THURSDAY, APRIL 80 TAXPAYERS' LEAGUE FORMED IN COUNTY Need of Such an Organization Felt for Months—Officers Chosen Some time ago a number of taxpayers of Orange county came together in Santa Ana and formed an organization that will be known as "The Taxpayers' League of Orange County." For a long time these persons, and many others, as has since been learned, have felt the need of just such an organization that the taxpayers might come together to discuss matters of mutual interest along the line of assessments, collections and disbursements of money raised by taxation. Organization for co-operation under existing conditions is necessary to obtain desired results. This is proven by the many successful organizations in existence, especially those for commercial purposes. There are the growers of oranges, walnuts, and other products of the soil; then the merchants, the bankers and the men of your craft, are all organized, organized for mutual protection. Then why not the taxpayers, that great universal army who furnish the "sinews" that keep governments in existence? The League was organized with 17 charter members (so-called); they elected Jacob Felder of West Chapman avenue of Orange, as president, and Wm. Feldner of the same place, was selected to act as secretary. Since organization there have been many applications for membership; up to this date there have been 27 applications received to be voted on at the next meeting. The League meets on the first Saturday of each month at 2:30 P.M., city hall, Santa Ana, until permanent place can be arranged for. It is hoped that every part of the county will be largely represented in the councils of the League; all taxpayers who are in sympathy with the movement are invited to attend the meetings. If those interested will write the secretary they will be furnished with application blanks and given such information. Victoria's memory realize that the 23rd day of May is not her birthday, they are going to band together for complete enjoyment of her anniversary. "Extraordinary" and "safety" are to be the watch-words of the committee in charge of the performances. Complete plans are being made by the Empire Day committee. These plans as they become positive of successful completion, will be made public. The business men of Venice, Ocean Park and Santa Monica in the guidance of the secretaries of chambers of commerce of this district, will arrange and organize a gigantic parade for this festival. Owing to the fact that the chambers of commerce allied under the direction of A. R. Fraser and C. W. McLeod, have taken the expense of this affair upon their own shoulders, the executive committee of the Empire Day celebration announces that they will have more time to devote to other details for the big day's program. At the last meeting of the general committee, a vote of thanks was tendered to the business men of the Santa Monica bay district and promises of any assistance whatever, were made. This committee authorized the publication of an official program, in which will be recorded the full details of the day's events. Authorized agents appointed by the executive committee, are instructed to sell space in this program as a business proposition, the program is very worthy and it will make a splendid souvenir of the day. MORE BIDS FOR HIGHWAY WORK Supervisors Receive Propositions for Paving Another Mile The board of supervisors Thursday received three bids for the construction of a mile of paved road between McPherson and El Modena. The bids were: W. S. Martin, $5,000; D. & C. Construction Co., $6,999.33; Mercereau Bridge & Construction Co., $7,272. These bids were taken under advisement until April 28. This is a road to be built by the county independent of ed poles on the main ing season. FULLY Glen C. This is a road to be built by the county independent of the county highway commission's plans, and is a part of the road to be paved to the County Park. On the request of the county highway commission May 6 was set as the date for receiving bids for the construction of dirt approaches to the Talbert bridge. The county highway commission reported that of the bids received for building section 1 of the Santa Ana Newport Beach road, Oscar Ford's bid was the lowest, and the contract was awarded to him at $39,821.31. Ford is mayor of Riverside. He built the Seviers Canyon road. By resolution the board changed the plans for the bridge across the mouth of Anaheim Bay. An opening for the passage of boats will be 60 feet in width instead of 40 feet. Petitions have been presented in an effort to get the county to build the bridge south of the P. E. bridge instead of north of it. The supervisors want the bridge to remain where it is proposed by the county since it will then join the county road at both ends. A switch to the south side would necessitate crossing the railroad. The hearing of the A. H. Lyon petition was continued to May 6. A license to do fumigating and spraying was issued to C. E. McFadden of Placentia and for spraying to Morgan Morago of Whittier. GOVERNMENT ADVOCATES USE OF LODGEPOLE PINE Lodgepole pine, of which there are abundant stands in both the Rocky Mountain and Coast Ranges, when treated with preservatives ought to serve in the place of red cedar as a pole timber, says the department of agriculture in a bulletin just issued on Rocky Mountain woods for telephone poles. The rapid extension of telephone and power lines in the west is making the question of pole supply one of increasing importance. Western red cedar, for long the standard pole timber of the western states, grows only in Washington, Oregon, and northern Idaho; and in the states south of that region its cost is high, owing to the great distance over which it must be transported. In addition, the heavy drain on the supply promises to result in increasingly higher prices. The tendency of lodgepole pine to decay rapidly when in contact with the ground has so far kept it out of the field as a competitor of the cedar, according to the department, but the general adoption of preservative treatment by railroad and telephone companies changes the situation. At an addition-selected to act as secretary. If those interested will write the secretary they will be furnished with application blanks and given such information as may be desired. Object of the League To correct existing evils and equalities in taxation, promote economy in public expenditures, both state and local, and to formulate and announce the most progressive economic thought and administrative experience available for the correct guidance of public opinion, legislative and administrative action on all questions pertaining to state and local taxation. Membership Any taxpayer within the county of Orange, state of California, may become a member of this League by subscribing to the articles of the League and upon affirmative vote of a majority of the membership committee, except public office holders, either state, county or municipal, who shall not be eligible to membership in this League while holding office. Peterson and William Meyers, arrested on complaint of County Sealer George McPhee, pleaded not guilty to selling short weight meat, and their trials were set for April 28. In default of $250 bail each, the three men went to jail. These men were peddling small shoulders around Santa Ana. McPhee learned that they sold one to Mrs. G. W. Welshrod as a six-pound ham when it weighed but little over four pounds. The investigations of County Sealer McPhee and City Marshal Jernigan show to their satisfaction that the visitors were working a fraud upon the housewives. To begin with, the meats offered for sale were not hams, but were shoulders. Ham sells for 30 cents a pound and shoulders for 14, in the local markets. The enterprising visitors represented the articles to be ham, and sold it for 22 cents. The shoulders were shipped here in bulk by express. A few shoulders at a time were loaded on a wagon and peddled. The salesmen represented that they were ranchers living near Santa Ana, and that they had raised the hogs, killed the pigs and cured the hams. They said the meat was sugar cured. To make the story look real, they said that they had had a contract with a Santa Ana restaurant, but the restaurant then down, and since the resturant refused to take the meat, they were selling it around town at 22 cents a pound. The peddlers had a pair of scales on which they weighed the meat. The officers are satisfied that the scale is a short-weight scale. However, the peddlers managed to hide it, and it cannot be tested. McPhee has weighed two shoulders, sold by the peddlers, and in each instance it was far short of the weight quoted by the peddlers. EMPIRE DAY All Britishers in Southern California are planning to participate in the immense Empire Day celebration which is to be held in the Santa Monica Bay district, Ocean Park being the central point, on the 23rd day of May. G. W. L. Young, chairman of the executive committee, declares that of the hundred thousand Britishers in this region, at least 50 per cent will be present. While all those who revere Queen ANAHEIM GAZETTE FULLERTON Glen C. Crandall has informed the city trustees that the Knights of Pythias lodge is making preparations for celebrating the Fourth of July. He requested that official approval be given, together with a promise of the city's co-operation and financial assistance. He said the lodge would want a concession for the use of streets and the city park. The Chamber of Commerce will also be asked for aid. The trustees are inclined to favor the movement for a great day here on the Fourth, but are not prepared to say just what part the city can take in financing the undertaking. A motion was adopted to defer action until the next meeting of the board. The Placentia Orange Growers' Association of Placentia will start again today packing Mediterranean Sweets and St. Michaels with 40 packers and about 60 pickers. The fruit is of fine quality. Several loads of oranges were delivered in town yesterday. This association has already shipped 150 carloads of oranges this season, making a total for the four plants of 400 cars, and more to follow. E. E. Vogele has set out on his Placentia ranch a new grove of 676 Valencias, with a wind break on two sides of Arizona cypress trees. He has just concluded the planting of acacia trees on both sides of the block. This section was favored with a slow, soaking rain lately. ROAD INSPECTION H. A. Wassum, of Santa Ana, and W. T. Brown, of Fullerton, as committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, on Friday were with the San Bernardino county supervisors and a number of citizens of Chino on a trip of inspection over a part of the proposed road over the hills between Chi-no and Olinda. San Bernardino has finished about half of its road to the county line, and will be through it by June 1. A gang of prisoners is being worked. The road is a 20-foot road with no grade poles on the market during the coming season. IN THE SUPERIOR COURT Of the County of Orange, State of California. Brown, of Fullerton, as a committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, on Friday were with the San Bernardino county supervisors and a number of citizens of Chino on a trip of inspection over a part of the proposed road over the hills between Chino and Olinda. San Bernardino has finished about half of its road to the county line, and will be through with it by June 1. A gang of prisoners is being worked. The road is a 20-foot road with no grade over 4 per cent. It will be scenic, as it winds around oaks and sycamores. The party went to the divide and looked down on Orange county. This county has given instructions for the survey of its part of the road, and there is little question but that this county will complete its work in time for the use of the road this summer. Orange county has about three miles to build, while San Bernardino county has eight. This county's expenditure will be about $3,000 and San Bernardino's $8,000. TIMBER LAND OWNERS RENEW FIRE CO-OPERATION From the Trinity national forest comes the announcement that the Sugar Pine Investment Company and the Bayside Lumber Company have just agreed for the third year to cooperate with the government in protecting their timber holdings from fire. During the two years that such cooperation has been in effect fires have been confined to less than one acre in the districts protected. During the season of 1913, which was unprecedented in the number of lightning fires, the 36 fires which started in one district were put out before they reached an average size of 120 feet square. Since these and certain other companies in California have proved by experience that their forests can be protected at small cost by means of co-operation, the government foresters believe that in the near future practically all California timber owners will take similar measures to safeguard their forests. BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Routine Business of Local Interest Transacted Demands on the hospital and highway funds were allowed as read. An application was filed by the Amalgamated Oil Company for a franchise for water pipe line and said franchise offered for sale on May 26, 1914, at 11 A.M. The matter of the sale of the El Toro school district bonds was continued to May 6, 1914, at 10 A.M. The application of Morgan Morago and Clarence E. McFadden for fumigating licenses were granted. The hearing of the viewers' report on the petition of A. H. Lyon, et al., for a county road in Tustin road district, was continued to May 6, 1914, at 10 A.M. Bids were received for the improvement of East Chapman avenue road and said bids taken under advisement her verified petition in this court, setting forth facts from which it appears that H. E. Gardner, as assignee of William L. Gardner, is entitled to specific performance of a contract made by said William L. It is ordered that Friday, the 15th day of May, 1914, and the court room of Department 1 of said court at the City of Santa Ana, in the said County of Orange, State of California, be, and the same is hereby appointed as the time and place for the hearing of said petition; and that notice thereof be published in the Anahiem Gazette, a newspaper published in said county and state, for at least four successive weeks before the said hearing. Dated this 10th day of April, 1914. Z. B. WEST, Judge of the Superior Court. 4-16-5 COMMERCE POSSIBLE ON LINES NOW OUT OF THE QUESTION. The reduction of time was brought about by the building of the new $3,000,000 steamships of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the inauguration of a new trans-Pacific service from Vancouver to Manila, Philippine islands, via Japanese and Chinese ports. On June 11 the Empress of Russia, sister ship to the Empress of Asia, the two largest and fastest steamships on the Pacific, will be sent to Manila from Vancouver via Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki. These steamers will cut the time from the Pacific Coast of North America to Manila to 17 days as against 28 days, the fastest time on any existing schedule, from any port on the Pacific Coast. The Empresses of Russia and Asia are each 593 feet in length and 68 feet in breadth and have a gross tonnage of 18,850 with a displacement of 30,625 tons. They have developed more than 22 knots on the measured mile and have a sea-going speed of 19 knots. The Empress of Russia has the record for the fastest trip across the Pacific. GOES TO PEN FOR WIFE'S CRIME The indecision of Clifford R. White as to what his plea should be in answer to the charge of receiving stolen goods, led Judge Densmore to suggest that the court enter a plea for him during a session of the superior court at Riverside. The wife, Mabel White, was sentenced a few days ago to a year in San Quentin for burglarizing the home of J. Drew Funk of Beaumont diamonds and jewelry to the value of nearly $400. She pleaded guilty to the charge and attempted to exonerate her husband. White did all in his power to exonerate himself and although admitting having received the jewelry from his wife, maintained that it was the intention to return it to its rightful owner. A peculiar feature of the case is that White caused an advertisement to be inserted in a local paper announcing the jewelry as having been "found," and that it would be returned to the party presenting satisfactory proof of ownership. The couple did not remain in the city, however, but went Santa Ana where they were arrested. Notice to Creditors Estate of J. M. Cole, Deceased.
