TWO COMEDIES PRESENTED BY A.U.H.S. MODERN LANGUAGE CLASSES GIVE INTERESTING ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY NIGHT LARGE AUDIENCE WITNESS EXHIBITIONS IN SPANISH AND GERMAN BY THE PUPILS Even though the words were Greek to most of the auditors the entertainments given by the modern language classes at the high school auditorium Friday evening were enjoyed by all and generously punctuated with applause. There were two parts to the entertainment, or rather two entertainments, one being rendered in Spanish and the other in German. The Spanish program began at 7:30 and lasted until 9 o'clock, when the German class took possession of the stage. The high school orchestra under the direction of Miss Gibbs enlivened the occasion with some excellent selections. A one act comedy, entitled, "La Sorpresa de Isodoro," was the principal feature of the Spanish selection. The cast was as follows: Isodoro, the friend....Dale Quarton Dr. Cerebron ....Julius Hallabaugh Juanita, the servant ...Arthur Coons Susana, the wife....Ben Hemmerling Remedios, mother-in-law—Ruth Coons According to the plot Dr. Cerebron was conducting a private sanitarium for mentally unbalanced people. He received a visit from Isodoro, an old college chum. He was suddenly called away and left his friend in charge of the office. Isodoro was discovered their parts so well that they were called back, and each presented with a beautiful basket of flowers. "Der Dritte," a short but exceedingly strenuous farce, was the last thing on the program. There were only four actors, but they acted enough for a dozen. The cast was: Hausmann (father) Edw. Hemmerling Apollonia (mother)... Emma Wisser Adelhied (daughter) ..Marie Schacht Klotilde (cousin) ..Edna Hochull Each parent of the young lady, it appeared, had selected a husband for her, and each was determined on carrying his point. But Miss Adelhied had a think of her own. She had made her own selection and repudiated both of the others. There were some strenuous arguments, but Klotilde, the cousin, succeeded in circumventing both the old people, and forcing a compromise on the young lady's choice. Ed Hemmerling gave an excellent representation of a choleric German hausmann, who was bent upon being lord and master in his own castle, but who gracefully gave up when he found the odds against him too great. Miss Schacht was also presented with a basket of flowers. WHY LEMON DUTY WAS LOWERED Internal dissentions in the Fruit Importers' union, an organization of New York importers of citrus fruits from Sicily, has brought forth the revelation that a fund, said by one side to be $140,000 and by the other to be little more than $100,000 was raised to obtain a reduction of the duty on Sicilian lemons in the Underwood tariff act. The entire trouble of the present time are a sequel to that successful campaign where the duty was lowered from $1.20 a box to about 35 cents. Now William C. Beer, a man of many activities, has brought suit for $75,000 balance due on his promotion contract which led up to the reduc- Isodoro, the friend...Dale Quarton Dr. Cerebron ...Julius Hallabaugh Juanita, the servant ...Arthur Coons Susana, the wife...Ben Hemmerling Remedios, mother-in-law—Ruth Coons According to the plot Dr. Cerebron was conducting a private sanitarium for mentally unbalanced people. He received a visit from Isodoro, an old college chum. He was suddenly called away and left his friend in charge of the office. Isodoro was discovered by the family and was mistaken for a patient. Juanita immediately fell in love with the handsome young man, but feared him because of his disordered mind. Complications ensued which promised serious consequences, but the opportune return of the doctor smoothed out the wrinkles and set everybody straight. The first thing on the German program was a dialogue between little Miss Mary Tubach and Arthur Bradley. It appeared that the doctor had been called by the lady of the house to prescribe for a sick child. After making an examination he decided that the child was being given unwholesome food, consequently, in order to save it further distress, he ate up all the objectionable rations in the house. The entire trouble of the present time are a sequel to that successful campaign where the duty was lowered from $1.20 a box to about 35 cents. Now William C. Beer, a man of many activities, has brought suit for $75,000 balance due on his promotion contract which led up to the reduction of the tariff, and various members of the union are demanding an accounting of the expenditures in the campaign, calling for an annual meeting and election where they declare a new set of officers will be elected and an investigation be held. There are all sorts of allegations and denials on both sides as well as harsh words in which one is accused of having said that some one else was strong in Washington or was not strong; that this or that statesman was favorable or unfavorable. Congressman Kettner has made the statement that the California delegation has abandoned hope of favorable action by the ways and means committee on his bill to fix a duty of one cent pound on lemons to meet foreign competition.
