PARODY OF THE PROGRESSIVE SON (As interpreted by S. Armour) The republican party had two kinds of members which may be represented by the two sons in the Parable of the Prodigal Son in carrying out such representation and to show the contrast between the returning prodigal son and the returning progressive son, the parable may be paraphrased as follows: A certain party had two sons. After considerable fault finding the younger of them said to his father, "Father, since you will not avail yourself of my superior wisdom, I might as well go elsewhere; give me the portion of goods that falleth to me." and he divided unto them his living. And not many days after, the young son, vowing he would never return, gathered all together and took his journey into a far country, that is, into a party with principles and policies remote from those of the party he left, and there wasted his substance, his votes and influence, with riotous living. Wherever he went he spoke evilly of his father (the republican party), declaring that he had outlived his usefulness and was in his dotage. He also revilled the elder son, stigmatizing him as a standpatter, a reactionary, and, with the help of other malcontents, defeated his brother's efforts in behalf of their father. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land, for the free trade tariff, that he helped bring on the country by leaving his father's house, had commenced to pinch the producers, and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of New Jersey; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine, that is, to enlist the wardheeers in behalf of his automobiles. the mouth of all his prophets," thereby deceiving the people and bringing deefat upon his father. Finding later that the hearts of the people went out after his father, he tried to assassinate him and other fathers, so that the people would have no counsellors and could be plundered at will by himself; but the people revolted against the parricide and saved their parties. Then he administered a sleeping potion to his father to incapacitate him for guarding the house; but the elder son prepared a referendum antidote to counteract the drug. Having failed to get the majority of the people to register as progressives and being unable to destroy the parties, this self styled progressive son set about it to capture the republican party. While pleading with the elder son for harmony, he everywhere advised maintaining the progressive organization, so as to force recognition, just as though harmony could ever be brought about by maintaining factions! He demanded that half of the delegates to the national convention be given him, that the referendum then under way be abandoned, and that one Hiram W. Johnson be supported for vice-president. These unwarranted demands were rejected by the elder son, with the assurance, however, that all who were republicans at heart were welcome to return to the party. The younger son then changed his name again; but like the donkey in the lion's skin, the ears gave him away. He had become so accustomed to hyphenated names for himself that he could not be satisfied with the simple yet dignified name, republican; but he must take the name this time of united republican. He put up twenty-six delegates of his own selection, labeled them united republicans, rushed around in a single county to get the requisite number of signers SALE UNDER MORE In the Superior Court Orange, St. T. WILLIAMS & RUTT Attorneys for Plains brother's efforts in behalf of their father. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land, for the free trade tariff, that he helped bring on the country by leaving his father's house, had commenced to pinch the producers, and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of New Jersey; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine, that is, to enlist the wardheelers in behalf of his autocracy. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat; and no man gave unto him any of "them offices" with salaries annexed. And when he came to himself, he said, "How many hired servants of my father have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, 'Father I have sinned against heaven and before thee and I am no more worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants.' That will touch the old man's heart and gain me access to the house after which I can fight it out with that reactionary son of his." And he arose and came to his father; but when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son commenced to recite the little speech he had been rehearsing; but the father said to his servants, "Bring forth the best robe and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found." And they began to be merry: Thus would the republican party welcome back its self styled progressive son, if he would return in the proper frame of mind. Now the elder son (the republican son) was at work in the field when the younger son (the self styled progressive son) returned to his father's house; and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard the music and dancing in honor of his brother's return. Fearing that the young prodigal would try to obtain control of the remainder of the father's estate, the elder son was angry and protested against his father's neglecting the son who had always been faithful and making a feast for the son who had deserted him and wasted his substance in riotous living. In reply the father The younger son then changed his name again; but like the donkey in the lion's skin, the ears gave him away. He had become so accustomed to hyphenated names for himself that he could not be satisfied with the simple yet dignified name, republican; but he must take the name this time of united republican. He put up twenty-six delegates of his own selection, labeled them united republicans, rushed around in a single county to get the requisite number of signers and filed the lists with the secretary of state first, so as to occupy the top of the republican, no preference column, without the prefix, United, and without any wider space to indicate where the claim-jumper ticket ends and where the regular republican ticket begins. Thank Heaven, there are some members of the progressive party and members of other parties who condemn these dishonest schemes for the capture of the republican party in California, and call them pretty small politics. As to the personal merits of the progressive son's list of delegates, it is reported that 4 or 5 of them are heads of great corporations, and that the remainder are men of wealth who are willing to spend large sums of money to prostitute the republican party to their own personal ends. There can, therefore, be no just claim of superiority in the personnel of the united republican delegation either as to ability, trust-worthiness or regard for the interests of the people. Now, lest there should be some misapprehension, from the foregoing, about the way those who wish to return to the republican party would be received, let it be understood that the doors of the party, like the doors of the church, are always open for the reception of members. Any person who believes in the principles and policies of the republican party and who is willing to work with others for the furtherance of such principles, is eligible as a member and will always be welcomed to its ranks. No disability will attach to him "on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude;" but he must enter the party as an individual and not as a member of another party or faction. Let all true republicans, therefore, drop all factional names and distinctions, come together simply as republicans. And work in peace and unity for the common welfare. Producer of gas. Fearing that the young prodigal would try to obtain control of the remainder of the father's estate, the elder son was angry and protested against his father's neglecting the son who had always been faithful and making a feast for the son who had deserted him and wasted his substance in riots living. In reply the father said, "Son, thou are ever with me, and all that I have is thine; it was meet that we should make merry and be glad; for thy brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found." In like manner the father (the republican party) appreciates and relies on his faithful son and will try to protect his rights in the home—"all that I have is thine"—but at the same time he welcomes the returning prodigal and will give him a chance to do better in the future. Here ends the Parable of the Prodigal Son, and would properly end the parody of the progressive son, if that son had been really repentant and acted in good faith in returning to his father's house; but the parody of the progressive son is still going on, and each act of the younger son adds new proof of his insincerity and sinister purposes toward his elder brother. Unlike his prototype, the prodigal son, who confessed his wrong-doing and asked for some humble service in his father's house, the self styled progressive son tried to shift the blame for his misdeeds from himself to his elder brother, and even now he is seeking to gain control of his father's house by force and fraud. In this state four years ago he crowded his elder brother off the ballot, and two years ago, like the spirit that led Ahab to his death, he was "a lying spirit in welcomed to its ranks. No disability will attach to him "on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude;" but he must enter the party as an individual and not as a member of another party or faction. Let all true republicans, therefore, drop all factional names and distinctions, come together simply as republicans and work in peace and unity for the common welfare.
