WALNUTS IN THE EAST
California Product Will Grace Many Christmas Tables—Bring $2,500,000
Southern California walnuts are making the eyes of the French nut growers stick out, while the Italian raisers tug at their "moustaccios" with amazement. It is the wide-spread recognition of the supremacy of the walnut in this territory which is causing the foreign growers concern. The delicious nut will gladden Christmas tables in all parts of the United States. This is the fact to which the foreigners object.
Nine thousand tons were grown in this district this year. Every one of the walnuts has been sold. The receipts total about $2,500,000.
IN AND ABOUT THE CITY
Geo. H. Warren, of Buena Park, was a visitor in town the latter part of the week.
Morris Smith was in town from his Orangethorpe ranch on Saturday afternoon.
Victor Schumacher was in town the first of the week from his ranch on the north side.
Mrs. Frances Lyon and Miss Margaret Higgins were guests some days ago of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Helmsen.
Attorney Ames transacted legal business in the superior court at Santa Ana the first of the week.
Timmy Carroll was in town the first of the week from the west end, wear-
raisers tug at their "moustaccios" with amazement. It is the wide-spread recognition of the supremacy of the walnut in this territory which is causing the foreign growers concern. "Southern California is producing about 99 per cent of the walnuts grown for commercial purposes in America, said Fred I. Hazzard, president of the Southern California Walnut Growers' Association, in Los Angeles the other day. "The walnuts grown here are noted for their peculiar excellence of flavor. They are known as the soft-shell English variety, but the words 'Southern California' added to the description have a wonderful effect upon the demand.
"The walnut belt extends from Los Angles northward 125 miles to Galeta, southward 60 miles to Capistrano and eastward 25 miles to Walnut. Two or three carloads are produced in Central California and two or three more in Oregon and Washington. Only the very choicest walnuts from the Sorrento district, Italy, and those from Grenoble, France, can approach in flavor and beauty the nuts from this district."
About 25,000 acres are planted to walnuts here. Four counties have flourishing groves. Nine hundred carloads have been shipped East this season.
Throughout the Eastern states a few walnuts for home consumption are grown successfully, but there is no output for commercial purposes. The trees there are hardwood, whereas here they are of the soft variety. About 94 per cent of the trees are seedlings and 6 per cent are buds. There are very few pecan nuts raised in this state. The Texas and Mexican pecans are scarce and prices are higher than ever this year.
