UNIVERSITY WILL GRANT 900 DEGREES GRADUATING CLASS CONSISTS OF 600 AT THIS YEAR'S COMMENCEMENT A STRENUOUS WEEK, BEGINNING ON FRIDAY, MAY 8TH, IS BEING ANTICIPATED BY STUDENTS Nine hundred degrees will be granted by the University of California at its 51st commencement, in the Greek theater at 9:45 A.M. Wednesday, May 13th. The graduating class will consist of over 600, as compared with 329 ten years ago, while the other 300 are recipients of higher and professional degrees. The commencement festivities will begin May 8th with the annual senior extravaganza, "King Henry the First," written by Lawrence Levy, with original music by Mildred Smith, Ralph M. Eaton, L. K. Newfield, Kurt Steindorff, and Roswell G. Ham. The farewell banquet of the senior men will be held on the campus, in Senior Hall, a picturesque log cabin on the banks of Strawberry Creek, on Saturday evening, May 9. The senior women banquet the same evening. Class reunions will be held commencement week by the classes of '74, '84, '85, '86, '87, '94, '03, '04, '05, '06 and '13. The baccalaureate sermon will be preached in the Greek theater on Sunday afternoon, May 10, by Rev. Albert W. Palmer of Plymouth Congregational church, Oakland. The graduating class will go in pilgrimage on Monday morning, May 11. Representative seniors will say words of farewell at well-beloved spots on the campus, such as North Hall steps, the Library, and Hearst Hall. The senior ball will occur Monday evening. The annual address before Phi Beta Kappa, the scholarship honor society, will be delivered on Tuesday afternoon, tremendous annual loss of eggs is due to the fertile egg. The department specialists advise that on the 1st of May all male birds be either killed, sold, or confined until the 1st of December, or as late as the 1st of January in some localities, inasmuch as it is not necessary to the laying qualities of a hen that a rooster be maintained in the flock. Moreover, his presence during those months means fertile egg, which mean bad eggs and the consequent loss to the producer and the consumer. BASTANCHURY WILL DEVELOP RANCH Are Setting an Additional 500 Acres to Oranges During the past three years the Bastanchury Ranch Company has set 500 acres to oranges, and walnuts at a cost of about $150,000. This company is now starting to set out another 500 acres to oranges and has already developed enough water to irrigate the entire tract. The cost of fitting out the next 500 acres will be $100,000. It will take about two years to complete the work now commenced. One of the pumping plants erected to irrigate the young trees which were put out last year cost over $20,000. The company now has three modern pumping plants in all, which lift enough water to irrigate at least 1,000 acres. The Bastanchury family owns 2,700 acres, having the entire tract between the Santa Fe in Fullerton and the Pacific Electric in La Habra Valley. According to plans under way this company will spend several hundred thousand dollars during the next few years in improving this property. While some of the land is under lease for oil, much work will be carried on in the way of development in the fruit and farming sections of this immense tract. Some weeks ago this company offered to give a free right of way from Fullerton to the Murphy oil lease. The city will no doubt accept it, as officials are now working on the proposition of opening a new road from Fullerton. E. Yockey of Garden Grove brought suit against John W. Corbin for $600 rent last Wednesday, he named the Anaheim Sugar Company as a defendant. In fact, the suit is directed mainly against the sugar factory. Yockey alleges in his complaint, filed by attorneys, that C. S. Holt, field manager of the Anaheim factory, introduced him to John W. Corbin, and advised Yockey to lease 73 acres of land to Corbin. It is stated that Holt represented that Corbin was an expert beet grower, honest and responsible financially. It was agreed that for 40 acres $15 an acre should be paid, and one-fourth the crop on whatever of the remaining acreage was put in. Fifty acres was planted. Under the lease Corbin agreed to give an order on the factory for the cash rent. That order was secured, and was presented to the factory. Yockey got a letter from L. H. Multer of the factory stating that the order NAVELS CLEANED UP Orange county will ship but few more oranges until the last of May. The navel oranges in the county have about been cleaned out. It is believed that the shipping of Valencia oranges will begin later than usual. While some could be sent out next week, the chances are that growers will hold back with Valencias until the northern navels are cleared away. Reports state that other sections of the state still have 2,500 carloads of navels on hand, to go out in the next two or three weeks. While navels are on the market, high prices for Valencias cannot be expected. This county makes a specialty of Valencia oranges. When the shipments begin they will continue into October. ADVANCE DATA FOR 1913 At the present stage of the work of collecting data regarding the mineral production in California during the year 1913, by the state mining bureau, it is evident that the final total will exceed the most sanguine preliminary estimates that were made at the beginning of the year. To obtain complete returns from the thousands of mineral producers in the state is a task which requires a great deal of time, and as has been the case in past years, final results in every detail cannot possibly be in hand before July. Answers to inquiries, as sent out by State Mineralogist Hamilton, have been received from all the operators in several branches of the mineral industry however, and such figures as are complete at this time are tabulated. It augurs well for the future prosperity of the state at large that the gains here indicated give every evidence of holding true in practically all items on the list of 40-odd mineral substances which California annually produces in commercial quantity. Following is tabulation of substances concerning which final returns for 1913 are available: to date: Substance Amount Value Cement bbls...6,167,806 $7,743,024 Chromite tons...1,180 12,700 Coal tons...25,198 85,809 Graphite lbs...2,500 Infusorial earth...8,595 35,760 Iron ore tons...2,343 4,485 Marble cu. ft.*41,654 113,282 Pyrites tons...79,000 218,537 Pumice tons...90 2,000 Tungsten ore tons...7,592 234,673 Total $8,450,295 Increase in value of above ten minima street to North Clay hereby established as follow section of the northerly said twenty (20) foot alley and easterly one hundred fifty-one hundredths (151.80); at the intersection property line of said alley extended easterly and curb line of North Clay grade shall be one hundred sixty-one hundredths (152) tersection of the southerly of said thirty (30) foot easterly and the westerly North Claudin street, the one hundred fifty-two and dredths (152.50). Multer of the factory stating that the order had been filed and would be attended to. Yockey wanted to go east, and was told that his money would be held for him. Yockey declares he was never paid, and that he has since learned that when Holt brought Corbin to Yockey, Corbin was heavily in debt to the sugar factory and that the factory knew he was not financially responsible. Judgment for $600 is asked against the factory as well as against Corbin. ROOSTER DAY In the interest of the fertile egg the poultry specialists have started a campaign for the elimination of the rooster among poultry flocks during the seasons between May 1 and December 1. In this connection Saturday, May 16, has been set aside by the people as rooster day in Kentucky and Tennessee, when every poultry dealer in these states has agreed to pay the same prices for roosters as they do for hens and pullets. There is an enormous loss in eggs as the result of the fertile egg, especially during the summer and fall months, and it is for this reason the department recommends that the rooster be kept away from the hens during these seasons. Fertile eggs spoil very quickly when subjected to the ordinary methods of handling on the farm and when marketed during the hot summer months under adverse conditions. Infertile eggs will keep in good condition in temperatures which will cause fertile eggs to rot. It is estimated that one-third of the following concerning which final returns for 1913 are available, to date: Substance Amount Value Cement, bbls...6,167,806 $7,743,024 Chromite, tons...1,180 12,700 Coal, tons...25,198 85,809 Graphite, lbs...2,500 25 Infusorial earth...8,595 35,760 Iron ore, tons...2,343 4,485 Marble, cu. ft...41,654 113,282 Pyrites, tons...79,000 218,537 Pumice, tons...90 2,000 Tungsten ore, tons...7,592 234,673 Total ... $8,450,295 Increase in value of above ten mineral substances over 1912, $1,819,610. STATE LIBRARY SCHOOL The California State Library School in Sacramento, the first library school of its kind in California, is making preparation for the opening of its second year of work, in September, 1914. The progress of the present class has fully justified the establishment of the school, and to provide students for the coming year, announcement is now made of a second entrance examination to be held in Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles on May 14, 1914, to be given by the California State Civil Service Commission. Candidates will be examined in literature and general information; history and current events. Education and experience are taken into consideration, and applicants are also graded as to personality and fitness for the work. The regular course of this school is one year, and the next term will extend from September 23d to June. The time before this examination is short, and those who may be interested are requested to communicate without delay with the state librarian, for further information and the necessary application blanks. Persons desiring to enter this examination must file completed applications not later than May 11, 1914. Facing a tax of $100 on every $1,000 worth of property if the municipality loses, the people of Long Beach through the city council have engaged a formidable array of lawyers to defend the city against damage suits arising from the collapse of the Auditorium May 24 of last year. The total of suits filed is $2,594,850.22, with a prospect of half a million more in claims being added. While Judge Monroe in Los Angeles never misses a chance to slam the efficacy of Los Angeles weddings performed in Santa Ana, the number of persons who go to Santa Ana to be married is constantly increasing. Take the month of April. In 1913 that month produced 119 marriages. In 1914 the total was 131. Thursday was a real good day for licenses, for County Clerk Williams and his deputies gave out at $2 per 13 licenses, and not one in the bunch seemed to feel at all unlucky. F. B. Smith with Leonard Evens of Anaheim as attorney, has brought suit against W. D. Livingston for $484.85, which amount is alleged to be due on a bill of $709.85 for nursery stock.
