PROFITS OF FIELD TO BE LARGELY INCREASED NOTED SOIL EXPERT VISITS HERE, TALKS OF IMPROVED FARMING METHODS SCIENTIFIC SOIL CULTURE BASIS OF FUTURE PROSPERITY OF COUNTRY Prof. Hardy W. Campbell of Lincoln, Neb., recognized the world over as the leading exponent of dry farming and scientific soil culture, after 32 years of work and research, asserts without fear of successful contradiction, and with ample proof to back his statements, that close adherence to scientific soil culture will double or perhaps treble the average profits from field now cultivated, and produce profitable crops on non-irrigable land. Professor Campbell was a guest of J. D. Lavin and J. S. Sheridan in this city last week. Don’t be amazed at this assertion, for a glance at many other branches of scientific research will disclose even more astounding development and improvement than this and all because some one is doing some thinking. The tiller of the soil pauses in his work to observe the flight of the modern flying machine and marvels at the genius that made it possible without realizing that under the plow point at his feet is a gold mine which, with but a minimum application of the science that built the flying machine would yield untold wealth. The time weary prospector, certain be, whether wheat or corn, or cotton, or citrus fruits, or peanuts. “The application of the Campbell system means the preparation of the seed and root bed to that end that it may contain the proper proportion of moisture and air for the liberation of the greatest amount of plant food, through the medium of heat and light. “In the semi-arid regions and in the irrigated districts, this means the storing of moisture in the soil in such a way to be available to the growing plants in the time of need. In the humid regions it may often mean ditching and drainage, but at all times and in all countries and under all conditions it means thorough tillage—a tillage adapted to the local existing conditions by that certain ideal physical condition of the soil may be obtained by which nature can do its best work. “Strange as it may seem vastly greater returns could have been obtained from many irrigated fields in the past had one-fourth to one-third the water been applied to the land if preceded and followed with the right kind of tillage at the right time; one of the greatest factors of scientific tillage is to regulate the per cent of both water and air in the soil. “If you doubt this just note almost any field of grain and observe the variation in growth. This is almost invariably due to a more ideal equalizing of air and water, or in other words the best and rankest growth is due to the fact that the soil carries nearer the right quantity of both air and water while the poorer spots may be due to too much or too little water or too much or too little air in the soil. The causes of these out of line conditions are many but almost invariably occur because the tiller of the soil does not know what to do, when to do it, or how it should be done. “Moisture stored in the soil below the surface between the growing sea- The tiller of the soil pauses in his work to observe the flight of the modern flying machine and marvels at the genius that made it possible without realizing that under the plow point at his feet is a gold mine which, with but a minimum application of the science that built the flying machine would yield untold wealth. The time weary prospector, certain in his own mind that his years of search have been wasted, threw his pick away with the intention of finally abandoning his search for gold. But the pick as it struck the ground uncovered a nugget of gold, resulting in the discovery of one of the richest gold mines in the Black Hills. "The man who owns land in California, Nevada, or any part of the West," said Mr. Campbell in an interview, "may be content with the crop he now harvests annually, but with the application of scientific crop culture he may duplicate the experience of the man who discovers a gold mine. Greater returns from the investment of labor and money is the human desire. A better understanding of the soil and its cultivation is the medium. "To plow, to sow, and to reap, are the three acts of the great agricultural drama as it has been played for 5000 years. It has rarely varied from the stereotyped formula. Generations have come upon the stage, have spoken their little lines, performed their little stunts and made their exits, with no marked change for the better, notwithstanding the fact that the quantity and quality of the products of the soil, regulate the magnitude and profits of all business enterprises, be they great or small. "To plow, to sow, and to reap has been for centuries the counterpart of Faith, Hope and Charity. With Faith our fathers plowed, with high Hope they sowed and trusted to the Charity of nature to reap. The plowed best they could, they sowed the seed, hoping for the best, and then trusted to the sun and fickle rain to bring the harvest. "Impaired tillage, or the scientific treatment of the soil, is of very recent origin. It came with the passing of the old regime—the regime of the 'man with the hoe.' To the ancient agricultural trinity, to plow, so sow and to reap, has been added 'to till,' these three, and a fourth, and the greatest of these is 'to till.'" "The tide has turned. The strenuous life of the industrial world is not only living its attraction and the clure of air and water, or in other words the best and rankest growth is due to the fact that the soil carries nearer the right quantity of both air and water while the poorer spots may be due to too much or too little water or too much or too little air in the soil. The causes of these out of line conditions are many but almost invariably occur because the tiller of the soil does not know what to do, when to do it, or how it should be done. "Moisture stored in the soil below the surface between the growing seasons is like cash deposited in the savings bank; it not only draws interest but enables the farmer to meet the demands that will later be made. While water is not the only necessary element in crop growing, yet all other elements are unavailable or worthless when there is a shortage of water. Water is the connecting link for all the other elements in plant life. Water is not only drink for the plant, but it is the vehicle that carries all food to the plant. Water is the base for all chemical action that is necessary for the liberation of plant foods. Air in the soil in proper quantities is just as vital as water; too little or too much of either throws the condition out of balance and prevents the most healthy and vigorous growth. "There are some farmers that are near the high limit of crop yield by irrigation, but by far the majority are not. They may irrigate too much and do not cultivate enough, but they fail because of a lack of knowledge of what to do to insure the best results. "The subject of scientific soil culture is of vital interest to the railroads for its more general application, not only because it means more business from increased yields of the fields now tilled, but also because of the stimulating effect of increased yields in the direction of bringing more farmers to the land, adding more acres to the constantly expanding tillable area. Not only are these important facts true, but scientific soil culture, when more generally understood and applied, will directly or indirectly benefit all interests." "The subject is of special interest to the country adjacent to the Pacific coast, where not only can the water now available for irrigation in the more arid sections be made to cover vastly more acres, but by proper and timely cultivation the greater part of the lands now irrigated may be made to produce an average yield more than double that now harvested. These facts point to the one conclusion. That the available tillable lands of the Pacific coast country are capable of making profitable farm homes for a vastly greater rural population, which means..." "Improved tillage, or the scientific treatment of the soil, is of very recent origin. It came with the passing of the old regime—the regime of the 'man with the hoe.' To the ancient agricultural trinity, to plow, so sow and to reap, has been added 'to till,' these three, and a fourth, and the greatest of these is 'to till.' "The tide has turned. The strenuous life of the industrial world is not only losing its attraction, and the 'lure of the city' no longer charms like evil, unblinking eye of the serpent, but the business world is beginning to realize that an increased and more staple agriculture is necessary to the further upbuilding of our towns and cities and the perpetuation of the solvency of our great grand institutions. The cry 'Back to the Land' is insistent and almost universal, but to make the cry vastly more effective, agricultural education in its highest degree must lead the movement of which scientific tillage is the base. "Campbell has given to the world what it never had before, a practical system of soil tillage, based on scientific principles and ideas. Today his name is a household word in parts of four continents. Moreover, by his system of the conservation of moisture, together with the equalizing of air and water by tillage with irrigation, and without irrigation by summer tillage, he has not only doubled the arable acreage of the world, but he has made it possible to double and treble the average crop yields of the lands now cultivated. "The fundamental principles of the Campbell system apply to every country, to every climate and to every kind of soil, no matter what plant may..."
