NEWS NOTES OF COUNTY Lots of Beans Still Unsold— There are between 700,000 and 800,000 sacks of lima beans remaining unsold in California and that of this amount approximately 100,000 sacks are in Orange county. Limas are quoted at 4½ cents in the market at present, which is a fair price. The amount of limas in California remaining unsold at this time is greater than has ever been known in the history of the industry. What caused the surplus is not definitely known. It is stated, that on account of the war scare, lima beans were sold for a short time in the fall of 1914 at one cent more than actual market conditions warranted. After a short time, it is stated, the price took a drop, this working to the disadvantage of eastern brokers, who cut off buying limas and bought up other varieties for export. This at lease is an explanation given by one local man who is familiar with the bean situation. According to this authority the outlook for a raise in lima bean prices is not very encouraging, at least for the present. Surveying the Harbor— Captain Charles T. Leeds, engineer for the Orange county harbor commission, has a crew of men at work at the entrance of Newport bay gathering data for his report upon the feasibility of making the bay into a harbor. Accurate figures are being gathered upon the character of the bottom across the entrance as well as upon both sides of it. The report will show how far it is down to rock foundation. It will indicate with what success dredging can be done. Borings are being made with a hydraulic apparatus, and through these borings the data is being secured upon which Captain Leeds will be able to give an accurate description of the entrance. Honey Crop Will be Good— Apiarists of Orange county have good cause for rejoicing, according to bee experts. Early rains assure a profuse crop of honey-making blossoms and presage excellent bee conditions. It is thought that the recent cold snap will have no bad effects upon the blossoms upon which the bees thrive. The orange blossom and the button sage are the blossoms which are best for the bees. The late frosts have not injured the sage growth, it is thought. Bee culturists should experience an unusually good year. Late rains will do a great deal to improve conditions here. The best sage blossoms are to be found in May, June and July. According to George E. DeSellem, Los Angeles county bee inspector, Southern California developed 3000 tons of honey last year. Five carloads were shipped from one district alone, netting the apiarist $25,000. Wild alfalfa, wild buckwheat, orange blossoms and button sage furnished food for the bees. Suit for Divorce— A sixteen year search for a missing husband was revealed when Margaret E. Davis filed suit in the superior court against Jefferson A. Davis and Irene E. Lovelace for separate maintenance. Mrs. Davis alleges a man registered as J. A. Phillips and living at 927 E. 29th street, Los Angeles, is her husband. An attorney who represents Mr. Davis or Phillips, asserted the latter had secured a divorce. Mrs. Davis has a fifteen year old daughter. She says the defendant filited a petition in the superior court December 14 to have his name changed to Jefferson A. Phillips. She asserts her husband has accumulated property in Orange county worth at least $14,000, some of which he has recorded in the name of Irene E. Lovelace. The complaint asks the court to declare this property the community property of Mr. Davis or Phillips and Mrs. Davis and to award her half of it and $150 a month alimony. Change in Rural Routes— Fullerton may lose one of the four rural routes which stretch from that postoffice, Postmaster Edwards gives as his opinion. The change, together with a revision of the other routes in Orange county, he said may be expected as a result of the visit several months ago of C.D. Low, postoffice in The complaint asks the court to declare this property the community property of Mr. Davis or Phillips and Mrs. Davis and to award her half of it and $150 a month allmony. Change in Rural Routes— Fullerton may lose one of the four rural routes which stretch from that postoffice, Postmaster Edwards gives as his opinion. The change, together with a revision of the other routes in Orange county, he said may be expected as a result of the visit several months ago of C. D. Low, postoffice inspector. "Following a tour of inspection over the line, Mr. Low recommended a revision and extension of all routes in Orange county," the postmaster said. "These recommendations were made to postoffice officials and I have been expecting daily to get notice of the projected change. It is my opinion that Fullerton is to lose one of the four rural routes which now elave from that postoffice. The route, if postoffice authorities decide to make the change, will be embodied in the Placentia district, I believe." Paid Dear for His Doves— James H. Ray of San Juan Capistrano turned $25 over to Justice John Danerl of the mission town last week. Ray paid the money as penalty for getting caught killing doves out of season. County Game Warden Adkinson had heard that there had been frequent shooting of doves on the mesa near the line between Orange and San Diego counties. Saturday Adkinson went to the place. "Near the line" was right. Adkinson saw two men with guns over on the San Diego side of the Echenique-O'Neill fence. Adkinson wanted to get them on the Orange county side. Watchful waiting had its results. Very soon Ray came over on the Adkinson side, and about that time up fluttered a dove. Whang! Down dropped the dove. Adkinson sprinted out from the gasoline station which is established at the county line and nabbed Ray and the bird. Ray pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him. He said he did not know the season for doves was closed. Dr. M. M. Henderson, Democrat, Suite 1, Mulfinix bldg, Anaheim. NOW, THEREFORE, notice is hereby given that I, Edgar J. Hartung, City Treasurer of the City of Anaheim, under and by virtue of the authority vested in me by law, will on the 21st day of February, 1916, at the hour of 10 o'clock A.M. of said day, sell at public auction the property hereinafter described and mentioned in said bond, at the office of the said City Treasurer of said City at The First National Bank of Anaheim, at the Southeast corner of the intersection of South Los Angeles Street and East Center Street in said city, unless the amount due on said bond and the interest due thereon, together with the cost of publication of this notice, are paid, according to law; and that I will sell the same to person who will pay the amount of unpaid principal and interest due on said bond, together with the cost of publication of this notice; that the said sale will be made in accordance with and under the provisions of an Act of the Legislature of the State of California entitled "An Act to Provide for Work in and upon Streets, Avenues, Lanes, Alleys, Courts, Places and Sidewalks within Municipalities, and upon property rights or way owned by Municipalities, and for Establishing and Changing the Grades of any such Streets, Avenuees, Lanes, Alleys, Courts, Places and Sidewalks and providing for the insurance and Payment of Street Improvement Bonds to Represent Certain Assessments for the Cost Thereof and Providing a Method for the payment of Such Bonds," approved April 7th, 1911, and amendments thereto. Seal Beach Improvements— Bond issues will soon make their debut in Seal Beach. In the course of the next few months the residents of that young municipality will be required to go to the polls and vote for the acquisition of a water, sewer and street lighting system. The present water system, owned and installed by the Bayside Land company, will in all probability be taken over by the city. A committee of city officials and citizens will be appointed this week to investigate and report on a satisfactory sewer system and street lighting plant. The sewage system is by far the most important question facing the trustees, as the present cesspool drainage is anything but satisfactory. The effect of the recent storm waters on the dirt streets of the city has also made the question of paving the main thoroughfares a momentous one. The salaries of the various city officials, both elective and appointive, have been established by the trustees. City Marshal Nuesh-wanger, who is also street superintendent, will receive $25 a month salary and with the exception of City Attorney Burke, is the highest salaried man on the city's pay roll. City Clerk Havens will receive $10 a month and the city attorney $10 for each meeting he attends and the same amount for each ordinance he draws up. Just in time to be legal for the present year, the trustees have passed an ordinance for the levying and collection of taxes in Seal Beach township. Sand in the state of California must hereafter be sold by cubic measurement, instead of by the ton. This order has been issued by Chas. G. Johnson, state superintendent of weights and measures, after M. M. Crane, San Diego county sealer, exposed the fraud which he alleges sometimes existed when sand is sold by the ton. Crane found cases where water soaked sand was sold by the ton, the purchaser paying money for the water, under the impression he was buying dry sand.
