The Seventh Alabama district in 1916 gave Woodrow Wilson for President a plurality of 4,504 in a total vote of 16,852. On Tuesday, on the face of the returns, C. B. Kennamer, Republican, was elected to Congress by a plurality of 75, and to make this plurality so small returns entirely inconsistent with the drift in all the rest of the district had to be produced by the Democratic managers in Etowah county, the Democratic stronghold of the district. Woodrow Wilson carried in 1916 every county in this district. Kennamer, Republican, with the league of nations as his issue, on Tuesday carried five of the seven counties. Under the election laws of Alabama fully eighty per cent of the returned soldiers of the district, who went to war to "save the world for democracy" were disfranchised. The remaining 20 per cent of the soldiers cast their votes almost solidly for the Republican candidate. But for this mockery of democracy by the Democratic managers the election of the Republican candidate by a larger majority would have been assured. The Democratic managers made the most strenuous effort ever put forth in the district. Their appeal was to sectional prejudice, race hatred and party fealty. It is difficult to secure definite returns from the two counties carried by the Democrats, but there is plenty of evidence, which may be aired at the national capitol, that the usual Dixie Democratic methods of conducting an election were employed. LEPROSY CURE PROVES SUCCESS 20 Patients Treated at Honolulu Hospital Discharged Without Trace of Disease. Announcement has been made at Honolulu that complete cures of leprosy are being made at the Kalihi territorial hospital in this city and that within the past few months twenty patients have been paroled without one recurrence of the disease. Blood tests of the discharged patients have revealed no trace of the leprosy germ. Patients now under treatment are showing marked improvement. Chaulmoogra oil, obtained from the seeds of the taraxogenes kurzli, for fifty years known as the specific for leprosy, was the only medicine used in effecting the cure at the Kalihi hospital, the oil have been perfected for the treatment by a refining process discovered by Dr. A. L. Dean, professor of chemistry and president of the University of Hawaii. Dr. Harry T. Hollman, formerly in charge of the leprosy investigation station, became convinced that chaulmogra was of great value in treating leprosy, but to obtain results it was necessary to administer large doses for a period of many months. Dr. Hollman decided that if the oil could be reduced to its essential properties it would be much more effective. He took his problem to Dr. Dean for solution. The laboratories of the University of Hawaii are refining all the oil used at Kalihi Hospital. The oil is given to the patients in capsule form and also administered once each week by intra-muscular injections. It is interesting to trace the origin of our present burdensome system of weights and measures. The establishment of our present system dates back to the time of Henry VII of England. Two men, described by County Sealer George McPhee as "another pair of frenzied financiers," came to grief yesterday afternoon at Orange, when George Schmidt and Isaac Epstein, itinerant potato merchants, claiming the Angel City as their place of permanent residence, pleaded guilty to selling short-weight potatoes to a farmer near El Modena and paid a $5 fine. The men were driving about in a Ford truck and called at the El Modena home and sold the owner one sack of potatoes which they assured him weighed 120 pounds. After the men had departed the potatoes were weighed and found to be 28 pounds short of the purported quantity. County Sealer McPhee was notofled as was City Marshal Warner of Orange, and both officials started an investigation, the former going to Olive, where the potato peddlers said they were headed for, and the latter going to El Modena, where he found the men and brought them to Orange, where they were brought before Justice of the Peace Armor and charged with violating the weights and measures law, to which a plea of guilty was entered and a fine of $5, assessed by the court, promptly paid. Sealer McPhee says great credit is due City Marshal Warner for his promptness in rousing up these offenders as had it not been for his quick action the chances were that the men would have sold the balance of their cargo and escaped detection. McPhee also says that a common practice with these potato and apple pedddlers is to open the sacks or boxes and take from each of the original packages anywhere from five to 25 pounds, the value of which is pure "velvet" in addition to the regular profit. This operation is known to the fraternity as 'jimmying' the sack or box, and it surely is a Jim-dandy trick," says McPhee.
