BAGK TO PARTY,
REPUBLICANS RALLY
GRAND OLD PARTY WILL ELECT HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES THIS YEAR
FREE TRADE ADMINISTRATION WILL RECEIVE SEVERE JOLT FROM THE PACIFIC
It will take 281 votes to control the next house of representatives at Washington. The republicans now figure that they will have that number and more.
Their present reckoning gives to them over 220 members, which would give a working majority. So far as it can be reckoned at this distance from election, they are confident of having 222 republicans in the next house, which would leave 213 to be divided among the democrats and what other parties are to be represented.
Such estimate is based, of course, upon an extensive dwindling of the progressive vote. With that element entirely out of the way, the margin would be much greater. The history of the past year gives abundant reason why this falling off in the progressive party strength can be reckoned with certainty.
Every section of the country has declared that the progressive vote is diminishing with each day of time. In New York state it has already fallen off one-half. The votes cast for Roosevelt in 1912 were double in number those cast for the progressive nominee for chief justice of the court of appeals last fall.
The New Jersey congressional election in April showed almost an absotten districts in the state now represented by democrats in which the republicans have "a fighting chance," and in twelve of these the contest is expected to be successful.
Pennsylvania is looked to for a change of ten members, three at large and seven from districts. In this case there will be a retirement of several of the progressive members of the house. The effect of the new tariff upon Pennsylvania will be sufficient to make the battle a straight-out contest between protection and its opponents and on such an issue there can be no doubt of the result.
Illinois will send nine republicans as her contribution to the new membership that is to take control of the house. There will be a hard battle waged to make this number fifteen.
The situation in California is so changed from what it was in 1912 and the republican movement there is constantly growing so strong that out of the five districts, at present either democratic or progressive in their congressional representation, in which vigorous contest is to be made, it is confidently predicted that four will be carried by the republicans.
The republicans will fight to the finish to regain control of 163 districts now represented by democrats. They enter the fight confident of success in at least 93 of these districts. There are at present 129 republican members of the house of representatives. This gain of 93 would give the republicans a membership of 222 and control of the house.
In addition to the prospective republican victories in districts now represented by democrats the republicans should gain seats in the senate in Oregon, Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, Maryland, Nevada, Oklahoma and Arizona.

Every section of the country has declared that the progressive vote is diminishing with each day of time. In New York state it has already fallen off one-half. The votes cast for Roosevelt in 1912 were double in number those cast for the progressive nominee for chief justice of the court of appeals last fall.
The New Jersey congressional election in April showed almost an absolute disappearance of the progressive vote and in a district which gave Roosevelt nearly 12,000 votes in 1912.
Maryland shows the same state of things. The 58,000 votes for Roosevelt for president fell to 7,000 for the progressive candidate for United States senator in 1913. Iowa furnishes a test of the Middle West. In a special election held last February in one of the congressional districts the progressive vote was less than 4,000. The progressive vote in the district in 1912 was over 15,000.
At the recent primaries in Oregon held two weeks ago, the republican registration was 120,000; democratic 41,000; progressive 11,000. Ralph E. Williams was re-elected a member of the republican national committee from Oregon by a plurality of 12,000. Williams was a member of the subcommittee of seven which organized the national convention of 1912.
In South Dakota United States Senator Crawford was defeated for renomination in the recent primaries by Congressman Burke. Mr. Burke's plurality was over 10,000. Senator Crawford was a progressive in 1912; Mr. Burke was a loyal republican. South Dakota was one of the two states in which Mr. Roosevelt's friends, finding themselves temporarily in control of the machinery of the republican party, refused to relinquish the republican column on the ballot, so that the republicans were in effect disfranchised.
The other state in which the loyal republicans were denied the right to vote for the candidates of their party was California. Governor Johnson and Mr. Roosevelt ran on the republican ticket in that state. Johnson did not renounce the republican party until in December, 1913, when he declared his candidacy for the governorship as a progressive. Since then California has conducted a biennial registration, the result of which, as reported by the secretary of state on June 6, is as follows:
Republican ... 347,861
Democratic ... 185,107
Progressive ... 172,064
Socialist ... 46,777
Prohibition ... 26,506
In addition to victories in districts now represented by democrats the republicans should gain seats in the senate in Oregon, Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, Maryland, Nevada, Oklahoma and Arizona.
TRUCK CAPSIZES WITH STUDENTS
Many Have Narrow Escape From Serious Injury or Death
A truck containing fourteen students of Pomona college on the way from Claremont to Laguna where they will study at the marine laboratory, was overturned early Friday morning on Chapman avenue near West Orange. It happened about 100 feet east of the Santa Ana bridge where the embankment is ten feet high.
In turning out to pass an approaching automobile the driver of the truck got his out side wheels off the paved strip of the highway, into soft sand, and in an instant the truck tripped. By mere good fortune a telephone pole was so situated that when the truck was upon its side and going over, it was brought to a stop.
There was a wild scramble of collegians. The earth was soft, and thanks to the telephone pole, few were injured. Miss Lois Clancy received some bruises. Mexicans who were working on the road helped right the truck, which proceeded on its journey.
Those in the party were Mrs. Clancy, Misses Lucy and Lois Clancy, Mark Moles, Happy Hoover, Folly La Follette, "Prexie" Hamilton, Hugh Jones, Edith Gillette, Paul Lichti, Leon Gardner, Jack Rich and Prof. Miller.
WALNUT CROP IMPROVED
Walnut growers in Los Angeles county are feeling much elated over present crop conditions. Early in over present crop conditions. Early in the spring the outlook was not so very good. The blossom was light and much of this was hurt by the heavy rains. Cool weather and other favorable conditions since have caused the walnuts on the trees to show a surprising growth and indications are that the crop of first grade will exceed very much the crop of the same kind last year. At this time last year crop indications were for a bumper year. There were more walnuts on the trees than for many seasons past. Hot weather baked the hulls onto the shells and put about half of the crop if not more in class number two, which after the harvest caused serious difficulties in marketing and brought protests from all parts of the United States on account of grades. With another month of fair weather, the greatest danger will be over, and opportunity for making prices will be present. The crop is estimated at 10,000 tons.
Walnuts in Orange county this year will be 30 per cent short of a normal crop, from present indications, according to Arthur Staley's estimate. Mr. Staley is the secretary and manager of the Fullerton-Placentia association.

Johnson did not renounce the republican party until in December, 1913, when he declared his candidacy for the governorship as a progressive. Since then California has conducted a biennial registration, the result of which, as reported by the secretary of state on June 6, is as follows:

Prohibition ... 26,506
Declined to state ... 04,875
Miscellaneous ... 1,875
Total ... 845,117
The whole vote cast in California in 1912 was 673,527. It would seem that in California and South Dakota retributive justice was about to have its inning.
The registration figures tell the same story, whether it is in New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon or California. Everywhere the trend is the same and the movement back to the republican party is strong and constant.
The three states that are counted upon to make the greatest numerical gains in the next house are New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois. New York is expected to send an even dozen more republicans to the next congress. The districts outside of Greater New York will be practically solidly republicans. The Canadian reciprocity issue is no more, and that was the cause of an immense progressive vote in 1912. It was an anti-Taft vote on the part of the farming sections because of this policy of his administration. The New York city districts will show a change of several members. There are eight baked the hulls onto the shells and put about half of the crop if not more in class number two, which after the harvest caused serious difficulties in marketing and brought protests from all parts of the United States on account of grades. With another month of fair weather, the greatest danger will be over, and opportunity for making prices will be present. The crop is estimated at 10,000 tons.
Walnuts in Orange county this year will be 30 per cent short of a normal crop, from present indications, according to Arthur Staley's estimate. Mr. Staley is the secretary and manager of the Fullerton-Placentia association of walnut growers and is well informed regarding conditions in this county.
From reports received by him it is believed the crop in Los Angeles county will be from 30 to 40 per cent above the normal production, while Santa Barbara and Ventura counties will probably be 10 per cent short.
He estimates the total crop for California this year at 11,000 tons. The annual consumption of walnuts in this country is about 30,000 tons, the demand in excess of the home crop being supplied by importations from France and European countries.
GRAFT WALNUTS ON OAK
Experiments recently completed show that English walnuts may be successfully grafted upon live oaks, says the Sacramento Bee.
The experiment first made by the late E. W. Price near his home in West Point, Calaveras county, was successful from every standpoint, and extensive plans are being made to graft over live oak forests in Calaveras county. Hundreds of trees are to be grafted.
W. A. Moore, contractor, has secured the job of building the addition to the Broadway school, his bid being $13,-250. Four new rooms will be added and the old building remodeled. A furnace will also be installed.

Alaska May Produce Oil
Apparently the world's possible resources of petroleum have not nearly been discovered, to say nothing of being opened or developed. There is every reason, according to geological and other sharps, for expecting that large areas in Alaska will be found productive oil in commercial quantities and conditions. INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF VITICULTURE
In a preliminary announcement of the International Congress of Viticulture, to be held in San Francisco June 7, 1915, it is stated that the committee organization had been offered a hall and committee rooms for the sessions of the congress by the Panama-Pacific Exposition Commission, the commission leaving it optional with the congress to meet in the city or at the exposition grounds. As it was thought that the sessions will prove more successful if held in the city, the use of a hall in the new Auditorium on Market Street was accepted. The committee on transportation will plan to have a special train run from New York City to San Francisco for the accommodation of eastern and foreign delegates. At a meeting of the commission held in New York City in January committees were organized and chairmen elected.

BIG BEAN CROP
Establishing a new record for bean production, California will this year produce 2,180,000 sacks of nutritious limas and black-eyes for use throughout the United States, according to freight traffic officials, says the Los Angeles Tribune.
The reputation of the California bean is so excellent that Uncle Sam is keeping his eye on the local output with a view of buying part of it for the soldiers and sailors. Southern California will produce about 600,000 sacks of beans. There are usually 90 pounds in a sack. The price of beans is higher than usual and likely to rise, as there is a brisk demand. One property, the Irvine ranch near Santa Ana, has 21,000 acres planted in beans this year, making it the largest bean ranch in the world. Most of the ground is in limas.
THE POLL TAX AMENDMENT
Section 12 of Article XIII of the Constitution of the State of California, reads as follows: "The legislature shall provide for the levy and collection of an annual poll tax of not less than two dollars on every male inhabitant of this state over twenty-one, and under sixty years of age, except paupers, idiots, insane persons, and Indians not taxed. Said tax shall be paid into the state school fund."
The amendment to the foregoing section, proposed by initiative petition, reads as follows: "Section 12. No poll or head tax for any purpose whatsoever shall be levied or collected in the State of California."
