Mortimer Fleishhacker, principal owner of the Great Western Power company, has just been appointed by Governor Johnson as treasurer of the University of California. Fleischhacker is also treasurer of the Johnson-Earl hydro-electric "United" ticket of candidates for delegates to the republican national convention. His attorney Guy C. Earl is one of the candidates. And so the plums do fall.

should vote for the progressive column and show the country at large that California, which has been proud of being a progressive state, has still a goodly number of patriots who are willing to be identified under that banner. These were the sentiments expressed by a well known party leader, who refused to have his name made known because of political reasons.
SCHOOL OFFICIALS WILL WELCOME INVESTIGATION
Prof. Van der Veer Says Mexican Situation in Schools is Satisfactory
Referring to a paragraph in our account of the board of trade meeting, published in last week's issue, which stated that a committee had been appointed to investigate the sanitary conditions of the Broadway and Central schools and endeavor to have the Mexican children segregated from the whites, Prof. J. L. Van der Veer, principal of the schools said:

For years California was notorious because the Southern Pacific dominated its politics. Hiram Johnson was elected governor on his pledge that he would kick the Southern Pacific out of politics. A new blight has arisen in the shape of the Hydro-Electric power interests and is threatening the rpublican party. The so-called united republican ticket is sponsored by Guy C. Earl, attorney for the Great Western Power company and other special interests, who is the agent of Gov. Johnson. Is it not strange how Johnson, who gnashed his teeth at the Southern Pacific is now most acquiescent, when a new political machine comes to the front?
The progressive leaders are sending out an urgent call to their cohorts all over Southern California to register their choice of delegates in the progressive column at the presidential primary on May 2nd. A large number of progressives, who are recognized as influential men in the party, are resisting the dictum of the so called united republicans to invade the G. O. P. column on the ballot and aid in forcing upon the people of California the 26 delegates who were picked from a conference of forty men representing Guy C. Earl, attorney for the Great Western Power company and their special itinerests.
Prominent progressives have stated the confidential opinion that they fully believed that they would be violating the sanctity of the ballot box and proving themselves Judases to their cause should they follow the law laid down by the united Progressives
"We will give this committee a cordial welcome. We also invite the public to call at the schools and investigate. We will gladly show all visitors conditions as they now exist, and believe everybody will be satisfied. There are no Mexicans in the Broadway school, and in the Central school the first, second and third grades are given up exclusively to them. There are a few pupils of the better class scattered through the higher grades, but there is nothing objectionable about them."
"So far as cleanliness is concerned, we always have plenty of soap, water and towels on hand, and if one of them appears at school in need of such things he is promptly cleansed. Very few of them are in need of such service. On the whole they compare favorably with some of the whites.
"We would be pleased to have any person entertaining doubts on this subject call and make a personnel investigation."
The committee appointed to visit the schools consisted of Albert Graham, H. W. Adams and M. E. Beebe. These gentlemen were instructed to report back to the board conditions as they found them.

TAXPAYER CALLS ON ASSESSOR SLEEPER
Receives Courteous Consideration
From Jim Sleeper, but Finds Taxes Are High
Anaheim, Cal., April 12, 1916.
Citizens of Anaheim:
The people of Anaheim and vicinity before voting on any kinds of bonds, should be made aware of the fact that the county assessment for Anaheim has this year been raised 25 to 100 per cent and more. When the deputy assessor calls to take your assessment, compare it with last year's tax receipt and convince yourself. Now, bearing in mind, that the taxes are already so high that real estate in Anaheim is almost unsaleable, surely something should be done to halt this extreme taxation to avoid ruin. Believing that this raise of fifty to one hundred per cent might have been an error of some kind, the writer investigated the matter and was thereupon informed by the county assessor, Mr.
A WILSON BOGEY MAN
The president has not yet furnished the public with any details of the sinister conspiracy which he has solemnly declared to exist for the purpose of provoking war with Mexico. Sufficient time has elapsed since the making of this declaration for the elaboration of the story—and certainly the demand for a bill of particulars has arisen loudly enough and in places of sufficient importance to warrant attention. Yet the president remains silent. As in the case two years ago when he denounced the insidious lobby which he said was trying to hampen the passage of the tariff law, and in the later instance when he said that he had secured his information regarding Mexico from untruthful persons, the president rests upon his original assertion and refuses to particularize.
The result of this is two fold. In the first place many innocent persons are placed under an unjust suspicion. And, secondly, the reaction upon the president's sense of judgment is most severe. The country is beginning to realize that the president is accust-marine campaign began.
Robert Paterson Houston, Unionist member of parliament from Liverpool, in an apalp to the nation, declares that the scarcity of shipping is becoming so serious a problem that the present agitation regarding the price of food is likely to yield place to the question as to whether sufficient food will be available.

The growth in Germany's submarine warfare is shown, according to estimates published in Berlin by the fact that 81,000 tons of merchantmen of countries at war with Germany have been destroyed since April 1 as compared with 20,000 tons for the month of January, 40,000 tons for February and 100,000 tons for March.
According to newspapers 42 British, 10 of Great Britain's allies and 30 neutral vessels have been lost since March 1 when the new German sub-
