeds that causes the illness, and advise people to use care in eating them. Dale R. SHIPMENTS OF FRUIT NOW AT A STANDSTILL Orange County Packing Houses Still Paralyzed by Strike The shipping of citrus fruits from Orange county is still tied up by the strike and the citrus managers are all in the dark as to when shipping will be resumed, says the Register. "The Lord only knows when we will be able to ship again," declared a prominent citrus shipper today. "The situation doesn't seem to be clearing at all. Embargoes are being lifted at some points, but the effect of such releases is more than offset by new embargoes placed on other points. In fact, I am told by railroad authorities that the number of new embargoes are greater than the releases." Hundreds of men and women in the county who would be at work now in picking and packing oranges and packing lemons are still forced to idleness unless they are engaged in other employment to the local shipments out of Los Angeles. Between the P. E. and the truck lines running between here and the metropolis small freight to this city is being handled in a more or less satisfactory manner. COUNTY Y M C A OFFICE MOVED TO SANTA ANA The second step in the plan for enlarging the scope of work of the Young Men's Christian Association in Orange county was made Saturday when the office was opened at 421 Spurgeon building, Santa Ana, and the equipment moved from the residence office at Orange. Today the secretaries have been busy getting settled in their new location arranging for phones, etc., and hope to b establish before the middle of the week. Many activities are on the program for the Y clubs this week. This is national Bible study examination week and a large number of the groups will write the various tests and again compete for the Dan MacDonald cup which has been won by the boys of Orange county in 1917 and 1918 and was held by them last year because no examinations were held by the international committee. Camp leaders will meet on Thursday evening at the First Presbyterian church, Santa Ana. All former camp leaders are urged to be present and bring some good prospective men with them. The c mapannouncement for 1920 is in the hand of the printers and plans and programs will be discussed on Thursday. Saturday, the 24th, a camp reunion will be held at Huntington Beach from 5 to 8 p.m. The camp leaders will have charge of the doings and a big time is expected. Every fellow who was at Camp Wilkie last year should be on hand with buns and wieners and have a part in the fun. Entry blanks for the big track meet have been mailed to all the club leaders and should be in the hands of the secretaries by April 28th. The date for the meet has been set for May 1 at the Santa Ana high school track. referee in papers in the man of Anaht of his affair that Frohns 30,334.12, of secured. Hundreds of men and women in the county who would be at work now in picking and packing oranges and packing lemons are still forced to idleness unless they are engaged in other employment. Lemon picking continues, with the picked fruit being stored in warehouses of the packing plants. It is estimated that there are at this time over 200 cars of lemons stored away. The local freight situation has not cleared any so far as the steam lines are concerned. Santa Fe freight trains are coming down, but they are handling nothing from Los Angeles in less than carload lots. Carloads for the district south of Los Angeles are switched out of the trainloads that arrive in Los Angeles. There is no attempt to ship less than carload lots, according to a statement made at the local Santa Fe station this morning. A new order just received makes provision for citrus shipment, providing permission can be secured from General Freight Agent H. P. Anewalt at Los Angeles, and the further condition that tracks are clear at refrigerating plants where the cars can be run in and out for iceing of the fruit. The situation is not inviting to citrus shipment and it is not probable that even this possibility will be attempted by shippers. The Pacific Electric is operating regularly between here and Los Angeles and is hauling the less than carload shipments that come down from Los Angeles. It is handling anything it can get from the steam lines, in ad- 5 to 8 p.m. The camp leaders will have charge of the doings and a big time is expected. The date for the meet has been set for May 1 at the Santa Ana high school track. Reports from the workers on the boy life survey of the county show that rapid progress is being made and that all data should be in by the end of this week and a new program be outlined to meet the needs discovered, by the next week.
