BISHOP CONATY'S THANKSGIVING SERMON
(Continued from page 1)
been close to the church, and the necessity of educating the children in their religion, as well as in secular matters, has always been clearly recognized. To all who value religion in education, the erection of a school in which positive religious principles are taught, has been considered as of vital importance.
"The church and the school are two great agents in the training for life, and the inspiration of one is the inspiration of the other. The greatest question in life is that of life itself. The foundation of character is in the understanding of the purposes of life, so that the proper agencies may be used in order to develop the essentials of true character. In our day, perhaps, more than at any other time in the history of mankind, the importance of general education has been recognized, and all rejoice in the splendid opportunities that are given to the people to have within their reach that clear knowledge of life and its duties which will fit them to fulfill the purposes of life.
"No matter how high sounding may be the praises of the systems of education, there is an essential element lacking if the entire purpose of education is not realized in the proper understanding of man's duty to his God as well as to his fellowmen. The real purpose of education is to solve the problem of life and to give us not only correct answers to all its questions, but to give us directions as to the means to be used in order to have the purposes of life fully realized.
"The child is the most sacred thing in life; it is a sacred trust from God to the parent, and negligence in the imposition of the child as to his rejuvenation of the parent merely, but that the child may be fitted for his duties in life, thereby realizing the purposes of creation in eternal happiness with God in heaven. There falls upon the parent the conscientious obligation to provide that education which will train the child not only in the business ways of life which are necessary for his sustenance, but also, and more particularly, in the ways of truth and in the practices of the religion of Christ.
"Today marked attention is given to the training of the body and to its development in the strength of physical manhood and womanhood. This is indeed needed that one may think correctly, and thus be able to intelligently express his thoughts, and take his place in the world of energy and activity, and win for himself the means by which to do his duty in society. There is no chance taken with the mental and physical development of the child. The latest word in education seems almost to exhaust itself in methods of mental and physical development. Why should the development of the soul be left to chance? Why should the religious training of the child be neglected? Is not the soul more valuable than the body? Character springs from the true development of the soul, which gives to mind and body that direction and finish by which the entire nature is developed, so that the whole nature of man comes under the influence of education, thus adjusting all his faculties to the purposes of life under the influence of religion. The spiritual side of a man's life demands religion as the one power that can train and direct the soul along the lines of God's eternal law.
"There is much wonder at the sacrifices Catholics make for their religious schools, whether academic or parochial, but few recognize that this work springs from the conscientious obligation which the Catholic parent feels toward his child. Many prejudices are excited against the Catholic school because of difference of religious belief. Catholics pay their taxes for the state schools, just as other citizens do, but feeling that the state schools do not give that atmosphere of positive religious belief which is the spiritual life of the Catholic, their conscientious responsibility to their children requires them to establish and maintain their own schools in which religious and..."
"The child is the most sacred thing in life; it is a sacred trust from God to the parent, and negligence in the instruction of the child as to his relations with God is most fatal. To us Christians the knowledge of life is clearly and distinctly made known by our Christian teaching, and we firmly believe that we come from God and that life is to be spent in serving God, in order that the reward of life in eternity may be obtained through fidelity to God's laws. Neglect that side of a child's instruction and you are permitting that child to go through life without understanding the real end of life, and consequently, in that respect, he will be as one blind or deformed.
"We hear a great deal in educational circles today of character development. We feel the need of men and women of character, who are able to withstand the trials and temptations of life, and who will be a lasting and permanent influence for good in the communities in which they live. We all understand the principle that character makes the man, develops the citizen, and contributes to society its real value. What will determine for us what constitutes character? What will aid us to acquire that character which we need? Character is not in the wealth one possesses, nor in the inventions one devises, nor it is fully found in physical beauty or in intellectual ability. Real character of a man is in the soul, which speaks through conscience, and directs life toward its purposes.
"The essential element in character is morality; that morality which speaks the truth and does the thing that is good; that has its face set against evil in any form; which rounds out and perfects the nature of man and makes him the good citizen because he is the good man. Morality does not come to us by school laws nor by legislative enactments, nor by the punishments of the courts. All these are but warnings against evil.
"Religion alone can lead us to morality. The spirit of conscience, truly instructed, can alone keep us in the lines of goodness and prevent us from falling into the ways of evil. Morality comes from God, for it is the observance of God's laws that makes for moral life, and religion is the teacher of the moral law. Religion gives sanctification to conduct and determines what is right and wrong, true and false, and leads man to be virtuous not because virtue is of itself beautiful, but because it is in accordance with the commandments of God, and obedience to it leads to-the perfection of life, and to temporal as well as to eternal life.
"The development of mind and body is largely a machine development. True character comes from soul development. Divorce religion from the school teaches Catholics make for their religious schools, whether academic or parochial, but few recognize that this work springs from the conscientious obligation which the Catholic parent feels toward his child. Many prejudices are excited against the Catholic school because of difference of religious belief. Catholics pay their taxes for the state schools, just as other citizens do, but feeling that the state schools do not give that atmosphere of positive religious belief which is the spiritual life of the Catholic, their conscientious responsibility to their children requires them to establish and maintain their own schools in which religious and secular knowledge unite in the proper training of the child. The very sacrifices which the church bids us make for our schools is an evidence not only of our love for education, but also of our conscientious belief that religion is essential to all true education. We recognize that our citizenship demands intelligence and morality. The citizen serves the state best who serves his God best, and the education which teaches us to do our best and helps us to do it, is a strength to the Republic and a safeguard to its permanence.
"We are all building for the future, and we know that our individual lives are the units of our national strength. No nation can live that has not the truth of God in it. No citizenship can possess that goodness which is essential, unless there be in the individual life the morality of God as taught us by Christ. This is our belief and in this belief we build our school, dedicate it to religion and science, and offer it to the community as an element for its present and future strength.
"This academy of St. Joseph's, under the direction of the Sisters of St. Dominic, comes into this community with a message of good will, and as an instrument in the education of those who may be confided to its care. It is blessed in the name of God, author of life, and it is commissioned in that same sacred name to teach life and how to fulfill its duties, overcome its difficulties, and develop true character among its children. 'Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it,' and unless the Lord be with us, all our efforts will fail. The children of today will be the men and women of tomorrow. The responsibilities which are ours today, will be theirs tomorrow. Woe to us, if we fail to properly fit them for that responsibility! In God we trust, in Him is our strength. He is our light and our life. Christ is our leader, the teacher of our life, the physician of our souls, our Divine Redeemer, our Lord and Master.
"The good nuns who will teach within these walls have consecrated their lives to the instruction of youth. They are proud to follow their great leader, St. Dominic, one of the master-minds of the world, one of the great instruments of God in the instruction and salvation of men, a name to conjure with, a name to recognize as a mighty power in the educational world of his day. Under his influence this school enters upon its mission of education, and the lessons to be taught within its walls are lessons that spring from the great truths of Christianity. God's blessing on its mission of goodness and truth and virtue! May this commence Catholics make for their religious schools, whether academic or parochial, but few recognize that this work springs from the conscientious obligation which the Catholic parent feels toward his child. falling into the ways of evil. Morality comes from God, for it is the observance of God's laws that makes for moral life, and religion is the teacher of the moral law. Religion gives sanction to conduct and determines what is right and wrong, true and false, and leads man to be virtuous not because virtue is of itself beautiful, but because it is in accordance with the commandments of God, and obedience to it leads to the perfection of life, and to temporal as well as to eternal life.
"The development of mind and body is largely a machine development. True character comes from soul development. Divorce religion from the school room and you expose the child to a one-sided education which leaves him without that training which is essential to the purposes of life—the knowledge of his God and the duties which he owes to Him and to his fellowmen. According to the education of today, man is supposed to be mere mind and matter. There is little attention paid to his spiritual being, and when that is neglected, conscience fails to have that development which is necessary for morality and for goodness.
"God is the author of the moral law, which man instinctively recognizes as a part of his nature, and hence comes the obligation to seek from God the knowledge of what that moral law is, and what it requires, as also the power to enable us to fulfill its obligations, and thus comply with the demands of our very nature, as required by God. We are not pagans, nor are we mere followers of philosophies and scientific theories. We are Christians and Catholics, and we believe that Christ is the great teacher of life, the author of our salvation, the minister of our reconciliation, the guide of our conscience, the determining influence in our conduct, and our leader in the way of true living. We believe that to do the will of God, as manifested to us through Christ, and his church, is the highest morality, and that the service of God is the noblest tribute which man can pay to his Creator.
"The responsibility of caring for the spiritual development of the child, as well as his secular development, falls upon the parent, to whom the child has been entrusted by God, not for the en-
EARLY HISTORY AS TOLD IN THE GAZETTE
PETITION TO ENLARGE ANAHEIM TOWNSHIP CIRCULATED FOR PRESENTATION TO BOARD
CHARTER FOR MASONIC LODGE ARRIVES—MR. LANGENBERGER DETAINED IN EUROPE
Taken From Gazette, Nov. 5, 1870
A petition, intended to be sent to the board of supervisors, is being extensively signed here, with a view of having the boundary lines of Anaheim township more clearly defined. We believe, however, that up to the present date, the board of supervisors have dignified us only as an imaginary, vague and indefinite locality, under the name of "precinct." We hope that the fossilized old reprobates, composing the board of supervisors, will wipe their "spec's" and carefully read our petition before consigning it to the waste basket.
Excitement—By private information received from Los Angeles, we learn that the Bank of California at San Francisco has been robbed of a large amount, and that the robbers are supposed to be on the steamer bound for Panama, now sailing off our neighborhood. The owners of the coast line steamers have ordered the Orizaba, which has just left Anaheim Landing, to put to sea and intercept the Panama steamer. There is great excitement in San Francisco.
Married—In this city on the 2d inst. by the Rev. L. P. Webber, at the residence of the bride's parents, H. D. Polhemus, Esq., to Emma M. Hanna, both of this city. No cards.
Born—In this city, October 30th, to the wife of Chas. F. Lehman, a daughter.
Planter Hotel Arrivals—Wm. Laughlin, J. Michener, San Juan Capistrano.
The Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria, now nearly 16 years old, has never yet worn anything but short dresses, even upon the grand occasion of a "drawing room" reception, when court trains are universal.

Race Track—The Anaheim race track, one-half mile from city limits, is being put in good order for the races, which are to take place on the 2nd of December, between horses owned by C. L. Smith and F. A. Goodrich. This track was lately laid off, one-half mile in circumference, and appropriate outbuildings will soon be erected by the proprietors.
The Vintage of Anaheim
It is estimated that between 700,000 and 800,000 gallons of red and white wines have been made in Anaheim this season; and of a better quality than that of any season heretofore. This amount is 250,000 gallons in excess of the yield of any previous year. Owing to the fine weather and extra condition of the grapes, this wine is already so thoroughly fermented that it will be in a marketable condition in 60 days. The grapes are all gathered and the wine making is finished for the season.
Preparations are being made for the immediate setting out of from 300 to 400 additional acres of vines. So, in
Excitement—By private mail received from Los Angeles, we learn that the Bank of California at San Francisco has been robbed of a large amount, and that the robbers are supposed to be on the steamer bound for Panama, now sailing off our neighborhood. The owners of the coast line steamers have ordered the Orizaba, which has just left Anaheim Landing, to put to sea and intercept the Panama steamer. There is great excitement in San Francisco.
"Hash" for San Diego"—By reference to our list of exports from Anaheim Landing it will be observed that the principal shipments to San Diego are breadstuffs. So it seems, at last, that the day has come when Anaheim feeds San Diego.
Delayed—a private letter received from A. Langenberger, Esq., now in Europe, states that he will not return befo a next May, he being detained to settle the estate of his father, recently deceased.
Broke Jail—During the week, three prisoners confined in the city calaboose, got free from their manacles, broke down the door and fled during the night.
Departure of Mr. Dreyfus—the steamer of Tuesday last bore away from among us B. Dreyfus, Esq., of the firm of Langenberger & Co. He goes to San Francisco, probably to remain for some months, attending to the business of the firm in that direction. It is needless to say that his genial presence is missed by all our people, and the necessity which obliges him to go is equally regretted. While it is unnecessary, yet we cannot refrain from expressing the universal sentiment that Mr. Dreyfus is one of the best of men—none more honorable—few so unselfish. May his pathway be thornless, his skies pleasant, and his heart happy, in the tedious city of San Francisco, until he returns again to the bosom of his friends.
Artesian Well—The artesian well now being sunk on the premises of John Hanna, Esq., had reached a depth of 138 feet on Wednesday evening last. The machine was at that point beneath the surface, working in gravel and cement. The prospect of water is considered fair.
Masonic Lodge—The charter for Anaheim Lodge, No. 207, Free and Accepted Masons, has been received. Following are the officers elect of the lodge, who will be duly installed on Thursday, November 17: T. Casad, W.; W. M. McFadden, S. W.; G. W. Vance, J. W.; Th. Reiser, treasurer; wines have been made in Anaheim this season; and of a better quality than that of any season heretofore. This amount is 250,000 gallons in excess of the yield of any previous year. The grapes are all gathered and the wine making is finished for the season.
Preparations are being made for the immediate setting out of from 300 to 400 additional acres of vines. So, in a couple of years' time, we may reasonably expect Anaheim to produce from one million to one million and a half of gallons of wine per season.
We have been shown samples of the white malaga grape raisins of unusual size and flavor. Between 300 and 400 boxes of these, made this year as an experiment are certainly superior to any in the market.
There is now considerable excitement in the wine market of the world, with an upward tendency to prices. This is caused principally by the war in Europe which has interfered with the ordinary yield. Also on account of the wines of America and particularly of California, becoming more generally and favorably known than heretofore. These circumstances are peculiarly beneficial to the Anaheim wine producers, who will now realize the reward of their years' of privation and toil.
Not Intercepted—A dispatch in the Star (Los Angeles) of yesterday reads as follows: "The failure of the steamer Senator from San Diego to intercept the Colorado on her down trip and arrest Col. Van Tassel, who obtained the $10,000 from the Bank of California on a bogus government check, creates much disappointment here."
The Santa Cruz Sentinel says: Where the coyotes howled undisturbed ten years ago, today is published the Anaheim Gazette, a neat 20 column journal. Success attend it.
From City Council proceedings, November 9, 1870.—A petition from the Anaheim Railroad Company, an organization duly established under the laws of the state, was read. It represented that the company was an incorporation organized for the purpose of constructing a railroad from the city to Anaheim Landing, a distance of 12 miles, and for the purpose of completing the enterprise, asked the right of way through the city of Anaheim. The line to commence at a point at the northeast corner of the city limits, thence along Santa Ana street in a southwesterly direction 180 chains to a

Anaheim Railroad Company, an organization duly established under the laws of the state, was read. It represented that the company was an incorporation organized for the purpose of constructing a railroad from the city to Anaheim Landing, a distance of 12 miles, and for the purpose of completing the enterprise, asked the right of way through the city of Anaheim. The line to commence at a point at the northeast corner of the city limits, thence along Santa Ana street in a southwesterly direction 180 chains to a point at the intersection of Santa Ana and Walnut streets; thence south along Walnut street 55 chains to a point at the southern boundary of the city; thence west along said boundary 20 chains to the southwest corner of the city limits, and that the said railroad company have full power and right of way to lay track for railroad purposes over a strip of land 20 feet in width.
The mayor exhibited a lengthy and elegantly prepared map, showing the survey to the Landing, also a profile, showing the grade, the highest being but 17 feet to the mile. From this profile it was observed that Anaheim was 148 feet higher than Anaheim Landing. The average grade for a railroad track would thus be about 11 feet to the mile.
The council then adjourned until 10 o'clock A.M. Thursday, when they again met, and passed an ordinance granting the right of way, as prayed for in the petition.
