TO KILL GRASSHOPPERS Poison Baits Recommended—Criddle Mixture and Hopperdozer Also Effective The most practical means of destroying grasshoppers and preventing their ravages, according to the depart-of agriculture's entomologist, is by means of a poison bait made as follows: Wheat bran 25 pounds. Paris green, 1 pound. Cheap molasses or sirup, 2 quarts. Oranges or lemons, 3 fruits. Anything of this nature must, of course, be made and distributed with care, as poison baits may poison children as well as grasshoppers if placed where they are readily accessible. Thoroughly mix together the bran and Paris green. An ordinary wash-tub will answer for this purpose. Into a separate receptacle containing the molasses or sirup squeeze the juices of the fruit; then chop up finely the skin and pulp of the fruit and add this also to the molasses mixture, which is then diluted with 2 gallons of water. Mix the two together and add enough more water to bring the whole to a stir dough. This amount of poison bait is sufficient to treat from 5 to 10 acres when properly applied. It should be borne in mind, however, that the fruit is the essential element of this bait, and if not employed 75 per cent of the efficiency of the bait is lost. This poison bait should be applied to the area to be treated early in the morning, before sunrise. To obtain the best results, the bait must be sown broadcast in strips 1 rod apart over the area to be treated. Broad-casting obviates the possibility of horses, cattle, sheep, poultry or birds being able to obtain a sufficient amount of poison do not wait to see what they are going to do, but prevent their doing anything by putting into practice, before any damage has been done and while the hoppers are very young, whatever emasures are to be used. It usually requires several days to poison the grasshoppers, and large areas can not be traversed with the hopperdozers in a day. Therefore if measures are to be successful they must not be delayed. A simple and cheap preventive measure that may be recommended to deal with the grasshopper problem is the destruction of the eggs. Destruction of the eggs may be accomplished by either plowing, harrowing, disking, or cultivating, in the fall or winter, all roadsides, ditch banks, margins of cultivated fields, uncultivated fields, and grassy margins along fences. In short, all waste lands that it is possible to reach in this manner should receive attention, unless it is known that no eggs were deposited there. The soil need not be stirred deeply, 2 inches being a sufficient depth to accomplish the desired effect; and circumstances will probably dictate the kind of tool or tools that a farmer ought to use and where to use them. There is no doubt whatever that if this measure were put into operation at the proper time, in whatever manner is most practicable, disastrous outbreaks the following spring would be forestalled and prevented. Except in case of isolated farms or ranches, there should by all means be concerted action in this movement. Where fields can be quickly inundated and the water promptly run off as is frequently done in rice fields, the young grasshoppers may be killed by flooding the field for a day or two just as the eggs are hatching. If close watch is kept to determine just when the young grasshoppers are hatching, and prompt action taken at this time, much good can be accomplished; but and at the palace the visitors will take part in a special by the transporter race track on each automobile prowl. These days are on the various sections California's roadsation, it is probable will be set aside. The following counties will be San Luis Obispo Ventura, Los Angeles Diego, Riverside, Imperial. To obtain the best results, the bait must be sown broadcast in strips 1 rod apart over the area to be treated. Broad-casting obviates the possibility of horses, cattle, sheep, poultry or birds being able to obtain a sufficient amount of poison in the field to kill or injure them. But under no circumstances should the bait be scattered over treated areas in piles or bunches for fear that birds or live stock might, under such circumstances, eat enough of the poison to prove fatal. Another inexpensive but effective poison bait is known as the Criddle mixture, and has given most satisfactory results on the ranches of both the United States and Canada. The mixture is composed of half a barrel of fresh horse droppings in which is mixed one pound each of salt and Paris green. If the horse droppings are not fresh, the salt is dissolved in water and, mixed with the manure and poison. When this mixture is scattered freely about where the grasshoppers are abundant, they seem to be attracted to it, for they devour it readily and are poisoned thereby. While it is much better to use a poison bait before the grasshoppers develop wings, the problem may be dealt with more or less effectively on by the use of the hopperdozer. This is an inexpensive, durable, easily-constructed contrivance, filled with water and kerosene, which may be run through infested alfalfa or clover fields. As the hopperdozer is drawn over the ground by horsepower the loquats jump into the kerosene and are killed. The only place where the hopperdozer will prove more or less impracticable is on rocky land or on soil not yet cleared of stumps. The hopperdozer is constructed of sheet iron, preferably galvanized, of reasonable thickness to insure strength and except for the end pieces, made of a single sheet 10 or 12 feet long and 26 inches wide. The front is formed by turning up one edge a couple of inches, and the back may be turned up a foot, thus making a shallow pan 1 foot wide, with the back the same height and with a front 2 inches high. Ends are rivited in and soldered. Runners of old wagon tires are placed at each end, and another in the center case of isolated farms or ranches, there should by all means be concerted action in this movement. Where fields can be quickly inundated and the water promptly run off as frequently done in rice fields, the young grasshoppers may be killed by flooding the field for a day or two just as the eggs are hatching. If close watch is kept to determine just when the young grasshoppers are hatching, and prompt action taken at this time, much good can be accomplished; but as soon as the young begin to move about flooding will avail but little, as the grasshoppers will climb to the upper part of vegetation beyond the reach of the water. The ravages of grasshoppers have been widespread, and hardly a season passes when there are not a number of serious outbreaks reported throughout the country. The probabilities are that the amount of injury will greatly increase as the area of alfalfa cultivation increases unless more effective control measures are taken. Especially in the west have the farmers been beset with the pest, whose destructive hordes still follow closely in the footsteps of the reclamation engineer. Interested readers may receive Farmers' Bulletin No. 637 on the Grasshopper Problem and Alfalfa Culture by writing to the United States Department of Agriculture, Washington. CALIPATRIA'S WOMAN FARMER SHIPS CROPS BY PARCEL POST Miss May Beatty, known as Calpatria's woman farmer and who purchased 40 acres of land there about a year ago, is now making excellent and profitable use of the parcel post in shipping her vegetables. She shipped a fine lot of green peas, beets, onions and some fresh ranch eggs from here farm to her friend, Mrs. T. H. Shurn, at Riverside, and they were received in good condition, and this has given the lady farmer a suggestion for the disposal of her products and from now on her selling slogan is from farm to table by courtesy of Uncle Sam. Others, however, have shipped vegetables by parcel post in other parts of the country, and among the first was the sage of East Aurora, N. Y., Elbert Hubbard, from his wonderful farm, who claims that the consumers will not only receive fresher products but will get them cheaper by parcel post. These runners are riveted to the pan, and should extend both backward and forward, in order to overcome to some extent the inequalities of the ground and cause the hopperdozer to run more smoothly. By soldering it about the heads of the rivets the pan will be made watertight. The pan is filled with water, on which is poured enough kerosene to cover it with a film, the horse is hitched to the end runners, and the outfit is ready for use. By using longer, wider and heavier sheet iron a larger and stronger pan can be made, and this further strengthened by additional runners; a horse can then be hitched to each end, or the pan may be mounted on low wheels. Cooperation between farmers or ranchmen is of the utmost importance whether the hopperdozer or poisoned baits be used. On some of the more extensive ranches the owners can protect themselves by reason of the great extent of territory that is under the control of a single individual, but among smaller holdings cooperation is very essential. Forestalling of outbreaks would be spoken of by the ranchmen as watching out for trouble. By this is meant the careful watching of the fields for the appearance of the grasshoppers. When these are found to be present, ANAHEIM GAZETTE and at the palace of transportation the visitors will leave the cars and take part in a special reception given by the transportation club. At the race track on each of these days special automobile programs will be given. These days are to be determined by the various sections, and, as June finds California's roads in the best condition, it is probable that the nine days will be set aside for this month. The following Southern California counties will be represented: San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Imperial. LUSCIOUS BERRIES GROWN IN ABUNDANCE The United States department of Agriculture recently has completed a survey of the production and marketing of strawberries, and a report of the subject just issued shows that California leads the United States in the shipment of this crop. Last year California shipped 2,312 carloads of strawberries to market, and this record was not even approached by any other, second place being held by Tennessee with 1,571 carloads. The government bulletin contains a list of all shipping stations in the country where carload shipments originate, and from this list it appears the grand total of 14,553 carloads of strawberries were sent to market last year. The eight most important berry growing districts are set down as California, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Louisiana, North and South Carolina, Virginia and the Ozarks. The middle west plays a more important part in the industry than the figures indicate. There are great quantities of berries grown in that section in small patches and these are shipped to market by trolley, express and in the producers own wagons. Only a long since died out. Approaching Honolulu by steamer from San Francisco, the traveler has the evidence of volcanic action thrust upon him in the first land he sees, by the ash cone of Koko head and the well preserved craters of Diamond head and the Punch Bowl, which are in the outskirts of the city. The high mountains of the island of Oahu are also made up of black lava—basalt—but they are largely covered with vegetation and one must go to the largest island of the group, Hawaii, for wonderful demonstrations of the method by which all these island mountains have been built up from great ocean depths. Kilauea, one of the most active, and Mauna Doa, one of the largest volcanoes in the world, are showing just how lava builds up mountains. Since the time of Captain Cook the Hawaiian Islands have been visited by geologists and others interested in the problems of volcanoes, and much has been written concerning them. Recently the United States geological survey has taken up the investigation of the islands from various economic and scientific points of view and is preparing topographic maps, which are necessary for many kinds of work. It has been found that the geologic history of the islands is by no means so simple as was supposed from the earlier publications concerning them. It appears that there are many other kinds of lavas in Hawaii besides basalt, and many facts of association of the different lavas are of interest to students of the inner history of volcanoes. While much is yet to be learned concerning the lavas of these islands, Mr. Cross shows that present knowledge of the rocks is sufficient to throw light on some of the most vexed questions pertaining to the origin and relations of the igneous rocks of the earth. The chemical relations are discussed with particular thoroughness that the Assembly committee has decided to hold Judge Childs for impeachment trial by the Senate. Governor Johnson has vetoed two bills by Senator Breed, raising the bonding limit of cities from 15 to 25 per cent of their assessed value. The Senate sustained the vetoes unanimously. The governor said no measures had evoked such a storm of telegraphic protest. All employers of more than five persons, except farm hands and domestics, will be required to pay their employees semi-monthly if Assemblyman Mouser's bill, which passed the Senate 28 to 6, is approved by Governor Johnson. The bill is one of the leading measures of labor. In the face of an almost unanimous committee recommendation against it, an Assembly bill to establish the two-platoon system for fire departments failed of passage in the Senate, by 20 to 18, 21 being necessary to carry. Notice of a motion for reconsideration was given. Without a dissenting vote the House passed Assemblyman Ferguson's bill to create free employment agencies. The measure empowers the commissioner of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics. strawberries were sent to market last year. Only a very small portion of the berries in that section is concentrated into carload lots, this method of shipment being confined to California and the South where the fields are larger and much more attention is paid to the industry. California and Southern Texas are first on the market with berries each spring, according to the bulletin, and they put their fruit on the market by March 1st. Later in March the Louisiana crop comes on and lasts for two months. Tennessee and Virginia have all their berries shipped by May, and by the end of July California is the only one left in the field for carload shipments. July ends the carload shipments and from then on the markets are supplied by the small producers in the middle west. In connection with this work the Department of Agriculture is conducting a telegraphic market news service of the daily movement of strawberry to the various large markets during the current season together with the prices received. Reports of these movements and prices are telegraphed daily to producing areas and consuming centers in order to assist in the profitable distribution of the crop. BRITISH ARROGANCE IRRITATES SENATORS That the state department cannot long withhold a protest against the deliberate methods which are being employed in the British prize courts, was the opinion expressed in official circles in Washington. Reports from London declare that millions of pounds of foodstuffs are tied up in British ports owing to the dilatory tactics of the prize courts. Senator Hoke Smith has protested against this and intimated that unless conditions improve congress may retaliate by forbidding cotton exports to England. A protest is seemingly the only course open to this government, as CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT OVERTURNING PRESENT TAX SYSTEM, TO GO TO A VOTE OF PEOPLE Power is given the legislature to overturn the present tax system—established in 1910 by John B. Curtlin's constitutional amendment No. 1—and set up a new scheme in Senator Thompson's constitutional amendment which has been adopted by the Assembly after a tense two hours' battle. It will now go to the people. One section abolishes the State Board of Equalization, but permits its members to hold office until their terms expires in January, 1919. Administration of tax laws is to be vested in a state commission. Thompson's measure, next to the non-partisan bill, was regarded by the administration as its most important legislation. With the entire strength of the administration behind the bill, it rallied 54 votes, exactly the two-thirds necessary. There were 23 noes. Opposition to the measure was led by the same forces that opposed the administration non-partisan bill. Supporters of the amendment asserted that the big corporations were opposed to it. opponents countered with a charge that the large corporations were for it. Assemblyman Meek of Oroville, a democrat, led the fight for the amendment. Assemblyman Schmitt of San Francisco, Hawson of Fresno and Quinn of Eureka headed the opposition. On the first roll call one aye was lacking, but after the House had been held under a call for twenty minutes Byrnes changed from no to aye. A tax of $7 a seat is put on litney buses in a bill by Senator Cogswell, which passed the Senate without opposition. The bill is expected to be kinds of lavas in Hawaii besides basalt, and many facts of association of different lavas are of interest to students of the inner history of volcanoes. THE LAVAS OF HAWAII Among the island possessions of the United States none exhibit more notable points of interest for the observant traveller or the naturalist than the Hawaiian Island. The natives are typical of the race inhabiting many island groups of the south Pacific, the plain life has the attractive features of insular development in semitropical latitudes, the marine life of warm waters is wonderful, but perhaps the most fascinating, instructive and awe inspiring of all the natural phenomena of Hawaii are furnished by its active volcanoes. The whole group of islands, extending in a chain for many hundred miles, is of volcanic origin, though some of the islets and reefs are but the wave-battered remnant of volcanoes whose fires have Assemblyman Schmitt of San Francisco, Hawson of Fresno and Quinn of Eureka headed the opposition. On the first roll call one aye was lacking, but after the House had been held under a call for twenty minutes Byrnes changed from no to aye. For a second time in two weeks Assemblyman Conrad's bill requiring municipalities to regulate the jitneys passed the lower house by a vote of 41 to 33. It was amended in committee to require operators to obtain permits or franchises, and to carry sufficient insurance to protect passengers against accidents. It now goes to the Senate. The Senate has concurred in the Assembly amendment to the Lyon child labor bill by which the minimum age for boys engaged in newspaper selling or other street trades was reduced from twelve to ten years. Assemblyman Phelps' bill relating to salaries and fees of officers of San Bernardino county passed. Assemblyman Avey's bill proposing a $12,000,000 bond issue to complete the construction of the state highway system and mountain laterals, passed the House, the vote being 44 to 4. If favorable action is taken in the Senate the proposition will go before the people.
